On "My Car Story" we're in the Suburbs of Minneapolis MN on 6-1-22.
We're looking at a 1960 Chevrolet Impala Convertible in Tuxedo Black Paint. The car comes with the factory 348 CI V8 engine, and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Randy Guyer. Randy’s had this car since 2007. He shares he remembers seeing this car as a kid with the jet on the side and though, one day I’ll have one of those. Well he was right!
    ENJOY!

I forgot to comment about the ignition switch. Some of you older folks will remember that if the ignition wasn't in the "lock" position you didn't need a key to start the car. If you look closely at the camera shot that Lou took of the ignition key slot you will see that it has 2 lobes on it that a person can simply grab and turn to start the car. Thievery wasn't as prevalent back in the day.

This is a beautiful car, wearing it's Tuxedo Black paint job, and houndstooth upholstery for the interior. The 59 is my all time favorite, but the 60 comes in a close second. The 409 engine was released mid year in 1961 as an alternative to the 348. This 1960 Impala is definitely a head turner, that's for sure! Another great classic. Good job Lou!

I live on the other side of the pond and my first sight of a 1959-60 Impala was way back in the day when I watched highway patrol with Broderick Crawford on TV. It was what you call the sedan version dressed in police livry. Those rear fins and the shape of the rear end and as a 14 yr old schoolboy I thought it was the most beautiful car I'd ever seen.

Car is a masterpiece. I remember reading many many years ago in maybe hot rod magazine that those fins were not ideal for racing as the created turbulence or something to that affect. What a gem, thanks for letting us all see this beauty

What a beautiful car. This is when Bill Mitchell took the reigns of GM design from Harley Earl. And the optional 348 is just the icing on the cake...... before the Camaro and the Chevelle and the muscle car era, this was THE beast to own the road.

The last car my father brought before he died was a new '60 Biscayne, 2 door, plain Jane. Only extra was a heater. Loved that car, I thought it was one of the prettiest Chevy's made. Loved driving it. When I was 16 I slid on ice and crashed into a telephone pole and bent the left bumper. Cost a whole $25 for a new bumper section, including labour. That thing was built like a tank.

We had a 1959 2-door Impala hardtop. It was my favorite car as a kid . I went to the dealership and picked it out with my dad. Something about that 1959 long sweeping rear wing that made me feel like I was flying down the road. I can remember when we first got it. It was a head turner. People were always asking how does it feel to drive how does it feel to ride in that car... Yeah that car was sweet. Then they came out with the 1960.
I called it the broken wing... We didn't get another new car until 1964 my dad bought a four-door Bel Air. Needless to say I was very disappointed to me it just looked like a box with a white top..lol

    What a beautiful automobile!
Speaking of "Body by Fisher", I worked for a short time installing electronic equipment on yachts for Bobby Fisher at Rybovich and Sons. Didn't know who he was. On my first day, I'm carrying a bunch of tools out to a boat (70+ foot) to install something, and a guy in old shorts and deck shoes asks if he can help me carry my gear. I say sure. He talked to me for a half hour or so as I did the installation. On my way back, someone asked me what I thought of Bobby...I said, seems like a nice enough guy. Still, no idea who he was...haha. Clueless. Quickly transitioned to Solitron Devices for a better job in electronics.

Nobody ever mentions but on these ignition switches you could take the key out at the off position and start the car without a key repeatedly until you put the key back in and turned it to lock. The switch had a projection on it for turning. It didn’t require turning the key itself. Very convenient since we never needed a lock. We had a 1959 Bel Air.

Very rare, back then. 283 with a Power Glide 2 speed. Doggy, but it probably weighed as much as my house! 5 tail/brake lights on each side, with 1959 backup lights below the rear bumper. So cool! Randy's '60 Impala here (I pronounce "Impolla") is magnificent. When he refers to the 'ginger bread', it's very tasteful and actually adds to the beauty. The bumper guards very subtle, rocker panel. NO continental kit/fender skirts/weird mirrors seen on too many '57 Chevy convertibles. Although the '60 is still a lot like the '59, the back end has styling ties also to the '58. The '60 kind of combined both. In fact if the downward part of the 'seagull' fin was continued (downward) and around the innermost taillight on top of the bumper it would look all the more so. I'm a pretty good sketch artist and actually did that a few years ago, and it looked pretty darn good to me, but more importantly to my classic car pals. Even so, I like it the way it is best. I thought the '61 did a clever job of 'finishing out' the look started with the '58 with that ridge branching out from the center, then wrapping around the sides.

I _KNEW_ I saw a later 1960 counterpart to the '59 you recently featured somewhere! This kind of _"closed"_ the emphasis on wings and fins as far as Chevrolet was concerned... The other GM divisions (especially Cadillac) hadn't totally finished with them, and really wouldn't be until after '64...
As for the '60, I liked how they went back to the round taillights (as in the '58)... The front dash had changed little, but the front end was much more simplified... I also liked the unique "rocket or jet" chrome ornament on the side (Bel-Airs and Biscaynes had shorter ones), and the carryover of the dual antennae on the rear end from the '58 and '59... They were works of art!

My next door neighbor at the time in 1969, had a red '59 with a 409, pretty sure it said so on the block, turned 16 that year, took driver's Ed & training in the Spring of 1970, went to Hamilton High in LA, they had a great program for learning how to drive, 20 weeks total, way too unaffordable now, just with insurance costs I imagine, our family also had a 1960 Impala, White and black with a red interior, when we briefly lived in Granada hills. My actual first car ( in 1971) was a Studebaker Lark 8, 1960, an absolute tank of a car, it had well over 400,000 miles on it, given to me by a teacher friend of my Dad, it just died on me on Sepulveda Blvd, going through the tunnel pass. Even got rear ended, the car that hit me was a small cheap looking Porsche, just a scratch of paint on my rear bumper, no dents, his front end was almost totaled( about 1972) think he gave me about$50 or so for "repair" that was ok, neither one of us had any insurance, you didn't have to have proof of it then anyway, such a simple and more fun era, life goes on, thanks for your videos, they just don't make em like the used to!

Amazing! Wow! I love black cars (own one) and this is a stunner! It takes the basics of the wild 1959 and tones it down to a bit more normal and I love it. I was hoping that would have a red interior, but the black shows off all the chrome very well. Thanks for sharing this with us, Lou! You've been on quite the roll lately!

Another beautiful car Lou. The 348 and the 348 tri power were still available in 1961 but not if the new 409 affected their sales or not. I just know 1961 was the last year of the 348. Beautiful car and this gentleman knew exactly what he wanted.

Lou - brings back a lot of good memories! I also owned a black 1960 impala, 2DSD back in the mid 1970’s early 1980’s.
Car had a 327 with custom red interior and chrome rims.
Unfortunately the car fell victim to body rot and the floor boards were completely gone. The front bench seat had nothing to bolt to and became a rocking chair. Had to let her go - safety reasons.
Thanks for bringing this 1960?impala to the channel.

Hey Lou me again! I remember that Joie Chitwood had the Chevrolet contract for his thrill show! My dad worked for him as an anouncer during the show, I remember when Joie Chitwood had his winter quarters to practice stunt's and try out new ones, I was a kid back then and his winter quarters was in Patterson (I think) NJ at a old race track because my mom took us to see the sights! The Chitwoods also are responsible for many move stunt's with car's!
It really is a shame that there are no thrill shows anymore!

Thank you for showing this iconic car which is now extremely rare in car shows! The 1960 Impala was not the biggest car on the road that year; we used to have one from a crash predominantly shown at an auto body repair place where I lived in the 1990s. That Impala looked relatively small compared to the many cars of its generation. I imagine that its lack of weight made the car very quick with a 348 V8 installed!

In 1961 chevrolet only made 142 409s one 4 barrel solid lifters 11:25to1 compression 360 horsepower. The 60 Impala featured had automatic trans with 348 with 3 2 barrel carbs 280 hp it was the largest 348 you could get with auto trans. The largest in 1960 was 335 horsepower but only available with 3 or 4 speed manual trans.
