      I currently have two finecast models, this rune priest and Nijial Stormcaller. This model was a gift from a viewer, so I'm going to paint him up and more than likely never touch another finecast model again. Are you an AOS player? I have many Maggotkin models myself.

    Great vid! Didn't know about the mold release. I just got some Drukhari Grotesques, and one of them has a warped ankle and stands at like a 45° angle on the base. Any tips for getting it straightened out?

    • @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush
      @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, when ever I have warping I dip the part into very hot water and try to message them out. Do not leave the part in the hot water for very long, 5-10 seconds at first to get the feel, 15-20 seconds tops.

    Uuuugggghhh finecast lol! Great walk through dude!
    Question: do you find getting back into painting tutorials (since your fancy pc has been up and running) has increased your painting productivity, decreased painting productivity, or it has stayed the same? I wondered if it motivates and makes you paint more, or if you paint less dude to time spent in production.

    • @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush
      @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is an awesome question, and like many things the answer varies. I could paint a lot more, and I do mean A LOT more if I didn't have 20 hours or more a week in production. At the same time, if I do not feel motivated to paint and want to binge watch Cobra Kai on TH-cam TV (great show) I usually don't because I know that I would be letting down my fan base, and I'm not in to habit of disappointing people in general. I guess, the best scenario would be, I paint and I have a film and post production intern. Maybe one day lol! I truly appreciate this question, people underestimate how much effort goes into producing a tutorial. My production time is extended because I'm learning Photo Shop, and Audition, and After Effects and Premiere Pro and and and.... I make a lot of mistakes, that takes time to correct. Over all though, the product I feel is worth the effort even if I get 80-100 views, it's the fact that I made something special and I get to share that with everyone.

    The best way to clean up a finecast model is to not buy one.

  • @powerwolf-vw8st
    @powerwolf-vw8st 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    My way of dealing with finecast is very effective for me, I dont buy finecast :P Or well i try to avoid it as much as possible. Im pretty tolerant of mold faults but finecast to me is usually much more hassle than even early 90s lead minis. i will deal with minor mould slips and re profiling an area or two but i draw the line at having to rescult entire faces and stuff like that.

    • @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush
      @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I couldn't avoid this one, I would like to honor the person that gave this one to me, moving forward however, I don't see myself buying another one. Wow! I remember the Ral-Partha minis of the 90's! Yeah I felt I was sculpting when I was clean this guy up! I'm going to have to reward myself after painting this guy up.

      @@TheMiniaturesPaintbrush I would like to think it's mostly contained to the older metal minis which have been re cast in finecast ( it does seem to be the case from what i can tell) It's also usually not quite as bad as people make out, If you have a decent amount of experience slight slippages aren't too much of an issue but yeah it is quite demoralising having to go through all that toil simply cleaning up defects rather than simply mold lines, Il clean mold lines all day off a metal mini those are fine but theres just somthing about paying extra for resin and then getting that which leaves a sour taste in my mouth,Resin of course always has more problems but usually not THAT many. Seems like today that particular medium has been handed over to forge world for producing minis for lotr necromunda and the like, Not had any of them myself but id bet my bottom dollar the average quality is higher.

    Just put my first finecast model together, I had heard about the bubbles and soft material but the sheer amount of cleanup was so overwhelming I thought maybe I got a dud or something. I thought there was no way GW could have sold something of this low quality. Cleaning one model took over 45 minutes, I can't even imagine having to paint an entire finecast army. Thank god they've moved away from this garbage.

    • @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush
      @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      AMEN! Not only did finecast models sink in quality GW actually RAISED the prices of these models that were obviously cheaper to make. WARNING Forgeworld Resin cast is not too far behind in quality. Better, but not by much.

    I am painting a finecast model for a commission. There are so many holes and some details are straight up missing. Looks like Farsight was blasted by some sort of acid shooting gun. I'll definitely never paint a finecast for myself ever.

    • @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush
      @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was a way to create minis as quickly as possible as cheaply as possible, it is dubbed fail,cast in the community with good reason. Even though, it was an extremely cheap or process to create miniatures. The savings never got passed along to the consumer. You and me both brother I will never paint a fight cast model for myself ever. This model that you see here it was actually a gift.

    • @gaolbreak1090
      @gaolbreak1090 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheMiniaturesPaintbrush I could see the value in finecasts if they were actually cheaper but, like you said, the savings never got passed to the consumer. Commander Farsight was still 45€, which is just way too overpriced for the quality. And it's extra sad because the model could look so cool! I love the design and the pose. If it weren't for the poor quality, it'd easily be one of my favourite minis I have ever painted!
      Maybe, some day in the future, GW will remake the finecast models in plastic.

    It kinda sucks my warlord is a finecast resin model. 30 dollars Canadian for the model I needed and you have to clean up the model more in detail in comparison to plastic troops for my army that are perfectly done.
    Also is it recommended to just cut off the little lip at the bottom you normally slide into a base and just put the model on a normal base?

    • @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush
      @TheMiniaturesPaintbrush  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That does suck, I did pick up a 3D printer so that I’ll proxy any Warlord that is not attending official tournaments. But I’m glad that GW is not using finecast anymore for any new models.
      As far as the slotted bases, I personally am not a fan and snip them off, but it’s truly a matter of preference.

      He does seem the scapegoat to all the ailments that GW has suffered, he made many many many mistakes. He received death threats. He exalted Ultramarines above all else and felt like all factions should be like his favored. The thing about finecast that really bugs me is that it was a cheaper way to produce miniatures yet they charge more expensive prices. Speaking of more expensive prices have you noticed the price creep?
