If only Namco would re-release Ridge racer on current gen systems and why their at it throw in Rage and Rave Racer as a all in one Namco Race Arcade Greats package...
Ridge Racer 2 on PSP has most stuff up to Ridge Racer V, including Rave Racer, and emulates really well on PPSSPP. Would be nice to have an up to date version though, with the original music rather than remixes.
The last game in this series that had that bright, sunny, vibrant, colorful arcade-style visuals we loved so much about the 90s. Ridge Racer, Daytona, Scud Race... they all had that "Outrun"-feeling to it: It was not only about the race, but it was more like a holiday, a trip, a cruise outside: You enjoyed the settings, the beaches, the skyscrapers, the mountains, the lakes, the sunset, the music, the incredible sense of speed. All while you were in a sports car that made you feel like the boss on the street. Pure pleasure. I don't think games were ever able to recreate that feeling... so many games looking dark, depressing, realistic, grey... even in this series, starting with Rave Racer and Rage Racer. I really miss it!

I loved Ridge Racer as a kid. Simple to learn, but hard to master. The games were also pretty full of secrets, most notably the secret cars and modes. The joy of beating the harder challenges for the first time.. good times. And oh boy, I remember struggling a lot to beat the loading screen minigame, but the rewards were worth it in the end. You got access to the 8 other cars, which all had their unique stats and quirks. The best of the bunch of the starter cars was the #6 car, which had a good balance between speed and handling, and one of the best cars to beat the Devil Car with. Speaking of the Devil car. There were three special cars that you could unlock by doing the time trial modes. #13 - The black Devil car - It was just as good as the counterpart from the first game. Ridiculously overpowered, but worth getting it - Obtained at the beginner track. #13 Kid - Devil Kid - A smaller devil car. While not as good handling as the regular devil car, it was faster and less grippier, which allowed it to drift the tracks with ease. - Obtained at the intermediate track. #0 - White Angel - Faster than the Devil, but slightly less grippier. Easily the most overpowered car in the game, and incidentally it was the cover car for the game. - Obtained at the expert track.
Fun fact, some people may have noticed. Most of the cars in Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer Revolution are named after other classic games by Namco. On a side note, the music track that plays on the second race in this video is one of my favorites. I used to listen to it while driving at night.

That's just be beginning. You play the tracks in reverse, then there's various challenges with a single fast opponent. In some ways though, the shortness of the earlier Ridge Racer games is part of what makes them so easy to return to. It's not slog through a long campaign.
