I'm the owner of the 1960 Impala in the vid. Although I've chimed in on a few comments, I'll clarify a few things. I fully believe this was a 348/tri-power car. It has all of the 348-specific items (3/8" fuel line, routing of fuel line under control arm, thinner fan shroud, 348 "crossed flag" badges (front was replaced at some point - they even installed it upside down), dual exhaust, rubber bumper instead of 3rd bolt in the voltage regulator, and 3:08 Posi rear. I believe it is a tri-power based on the threaded holes in the distributor recess area of the firewall. Tri-power cars couldn't mount the coil on the engine so they were located on the firewall. Per research and observation, these were dimpled on non-tripower cars and only threaded on tri-power cars.
The previous owner bought from the original owner and the original owner stated it had been a 348/tri-power car but he was never able to confirm.
Original trans is a 3-speed. That will change. I have a great running 348 (fire up vid after getting it home here: th-cam.com/video/kMsG7Df-hvY/w-d-xo.html ), a date code correct tri-power intake and correct carbs, and a correct cast bellhousing Borg Warner T10. I've also sourced an original floor shift steering column.
Original color is Roman Red with white spears as several have called out. The extra tail lights (and the trunk, door, and rocker trim as well as the "visors" over the headlights" were added - probably the same time as the velour seat covers were installed. It'll be returned to original when restored.
My apologies for it sitting outside - I normally keep the trunk gutters clean. It (along with several other cars Bob took video of at my house) would already be undercover if Covid hadn't happened. Furlough ate up some of my "big garage" fund but I did get the land cleared!!
Overall, the car is amazingly rust free other than an old side swiped or backing mistake and the rear quarter, the rear portion of the trunk pan, and the drivers side rear foot well.
It will once again shine like a new copper penny. As Bob has mentioned, I'm finishing up a 440/4 speed Challenger now. The last car I restored got a Goodguys pick and national magazine photo. I restored a very similar 1960 Pontiac Catalina several years back that was 10X worse than this..this will be like a buff and wax job comparatively!!!
Thanks for all the nice comments.
For those asking - It COULD be for sale. But I'll throw it out there that it would not be cheap. Roman red, 348, tri-power, 4 speed, posi...it's one I couldn't easily replace and I like my projects more than I like money.
And yes...those are reflectors in the arm rest. Bob took video of 9 vehicles at my house that day and while he's a right smart guy, he can't possibly be an expert at, or remember, the details of all these cars.
Let's keep this going - If you have something cool let Bob know! We need to keep the hobby alive while we wait out this Covid thing.

That’s why I started this channel to let you all see these cars & hopefully inspire you to get started on your project what ever it is.

One other telltale that I completely forgot about. Only the high HP big block cars had a ballast resistor. These were solid lifter engines and would have been the 315 hp (tri power with 11:1 compression), the 320 hp (4 bbl with 11.25:1 compression) and the 335 hp (tri power with 11.25:1 compression).

    • @seananderson5597

Non-high performance cars used a resistance wire instead

Was this Chevy's version of the Ford Starliner? I love the profile of the roof, sort of a fastback. My dad had a 1960 Ford Fairlane, not to be confused with the later 60's Fairlanes. In 1960 it was a low-end full size Ford. This one was a six, not a v8. I have to say I prefer this 1960 Chevy to a 1960 Ford Starliner. The Chevy just has nicer styling compared to the Ford. However the 1961 Ford Starliner was much better looking than the 1960 and compared more closely with a 61 Chevy.

My grand mother had a 1960, coupe 348 tri power in frost blue. It had the same tail light setup. Hers had the three speed turbo-hydromatic with power windows & seats. Also factory installed seat belts front and back, auto diming head light control, pwr brakes, steering, factory AC, front disc brakes, duel exhaust and topped off with a 4-barrel carb. That car was a screamer and she knew how to drive it. Any time my brother and I were with her she made us wear the seat belts. In 1964 she custom, line ordered a new Impala with everything listed here even the same color except she ordered the 409 and treaded in the '60.

Thanks Oliver. There's a great story to buying this one that started with going to look at a '51 Ford, making a package deal (couldn't load the '60 fast enough), trading the '51 for a Whizzer motorcycle and '46 Ford, selling the Whizzer, parting the '46....
I've picked up a great running 348, correct floor shift column, date correct tripower and correct T10 4 speed...now to just get a couple others out of the way and get it in the garage.

I just love those 59 and 60 Chevy's with the 348 engines. Mine was a used 1959 Impala Sport Coup, back in 1964, with the 348, 250 horse and Turbo Glide. Long story short. I found a genuine broken, 348, 350 horse in a 61 Chevy along with a blown 4 speed. Bought the engine, bell housing along with, clutch pedal and linkage, 3.70 posi. rear gear set. Had the 59's 348 bored .030, fitted with Jahans 11.25 to 1, power slot pistons, along with forged rods. Balanced to 6,000 rpm's, rebuilt the heads with new 2.07 intake and 1.72 exhaust valves, along with new dual valve springs, and fitted 61 exhaust manifolds, I think they were the late 2.5" outlet as for the 409 as well. rebuilt Rochester carbs with new progressive linkage, new springs and weights for the dual point distributor, no vacuum advance here. 350 horse solid lifter cam and lifter's with new 409 oil pump. Rebuilt Muncie M 20 4 speed with a bench seat shifter, all put back into the 59 Chevy. Loud lumpy exhaust, with the distinct whine from the Muncie 4 speed, gave the 59 away as, not stock in the least bit. Beat many early and mid 60's muscle cars on the street with that 348. GTO's and chevelle's, one a 396, with this screaming 348 engine. All are long gone now except for a few pictures and fading memories.

@@bobsclassiccarsparts8772 Thank You Bob for your comment. That was a true story indeed. I had a reel to reel tape recorder at the time, 1964. I had it setting on my folks front porch, recorded a burnout from the street in front of their house, power shifting into second gear, still, the tires kept squealing. Dad told me to never, ever, do that again in their neighborhood. I remember running, Mickey Thompson special tires of, 8.50 X 14 from Sears and Roebucks, on the rear to help with traction. I just loved that 59 Impala, Grecian Gray, with red and gray interior, just beautiful. Oh! What an awesome sleeper it was in that day. She will forever ever be great, that 348.

Nice 60. Probably not a 348 tri-power. It looks like the car has been altered years ago concerning the taillights. Should only be taillight, reverse lamp, taillight per side. A good way to check is to jack up the rearend tp see if it has limited slip, or is in fact a posi tract rear axle. If it was a 348 tri-power, it should have a posi. The ends of the armrests on the door panels are reflectors, not lights. Another dead giveaway that it's not a 348 tri-power is the trim. I don't think the tri-power cars came with the rocker trim and door/trunk edging. The trim could have been added some time in the car's life though.

The car is mine. I've dug up all I could find to verify the 348/tripower. It is a posi, has all the 348 only items, and the tripower tell tale signs. I bought it from the 2nd owner - first owner had told him it was originally a 348/tripower but 2nd owner was never sure. Rocker molding and edge trim was added...just like the headlight shades and taillights...poor mans custom years ago.

I wished I'de never of sold mine. I had it 11 and a half years. I was 15 then, then sold it years later. At high speed it would hunker down. Almost to the rear bumper it seemed like.. At low speed it would raise the tail section upwards. Tail fins are kind of tricky if one don't know this about both the 59 and 60 Chevys. And don't even drive over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge with one on a windy day and a rig passes you.. if so ya might wanna re-invest in toilet paper and underwear and a prayer..Yea you're Killing me with me looking at this one. Mayne someday I'll have another. Even if it dont run, I'll remenes in it over my morning coffee as I sit in it and play that Hi-Fi super deluxe AM radio in it with the rear back seat speaker. But I bet something that you may not know. You can still use a crank in the harmonic balancer to start that engine with. They had that up until 1972. Right now I have a 1968 Ford Galaxie XL 500 Fastback with the hide away head lights. Its got the 390 in it with the factory 3 speed column shift. A/C unit. Tinted green glass, Im Johnny Cashing together, one piece at at time other then it won't have 2 tail lights on one side and one on the other. Same for the headlights.. Right now I need just one of the long looking finger looking things that run down the front part of the fender. 5 to a side.. I'm in need of one,, even if the pins are broke. If you read this message and happen to find one. Please let me know. I need it. Let me know how much it is. Also had you ever noticed that some of those older cars and trucks never had a locking key hole on the drivers side door. and only on the passenger side? Well I'll tell ya. Ya see along time ago when men was gentleman and women was ladies. Parallel parking was in. And the guy would unlock the door to let the lady in, and if of course she thought any thing of him she would reach over and unlock the door from with inside her side and let him in. True story. Also on those inline 6 and 283 power glide automatic transmissions. You can kick start those babies at around 20 to 30 miles and hour by pulling them or by coasting them down hill. Ya see back in the 50s all that rocket technology was comming into play. Even TV shows was about rocket movies and cartoons, everyone was getting into all that at that time. So the auto industry too, they got in on it and made from 57 to 1960 with rocket fins. Rocket fins to the rescue I guess. Not very practical if you're car had flat fins. They don't handle air traffic to well on the 59 and 60 Chevys in or under those fins. They'll get ya high. Really..., in the tail section. I'de give a hundred totally restored 59 Chevy Impala's for just one half butted broken down 60 Chevy, I even met my wife with it. Shhh' hush at times I still wished I still had that car. But like alot of people that's divorced. My wife and I have still been together since 1978. God I miss that car thou. No I wouldn't trade my wife for another 60, she's my very best friend. I'de just like to have another 60 Chevy. I never did like those long looking ding dong tail lights in a 59. It to me looks like a gremlin creasture. The chrome tail trim being it brows, and the long red taillights that look like 2 long eyes along with the chrome bumper looking like a chrome mouth.. I did later bought me a 1964 or 65 Chevy Chevelle 2 door stationwagon. To many years ago to remember the exact year of it. Anyway it was either a 64 or 65. It was an inline 6 with an automatic trans. Why that thing wouldnt pull a bag of grociries down hill if the wind blew behind it. It was slow, the compression wasn't that good in it. At times I thought I'de get pulled over for highway mopery in it. Then the 59 Elcomino came around to me at that time,, it was black with a white roof.. and it had that ole houndstooth itchy type cloth with vinyl interior seats in it. I gave it away.. It ran so very quietly, easy to drive and handle. I drove it from back home in Maryland where I lived at that time to Jacksonville Fla. I was 19 then. And this old man,, a really nice guy Jarold was his name, he was also a WW11 vet ,I met him while I was there in Fla. He must of been in his 50s then. Well ya know what? He wanted that car really bad. He told me about alot of how those older vehicles was back in the day he would say. Also being it was with in about 4 days of his birthday, and I'de already been at my cousins home visiting for 2 weeks into my stay. I'de gotten to meet his wife Gayle,, nice lady too by the way. So he and I got to be pretty good friends. So before I left to go back home to MD, I gave that 59 Elcomino to him as an early birthday present. He wanted that car so bad, I couldn't say no.. he and his wife live on a fixed income anyways, and too his wife was in the hospital with a heart issue, so as I said he wanted that thing and I up and gave it to him.. I'de came back home on a bus the next day later.. longgggg butt trip ride too, never again would I ever ride another bus.. But then my cousin had called me about a week later and had told me that the old man died about three days later after Id'e left Fla. His wife had a stroke and he couldn't take seeing this happen to her, and later that evening he laid his head near her in her hospital bed beside her and had passed on.. yea of all things a heart attack, go figure. That really tore me up to of heared of that. I'm 58 now, but Jarold and Gayle, they'll never be forgotten. I'de shortend alot of this story. I'm really sorry I didn't mean to go this far into detail. But anyway I'll subcribe to you're channel. Thank you for showing that 1960 Chevy.
