- A few weeks ago, The Ramparts gathered together once again in Stag’s Head, Dublin, this time to sing one of our favourite Christmas songs, ‘Fairytale Of New York’.
Following the recent sad news of Shane MacGowan’s passing, it brings a new poignant meaning to this song for us. Join us in raising a glass to both Shane and Kirsty.
The Ramparts will be performing this song live along with many other Christmas Classics on Thursday 21st December in Rathmines Church Dublin. This gig is now sold out.
Musical Arrangement by Eoin Conway.
Video by Fearless Media.
Colour grading by Josh Balfe.

I came here after watching ‘My name is gabriel’ a korean variety show. You guys rock! Hi Rory aka Park bogum!
I’m a Korean living in Canada. I discovered you through a TV program, and I have been deeply inspired by you. I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude.
Living in a foreign country away from family and friends has often left me feeling lonely and uneasy about people. Recently, your warm spirit and beautiful music have brought me much-needed comfort and healing.
Reflecting on your kindness and talent has helped me rethink my own life and find renewed hope. You have reminded me of the beauty of human connection, allowing me to feel the love I had forgotten and to appreciate the simple joys of life, like today’s sunshine.
Thank you for your kindness and warmth. I hope you all continue to have good health, happiness, and joy. Sending cheer and love from toronto❤️

@@DavidtheWriter Because this original song Irish composer Shane Macgowan passed away recently. His life was bumpy road sometimes but he made great music. He has pure soul. This cover is a pray and praise for him, I feel.

Chills. This was awesome
Love love love this!
I never got myself into a classic Sing Song when I was in Dublin last year
Maybe next time!
bravo lads!
Lovely!
My name is Gabriel brought me here 🤗
Meravigliosi ❣️
Love Love Love it. ❤
❤
The new punk in the pub ... and Shane smiles.
As nice as it is, it would have been better had they gotten some ladies to sing as well. The co-dependency relationship between the two is what sold me on the song.
Love it❤
Dodged that slur like champs!
Where is Jepy?? ❤😂
genius (but at the cost of the manuscript to make it "acceptable")
You're not allowed be in this band if you don't drink Guinness
There is one drinking Heineken you still have a chance lol 😆
brividi......
Who are the ramparts?
Who aren't the Ramparts?
@@seanvanhaaster5629 good answer.
Still figuring that one out
lindo...
Couldn't help thinking they sounded like monty python doing the Kirsty McColl parts.

The George on a Sunday😊
Jacob Collier needs to see this…
What a great version of this song, what a pitty the felt it nessary to change the words.
genius (but egalitarianism over artistic vision)
I really wanted to like it but changing the words and too polished for my liking. Good job all the same 👍
Bang on. The original lyrics gave it its raw, unvarnished reality of how people talk to each other in that world. It sets up for contrast and dichotomy - one accentuates the other i.e "you handsome, you're pretty"
Was wondering how they were gonna dance around "that one line" :P
Lost you when you changed the words. Changing the words shows a complete misunderstanding of the meaning of the song and a disservice to the late great writer.
Agreed totally they shouldn't have bothered, at least in the church they stuck to the lyrics
Whatever they chose to do, there were going to be people in the comments defending the right to say "f**got" either way
They literally replaced one word. How does removing one slur lead to "completely misunderstanding the meaning of the song"?
Surely it's more insulting of you Sophia to disregard every other lyric just because one was removed? I've never listened to Fairytale of New York and thought "wow the use of the f word really ties it all together" 😂
@@TwoTime2222-td6yc
The word was used by the character because it fitted with the way she would speak and with her character. She is not supposed to be a nice person, or even a wholesome person. She is a woman of a certain generation at a certain time in history and she is down on her luck and desperate. Her dialogue is as accurate as I could make it but she is not intended to offend! She is just supposed to be an authentic character and not all characters in songs and stories are angels or even decent and respectable, sometimes characters in songs and stories have to be evil or nasty to tell the story effectively. If people don't understand that I was trying to accurately portray the character as authentically as possible, then I am absolutely fine with them bleeping the word, but I don't want to get into an argument. Shane MacGowan
@@FlowersInHisHair the word F**T in the context of the song is not what other groups use the word for, the word and in the context that SMG penned this was meant to mean "stupid/silly" person and not one of a sexual connotation as most people from the LGBQT community think... Words can and do have multiple meanings it's that that makes context and nature pivotal in how and why they are used... I'm sure the N word is universally condemned yet it in context acceptable in lyrics, should we demand that this word be totally removed from all songs too as it is offensive???
Lacks guts.
Spot on if they don't use the original words as intended why bother
@@CatherineCoughlan-c1othey sang 99% of the original lyrics and changed one line. Get a grip man it’s not that deep, if they said the word they’d get stick as well so there’s no winning. I’m sure your day must be ruined because they chose not to say a word. 😂
@@madzadz0247 grow up , explain to everyone why they didn't sing the one word, man up you and explain????
@@CatherineCoughlan-c1o Because regardless of the original intent of the lyrics, some people find the word very hurtful/abusive. The context of when the song was written might mean the word had a different meaning then but language evolves and people adapt as they wish.
The beauty of free will, expression and speech is that you can change things in art and music to your own liking. The Pogues had plenty of covers and reinterpretations of songs and I doubt you have a problem with those?
"Manning up" would be not getting so offended and upset because they didn't say one word. If it really triggers and upsets you so much, just listen to the original and enjoy it! You have the free will to do so!
@@TwoTime2222-td6yc you mention free speech there how ironic , it's not my fault or Shane's fault if people get hurt by the use of a word they choose to interpret incorrectly
Sad that you changed the lyrics, in the words of the man himself context and literature and the use of language all filters in to this people should see past their interpretation of the word used and seek clarity as to what context and reason for the words used... So as everyone has their POV in this and to be fair all just and relevant it's very important to read up on what the man said on this matter...
“The word was used by the character because it fitted with the way she would speak and with her character,” he said. “She is not supposed to be a nice person, or even a wholesome person. She is a woman of a certain generation at a certain time in history and she is down on her luck and desperate.”
He said the dialogue was “as accurate as I could make it but she is not intended to offend! She is just supposed to be an authentic character and not all characters in songs and stories are angels or even decent and respectable, sometimes characters in songs and stories have to be evil or nasty in order to tell the story effectively.”
The singer added that he did not want to get into an argument about the song and said he would have no problem with that word being bleeped out.
Now these are the words of Shane McGowan and one thing that all artists alike to them changing the lyrics of their work is an insult if you don't like the word bleep it out but don't insert other words because that is not what the artist wanted...
Kirsty MacColl used the lyrics "You're cheap and you're haggard" in plenty of later performances so is that justified or does that also make her an insult to Shane's writing?
@@TwoTime2222-td6yc oh did Kirsty co-write FTONY? Must have missed that... So tell me what is your stand on the "N" word being used does that not offend just as many as the word "F" or is it ok to accept that as a cultural expressive word..... HMMM
@@joelyons886I feel like there is a coherent point buried somewhere in here
@@joelyons886 that's exactly what I'm asking. She didn't write it but she's an artist who changed the work. You said "that all artists alike to them changing the words of their work is an insult" so I'm asking is Kirsty MacColl changing the words also an insult?
The n word being used in a song by a black person is completely fine, never said I have a problem with that. And I even think the use of the f word in this song is also fine in the original. I just don't see how it's a big deal to change it and I don't think it completely insulting to the meaning of the song like you implied in your original comment.
@@TwoTime2222-td6yc pretty sure that was to get past the censors. there's no censors on YOU TUBE
Look after your teeth young men, and go easy on the drink..
"You're cheap and you're haggard".......ask me bollix.
Stop being politically correct....do the song right or DON'T do it at all!!!!
Failed , at least sing it with the original words or just don't bother.
LOL. You hear these wonderful voices singing this beautiful arrangement and you're so hung up on one slur that you say they "failed"? Give your head a shake
Hate to break it to you but that’s exactly how it was sung at his funeral yesterday.
@@carolelk carol I suggest you clean your ears and listen to the church version again
@@FlowersInHisHair the only slur here is your ignorance on the meaning of the word faggot in the context of this song.
I hear you. Although, little known fact, apparently Kirsty sang at many live gigs .... You're cheap and you're haggard.
Personally I don't think it really makes a huge difference. I think the song itself, melody, chords, structure is what makes the song amazing rather than particular words at particular times.
