      @@ukchub6633 Please don’t comment negatively before you know the actual history. The Tadau Kaamatan festival first started at the Sabah/North Borneo state level in 1956, even before Sabah was a part of Malaysia (Sabah joined to form Malaysia later in 1963). The 1st state level Sabah/North Borneo Unduk Ngadau was held in 1960. So no, this Tadau Kaamatan or Pesta Kaamatan isn’t just made up for tourism, but a yearly celebration for all the indigenous tribes of Sabah (mainly KDMR) to come together & be thankful for a good harvest. Eventually in years to come, this celebration welcomed anyone from anywhere around the world to come and be part of the thanksgiving. Even if there were no tourists at all, the Pesta Kaamatan will continue as usual because it’s original & main purpose is for us, the people of Sabah to never forget our roots, traditions, traditional clothes, food & our languages, no matter how modern the world gets.

      @@ukchub6633 I’m surprised that you as a half Iban seem not to know about the Sarawakian culture & traditions, which is still very well preserved right until this day & that Hari Gawai & Pesta Kaamatan celebrations are definitely NOT “just made up” for tourism.

    Steve, more info about the pageant in Sarawak.
    Keling (for men) & Kumang (for women) Gawai is initially an Iban event but it has now include other Dayak ethnics as well. At state level, it is divided into three categories - Iban, Bidayuh and Orang Ulu.

      Oh thanks for the info!
      Now that we know more about the Sabahan ethnic groups, we need to learn about the Sarawakian ethnics. Like is Iban a Dayak tribe? Or a completely different tribe? Is Iban the largest ethnic group in Sarawak? We can’t wait to learn more !

      @@JetLagWarriors Dayak tribe is the selective umbrella term for native of Sarawak, also used in Indonesia but referring to whole native tribes of Kalimantan (Borneo). Iban, aka Dayak Laut (Sea Dayak), is the largest tribe, 45% of Sarawak demographic. Bidayuh, aka Dayak Darat (Land Dayak), is the second largest native tribe, 9.4%. And now we come to Orang Ulu (Upriver People) with 8.9%, which also an umbrella term for 27 smaller tribe, from which they share the same mandolin-like cultural instrument called Sape (Sa-Peh).
      They are also exist others like Sarawak Malay (15% of Sarawak), Melanau (6%, mostly resided in Mukah), Kedayan, Tagal, Punan Bah and Salako-Lara. Also existed is Javanese and Bugis community which originated from Indonesia, and Suluk people which may originated from Sabah or Philippines.
      Not forgotten is our oriental friend of Chinese (14%) which mainly consist of Hakka, Foochow, Hokkien, Fujian, Teochew and others (sorry, I forgot the names), the Indians (about 4,500 people), and the Eurasians which migrated here in recent years.

      @@JetLagWarriors, the term “Dayak” has been adopted as the name of the indigenous of Borneo. Sarawak has about 27 Dayak ethnics while Sabah has about 35. The racial component of Sabah & Sarawak are generally Dayak, Chinese & Malay as compared to Malay, Chinese and Indians in West M’sia. If Indians are small in number in Sabah, they’re far lesser in Sarawak. That is why Sarawak gov. decided not to give Deepavali a public holiday (but Good Friday is a public holiday in both since 2/3 of Christians in M’sia resides there).
      The Indonesian side - Kalimantan - has roughly a couple of hundreds of Dayak ethnics. You both should do Kalimantan one day. 😀

    • @gerardfernon3339

      It may be coincidence, but traditionally in England there have been "May Fairs" to mark the late Spring and the early Summer. There was also the crowning of the May Queen, a young woman, who led the procession to commence the fun and games, such as the Maypole dancing, juggling, acrobatics and suchlike. In fact Mayfair in London was the place where London's May Fair took place. I think many of the better people looked down on it because of its rowdiness and closed it down. And then built expensive houses there, which are still there.
      Coincidental that Kaamatan is also in May? Europe's harvest festivals are in September/October ... after summer.

    • @bungaialoevera
      @bungaialoevera 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@gerardfernon3339, the Sabah’s Unduk Ngadau is more than just a beauty pageant. There is a pagan story behind it. In recent years it has been promoted to keep our cultural heritage alive. It’s already sad that our languages are endangered… which is why the Harvest festival is an important platform for that purpose especially when many would come home for family gatherings. The pageant is focused on cultural and lingual literacy.

    • @SU-II
      @SU-II 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@gerardfernon3339 Kaamatan is based on the paddy planting season in Sabah.. The people plant the paddy a few months before and harvest around April or mid-April because this is the hottest season. Harvesting by hand will take 1 to 2 weeks and everyone will take part somehow. By the end of it, it will be then celebrated as Kaaamatan. The celebration is multi level... at the small village level or a few villages join together to celebrate. Then there's also the district level and now we have the state level.
