John, I think you missed the point of the Lexus R450h. The hybrid drivetrain is designed mainly to improve performance, not to reduce fuel consumption. It’s much quicker from a standing start.

Hybrids are about reducing fuel consumption. Sure they can make amazing power if designed that way.

People need to wake up before posting rubbish about fuel economy. Hybrids fall into two categories...plug in and charge for greater range and fuel economy or self generation for performance and enhanced econony. The rx is the latter type, weighs in at 2.3 tonnes. It's tall and wide and uses a 3.5 litre petrol engine for primary power. Name me one vehicle with those specs that will better 30mpg? No? Because likely it doesn't exist. True average mpg is about 32 based on imperial gallons. I'd argue that was mighty impressive all things considered. Want a fuel efficient car then buy a disposable ford with one of those dreadful 1.2 litre toy engines reputedly costing £100 per lump to manufacture.
The rx uses one of the most reliable and finest v6 engines ever created. It's the swiss watch of engines...beautifully made. Combined with hybrid drive it delivers punch performance and, yes, remarkable economy all things considered. The motor will likely outlast the owners too. It delivers all this whilst wafting 5 people about in luxury. Thats what the rx is all about. Detractors have never driven or owned one.

Just a point of interest. I have been a Toyota/Lexus snob for many years starting in 1994. Started with a 1994 Camry XLE V6 which lasted over 300k miles, next was a 2001 Lexus RX 300 which gave us excellent service for 15 years and 268k miles. Purchase a 2008 Lexus RX 350 and it was totaled in 2017. It’s safety features saved our lives!! After the insurance payed us we purchased a 2017 RX 350 (wife’s car) which we will keep as long as possible. I recently purchased a 2019 RAV 4 Limited trim and it’s better then the 2016 Honda CRV. I couldn’t warm up to the CVT transmission, long engine warm-up and crappy paint (not sure but the paint was not many microns thick) and any small scratches and stone chips went through to the bare metal. I am located in the north eastern part of the US (New Hampshire) Enjoy your reviews and comments. Keep it going!!

I lived in the UK and used to drive BMWs and then bought a Mercedes 500SEC in 1994. I was very diappointed with it, especially the automatic gearbox and lack of feel through the steering wheel. I am no longer interested in cars and only think of them as a method of getting from A to B. I now live in Thailand and drive a diesel Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4 Diesel that does everything I need and you can open the bonnet and recognise all the parts of the vehicle that are accessible like the old days. I cannot see why anyone would buy a hybbrid car that is going to be a nigtmare for maintenance and repairs in the future as too complicated.

    • @johntheaccountant5594
      @johntheaccountant5594 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I would probably only buy a Toyota, Honda, possibly Mazda and only a NON hybrid car in Thailand. Cars not assembled/manufactured in Thailand are subject to a minimum of 110% import tax so the Lexus is not a viable proposition. If I was living in the UK would opt for a second hand NON hybrid Lexus or Toyota.

John, thank you for your clear and insightful comments on the 2020/21 Lexus 350.
I have been enjoying your colourful reviews for several years now.
During 2020/21 I have been researching several vehicles to replace my beloved 2000 (petrol),Toyota Prado being sure that the 2020/21 Prado would be a natural fit for me, (as I have owned it for 20 years now), but it was not meant to be.
Five years ago I purchased for my wife, an excellent new Audi A4 Quattro TFSI and have seriously enjoyed that car on several very long journeys through Victoria, SA & NSW and was expecting to purchase a Q5 or a Q7 2021 model.
Both models proved to be a bitter disappointment, ( I wonder what were the design team at Audi thinking), the number one (of 4 issues), were
1: the touch pads - both panels are angled upwards and reflect the sunlight making the reading of the apps very difficult plus the finger prints,
2: the searching of the apps were a major distraction.
3: the equally ridiculous piano black - highly reflective dashboard,
    4: No spare tyre?
If that wasn’t enough, I also tested the Porsche Macan and Cayenne and found them seriously short on value for the money.
My wife and I really do enjoy long drives, it would not bother us to travel 2 hours to see and interesting exhibition or go to a really good winery for lunch, so when I tested the Lexus 350 I was pleased beyond compare and I am ready to buy the 2021 “crafted” model from my local Brighton Lexus dealer around April 10.
I especially like the vented and heated front seats, all wheel drive, centre diff lock, spare wheel, HUD, two places to store I phones, Etc, etc. And yes it so happens to be $50,000 - $80,000 cheaper than the Germans.
We are retired studio photographers but maintain a keen interest in landscape and fine art imagery, the Lexus fits the equipment and our baggage neatly.
The only down side is the over sized doors, bit of an accessibility issue in the shopping centre car parks.
Sound quality is not really an issue as I find driving through the high country with the music on a considerable distraction, except on the main highways.
Compared to KIA, the build quality of the Lexus feels stronger and as the vehicle is built in the same Japanese factory as my series 200 Prado - I am confident of another great purchase.
My wife’s Audi is now five years old and now that our children have left us alone her car is now too big, so we are now looking for a all wheel drive replacement with Lexus.
    What would you suggest?
I look forward to more of your excellent reviews on Hybrids, Petrol/Diesel/electric/hydrogen /magnetic engines, Luxury tax on essential safety equipment, recovery gear, finance, depreciation, tyres - especially Cooper ATF’s, and the poor state of our major and minor country roads.
    Best regards..

Hey John I have had a positive experience with owning a VW Scirocco R since 2014. We have had two problems with it during this time, both inside the warranty period. The first problem was with the motor in the drivers side mirror. No big deal they replaced it with no fuss. The 2nd problem was with the fuel gauge sensor in the fuel tank, bit of a hassle as it too them 2 goes to fix it. But since those two issues have been fixed its been great car. Versatile and lots of fun in the twistys on the weekends. I would have purchased another one but they have discontinued them until the proposed electric Scirocco in 2022. I am happy to keep the current Scirocco until something similar tickles my fancy.

John - a completely unrelated question relating to your recent towing video.
I triple tow (tow two trailers at once) with my 2012 F150. F150 towing a medium sized camper with a small utility trailer connected to it with canoe, kayaks, bikes etc...
Yes, if you can believe it this is legal in Ontario with a standard G-class license.
I was wondering if you could help me understand the weight distribution with regard to the 3rd trailer.
F150: rated for 7350LBS GVWR and 15,100 LBS GCVR with 1700 LBS payload.
Camper: 4300 dry weight and 5500 GVWR with about 750 LBS hitch weight.
Utility trailer: GCWR of 2000lbs with about 300 LBS hitch weight. I will never put that much in it - more like 400lbs total with about 60LBS of hitch weight.
So, my question is how does the utility trailer affect the math? Is it added to the GVWR of the camper? Or just to the GCWR of the F150. The total theoretical MAX weight would be 14,850lbs, which is still safe for the F150.
..again, I will never put more than 450 lbs on the 2nd trailer.
Any help would be appreciated because there is quite literally no information online about triple towing.

You think the infotainment unit is bad in the new ones, I just bought a used 2011 IS250 that doesn't have a screen at all and just has a radio and cd player that looks straight out of 2008 and earlier. I'm getting it converted into a android auto model via a tablet install but still, it's insane that it was even the case back in 2011 for the price. Still, it feels amazing to drive, almost like I'm in a limo, and somehow only has 44000 on the odometer so I figure I'll get 15 years out of it before anything catastrophic happens...

So spend another 30% over the top of the Klugger to get a car that has little to no difference mechanically/dynamically nor in terms of engineering quality.
But you do get front end styling specifically designed to show society that you are beyond petty concerns such as taste.
Ffs, just buy the Klugger and put the savings into that vasectomy and swingers club membership you've been thinking about along with the occasional visit to the GP for your regular broad spectrum antibiotic shot.

John, what can I say,,, you were right in relation to our purchase of our 2017 XC90, excellent car all round, great sales team, BUT, the after sales service and lack of knowledge or just pure negligence from the service department is criminal! I could go on and on with the pure crap that we have been put through in relation to our Volvo Dealer but I won't bore you or the other readers. With just 60,000km on the clock we are cutting our losses and trading it in for the RX350. Would have loved to have gone for something like the Kruger or CX9 but the $ didn't add up. So with all the reviews that I have read hopefully our future experience with Lexus will be a trouble free one.

Had the rx450h for 2 yrs now. My biggest gripe is not the infotainment system which is a doddle to use...honestly. Why do we need or want a mac or android system in a car? Keep it simple.
No...its the comparitive lack of load space compared with say an X5. Hybrid buys better city mpg but it wont run on EV up hills or if you have the right foot of a lead booted urangotang. Hybrid adds 400kg so why drag all that about? Well here in blighty you get about 32mpg...and closer to 45mpg in town...not great but not bad.
However...stomp on the gas and shove in sport mode is instant. 2.3 tonnes to 60mph in under 7 seconds...averaged over 5 runs more like 6.8 seconds backed up by independant tests. Ignore the spec sheets...they understate the true performance..they actually publish truly pessamistic performance figures not born out by testing against gps...maybe to put off the hoy-palloy from buying? Who knows but it is a quick motor.
Cruising is quiet and refined and reliability is legendary...best cars made. Want excitement? Buy a sports car. Want a do it all reliable refined and rapid motor that carries 5 in luxury? Buy an rx450h f sport.

John I have had 11 Lexus's (Lexi?) and there is a common weak point that is notable especially on current RX. The radar cruise control can not properly control your speed on inclines or declines or in slow moving traffic and is generally inferior by a factor of 99 against the systems in audi/merc/bmw. My 2018 Prado suffers badly from this also, My CLS Mercedes by comparison is phenomenal in that area. When it comes to all the other Lexus virtues, they are available in spades with the RX!

Personally I have no interest in "sporty" cars because if you drive them like they're meant to be driven you're on a fast track to having to walk for a few years. It's, in my opinion, just as much fun using your mad skilz to punt a shitty slow car along a mountain road as fast as it will go -- which in some cases might even be below the posted speed limit. Similarly, where's the fun in overtaking on a short straight on a two lane road when you start off siting on their bumper and have got 300+ HP on tap? Give me 100 HP, sit back 100m, spot the gap in the opposing traffic thirty seconds before it gets to you, put your foot to the floor, and arrive on the tail of the prey doing barely 20 km/h faster than it at the exact moment that the gap in the opposing traffic falls into place for you to change lanes into. SO much more satisfying when you get it right. And that is why I drive an Outback.

    Hey john
Im a diesel mechanic apprentice, whilst at training one of the trainers got onto the topic of the dpf hiluxs.
Apparently he heard the dpf hiluxs are supposed to be running a different oil with a lower sulfer content than their usual oil. And toyota dealerships were just putting the old style oil in.
I see the advantages of running after treatment systems with the trucks at work. Meeting euro emmisions in the after treatment means you can actually run the engine slightly more 'dirty' for more power and still meet emmissions.

For anyone wondering about this question, just look at Mercedes cars that were built in the US, absolute crapola, our 2000 ML 320 was a disaster. Now maybe Toyota/Lexus cares more about their reputation and won't settle for garbage products coming out of the US, but the tri-swastika brand was happy to dish it up...in spades.

@@gazzafloss Last time I was in Germany a local friend and I visited a car show where there were a few US made Mercs (Germans can't find the oldies at home, so import from the US). Not sure if the 1960s Mercs sold in the US were made in Stuttgart or the US, but one couple I spoke to said they had to fix a few things on a US spec Mercedes that ordinarily should've lasted longer. Can't recall what parts needed replacing.
The US made Highlander and Acadia are sold here in Australia, as are Dodge Rams, Corvettes and Mustangs. No reliability or build issues with the Toyota, but heard the others are lemons.

Kluger is synonymous with no brain choices and " I want a Cruiser but not enough $$". Every time I see one I feel the vacuum as it passes. I could not even fake excitement if I won one. Pretty much the same with the Lexus. Do nothing for me.
Your comment about testing it in context is spot on. So many tests do more to communicate their sufferance of being demoted from testing another Ferrari instead of the intended usage. Things like cars that not needing to see a dealer every second week, its comfort and feel at ordinary speeds and dealer support are more important to me than how fast it could lap the 'Ring. I enjoy my bread and butter car for what it is. One day maybe a GT3 and then that stuff will have a higher priority.
