Uyuni Salt Flats Bolivia - Three Day Tour | Atacama Desert | Red Planet Expeditions
Welcome to our channel! Our names are Ged and Kelsie and we are two Aussies sharing our adventures through South America.
This is one hell of a ride! We had been super excited to go on this tour since we started our trip and are even more excited to share it with you now! Just in case you missed the title we went and explored the epic salt flats and surrounding landscapes of Uyuni.
To get there we caught an overnight bus from La Paz (see our last ep here: th-cam.com/video/4OMHRCBVstE/w-d-xo.html) which was tough but couldn’t dampen our hype to start this tour. Even the weather seemed to be eager to get us on our way with beautiful sunshine and a crisp breeze (also see: bloody freezing hell wind). Loaded up into Landcruisers, our road trip had us reminiscing of family holidays back home, but it soon became apparent we were not in Queensland (Kansas) anymore.
Our first stop was a train graveyard which we immediately decided to climb all over and have too much fun almost breaking our necks. With this leg stretching out of the way it was back on road and straight to the main event. The Salar de Uyuni, aka the epic (we say this a lot) Salt Flats! This barren landscape of crunchy salt and even more crunchy salt combined with the sunny blue skies was epic (told you). It was like standing on another planet that is also a solarium (sunscreen is a must). The only detractions were the constant and unrelenting wind, plus whatever sickness Kels had picked up (poor gal). We spent the rest of the day taking funny photos, visiting an island that had some plants older than time and watching the sky change patterns with the approaching dusk.
Day two and our first stop was a bit of weird one. It was a small town that was pretty much a ghost town but had some interesting old bits of equipment that used to be used to service steam trains. Some more driving got us to a valley of llamas which were reluctant to make friends with us - no matter how much we tried to get close to them. Turns out our stealth skills need work, as we found out at the next stop called ‘Stinky Lagoon’, a aptly name place home to flamingos. We tried get a closer to the pink beauties using a new tactic, a kind of hunched shamble, but to no great success besides laughing at ourselves.
Driving through the ever-changing landscapes gave us a break from the wind and kept us captivated between our last few stops. Some wind craved rocks (more climbing), Red Lagoon, home to an accurate few THOUSAND flamingos and a very active pocket of geysers (geezers) filled out a busy day two. That night we got to soak off the day’s exploring in a natural hot spring under the stars. Few too many wines were had.
The last day of this epic (again) adventure was a little marred by a knee injury sustained on the walk back from the hot spring and, you guess it, wind (like so bloody much wind). We did manage a short exploration of Green Lagoon which turned out to be as close as we will get to Chile (visa fail), but the rest of the day was spent rolling over dunes on our way back to town. Another overnight bus got us back to La Paz for blessed hot showers and much needed shave.
Where we go next is a little bit of mystery as we didn’t manage to sort out our visas for Chile. One thing is for sure though it will be less windy than this part of our unforgettable journey.

A long, but comfortable, bus ride took us to our first stop in the town of Puno, located on the shore of Lake Titicaca. Hi, would you please give us some advice for the transfer form Puno to Copacabana? Timing to cross the border between Peru and Bolivia,(it is real that you must cross before 5pm?) travel agency for this transport and for the other from copacabana to La Paz. Eventually, advices about visiting Isla del Sol (ferryboat, what is worth visiting) thank you a lot.

    • @Thattrainhassailed
      @Thattrainhassailed 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there! We used PeruHop/BoliviaHop to cross the border, and they organised it all. It was quite a simple process once we were there to get the exit stamp and then the entry stamp. We met a lot of people who struggled to find much information on the process, and for that reason used BoliviaHop for the section from Puno- Copacabana, and then on to La Paz. It was very straight forward and all organised online, and anything further via email or the online portal. The ferryboat to Isla del Sol was also organised by PeruHop, but there were companies at the water which were offering a similar trip for approx 10USD if I recall correctly. Isla del Sol was beautiful, its a good relaxing spot. You can spend a night on the Island if you have time. Copacabana is quite basic, so it would depend on how much time you have. If you travel with Bolivia Hop, the bus schedule will allow leaving Puno, arriving in Copacabana, time for a trip to Isla del Sol and then transport to La Paz all in one day.

    • @Thattrainhassailed
      @Thattrainhassailed 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there! We did like Red Planet. Good quality cars, food and the accomodation standard was much higher than expected. The price does seem to reflect that though. We prebooked online, but there were people travelling with us who turned up in the morning and got a good price for a same day departure, or contacted them through whatsapp and booked. There are over 100 tour operators in Uyuni doing salt flat tours, but we found Red Plant was one of the only ones who did an English speaking departure everyday.

      We enjoyed this trip so much and once in Iquitos the tour was hassle free. Flights out from Lima where easy also. This is an adventure that you will both remember forever. If you can handle rustic accommodation, heat, bugs and rain you are gonna love this trip. Originally we were going to go to Leticia in Colombia but missed out on flights. So it was just luck we went on this tour. The vaccine process at home (Aussie) was pretty straight forward. You do need to get the timing right for boosters and different vaccines so make sure you have enough time before you go. We also took Malaria medication which you might want to look into. We hope this helps. Please let us know how your adventure goes. .

      The heat was insane but you make a great point about the lines. Sometimes it felt like we were the only ones out there.

    You made the right choice to visit the North Rim, if you only have time for one rim, this is the one to go to. It's 1,000 feet (304 m) higher than the South Rim, so the trees are much bigger and nicer. ... and it's cooler.

      We were very surprised by the forest leading into the North Rim. Such a contrast when you get to the lookouts.

    Bryce is such a beautiful place. You did one of the best loop trails in the park. Looks like a "heck of a place to loose a cow".

    I visited Kolab canyon at about the same time as you were there (June 2023) and the road was closed. I've been to Zion every year for the past 20 years (Zion in 13 hour drive from my house in California) because I love this are so much. You made a good decition to get out and walk to the more specatular part of Kolab Canyon. Way to go!

    Hello from California. Just found you channel. We plan on visiting Peru in May. I was lookng for "new" Peru content and found you. Since your channel is fairly new, I decided to watch all your content from the beginning. Suggestion: To make it easier for people like me to watch all your stuff, can you add a "Watch from the Begininng" playlist? It'll be easier to do that now than to wait until you're a Kara and Nate sized channel with gazillions of videos. 🙂

      Hi there, thanks for the tip! I will be sure to do that. You will love Peru. We spent almost 4 weeks there - there is so much to do. Our next Peru videos are to come in the next couple of weeks.

    Not sure if it is your camera, but that Valley normally looks with a very lush green. It is the first video where the green is not that exuberant. Was it really that dry?

    • @Thattrainhassailed
      @Thattrainhassailed 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there - It had been pretty dry! The locals were saying it had been a long time between rains. It started raining the day we left though, so it should be back to it's green glory!

      Hey there! We got them from a cafe called Brunch Cafe. It was so good, we got another pack for our long bus trip to Bogota. I've linked the cafe in the description ☺️

      @@Thattrainhassailed I hope you didn't take the bus from Armenia to Bogota. If you did, bless you because it is a miserable journey. Far better to fly one way for 120 mil pesos. Enjoy the rest of your journey.
