I love the transition into melting and mud. I was almost convinced that if you touched it that you'd get mud and slush on your hands.

Awesome job on your diorama and great video for doing snow effects. I agree with you that a lot of people in this hobby fail to capitalize on techniques and products originally designed for other hobbies. I'm primarily an historical gamer but i get great ideas and tips on painting, terrain building, scratch building from the scifi/fantasy, model railroad and scratch building communities. For example, someone might not be able to afford plastic sheets simulating corrugated metal but some craft shops sell letter sized corrugated sheets of paper that are cheap. You can also take a cardboard box and carefully strip off the outer layer to reveal the corrugated paper underneath. Simply put, explore other hobbies for tips and use your imagination.

Great tutorial mate. Didn't realise it was actually so simple. I've got a Lawrence and Mathews in town. I'll have to pop in there when i decide to do something with snow on it :)

That looks great! The most realistic melting snow I've ever seen. I have a few followup questions: 1. What did you use for the icicles? 2. What did you use for the melted water? Any chance of doing a video about making the pooled melt water effects?

So sorry Mike, I only just saw this question. The melted water is Pebeo Crystal Clear Resin the icicles are either made from heated and pulled GW flying stands or are from the old Fenris basing kit.

Hi there, great video mate. I want to have a go at doing a base for a 1/6 scale figure ive got and didnt know where to start with the snow. Will pick up some of this snow from my local hobbycraft. I just wanted to ask, what is a good material for me to use as a base for a snowy look and you mention that you can spray/brush the base with pva glue then sprinkle the woodlands snow over it, but could i do that AND then once its dry add more snow in this mething that you are showing in this video to give it a piled deep snow look ontop. How long does it usually take to dry too? thanks alot

Dave Young hi Dave, thanks for the comment. This method can be applied to literally any surface. It takes around 24-30 hrs to dry solid, but it’s workable after 12. Hope that helps mate.

Thank you for sharing your expertise. I can really use this. I noticed some of the piles have a slightly frosty translucent edge to them giving them that slightly melting slushy look. I assume to get the edges like this, you spread/pulled these areas/edges of the snow mixture thinner thus when the PVA within the mixture dried, the edges turned out like this? Thanks for any insight.

Jerrico71 how did your project go?! I hope it worked well for you?

@@BullysPaintingParlour my project is working out well, thank you very much for asking. When I was looking at your project, I was wondering how I may be able to utilize either your melting snow pile effect all together or just its frosty translucent edges. After more thought, I ended up needing more of a wet slush look which I did acquire via baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and thin CA (cyanoacrylate) glue a.k.a. Super Glue but thinned-out by the manufacturer. The thin CA glue rapidly soaks into all of the baking soda before it hardens and acts a sufficient protective barrier to shield the baking soda from interacting with air contaminants that would otherwise turn it yellow over time (i.e. the biggest problem with baking soda's use as a snow effect). The end effect of baking soda coupled with thin CA glue is an excellent very wet snow slush look that lasts and it comes with a bonus i.e. it is extremely tough and can withstand being played-with; which are my current challenges with this project since it is being made to withstand common & general playing (not rough-housing) by kids. Thanks again for asking and for the muse! All the best!

After you apply it like that , did you ever try a light dusting to add fine texture or does it all just congeal into a blob anyway ?
