    Love how everyone is like "Screw this truck, buy American".
    This truck is 100% made and assembled in the US, unlike all the other "American" brands.

      I saw another review that said that 75% of the parts of this are made in the US. More than any other truck out there. So this is the most American of any if the big three

    I absolutely love my 14 sr5 trd 5.7 tundra! It always makes me giggle when I pass people driving f150, ram1500, or Silverado, and they all rubberneck. Makes me think they are second guessing their 40k purchase.

    Ecoboost doesn't have the displacement a V8 has when towing. You need more displacement for engine braking.

  • @Thamac15
    @Thamac15 10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    My question is why do the Ram and Ford ½ ton trucks have such poor resale value? The trucks I plugged in were 2011 models with 36k miles, f150 and ram crewmax/super crew laramie and lariats 4wd with more options and compared it to a tundra dbl cab limited with less options and all were trade in value with good condition. the ram was $24k, the f150 was $23k, and the tundra was $31k. I challenge you to do the same and see the values yourself. Why is the #1 selling truck worth so little?

    • @gmrtg1414
      @gmrtg1414 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The biggest problem is they sell so many new trucks they flood the market with used ones which drives down the resale value. They aslo seem to offer bigger discounts on new trucks so the resale number isn't always as low as it seems.

    • @Thamac15
      @Thamac15 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      This doesn't apply to an FX4 f150. Those are only discounted if it's a leftover vehicle, and i've never seen one with more than $3k discount. So a $42k fx4, the one i looked at after the discount, is still in the low 20s as far as resale value after 3 years. Which is horrible. If they discount the trucks soooo much then how do they make any profit? That tells me the trucks are actually overpriced like no other if they can afford to discount an XLT $7500 and make a profit.

    • @gmrtg1414
      @gmrtg1414 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thamac15 The more used ones on the lot the cheaper they usually are. Wait till the new 2015 comes out the resale value will drop again. The Tundra has the best resale in the 1/2 trucks but try to find a nice used one and then try to find a nice low mileage F150 they are everywhere. I only get a new truck when I lease it and only buy it if its a year old with low miles let someone else take the hit.

    • @Thamac15
      @Thamac15 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I lease as well, most of the time. I only buy if I want to build a drag car or a beefy off roader to enjoy for many many years. So if someone who buys a lot of cars and gets rid of them often (should be leasing but whatever) they shouldn't be buying a brand new ford or ram then unless they want to be upside down(granting they didn't put a lot down), do you agree?

    • @gmrtg1414
      @gmrtg1414 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thamac15 I would agree on that for sure. Just for shits and giggles I went to auto trader and did a 100 mile search from my zip. 2008-2014 F150 4x4 any style there are 785 for sale. Same search for the Tundra 101. I'm not making any excuses for the poor resale for the Ford but I'm telling ya there are way too many used ones for sale. I have a little over a year to go on my lease and the truck is barley worth what the buy out is now LOL that is bad.

    An excellent and very detailed review. Great point on lack of integrated brake controller at least on the 5.7L model, it should be standard as Ford and GMs are now and Ford's for some time now. Interior and some of the exterior heavily reminds me of the F-150. Still worth a serious consideration as a 1/2 ton tow vehicle.

  • @cheby56

    I traded my 06 Silverado Z71 w/ 86k miles for a 2014Tundra Platinum CrewMax Black XP edition. Every option available to include a 3/1 Leveling kit on 20 in rims and 33 inch Nitto TG's. All dealer installed and under warranty. I couldn't be happier with this truck. It looks good, runs good, feels good and sounds good and the chicks dig it! So what if I only get 13 mpg.. if you cant afford gas then walk!

    12 mpg? They just lost out to the big three. Ram is introducing a 3.6 liter diesel with the 8 speed in the 1500. Ford has the ecoboost. Strange that Toyota, known for fuel economy has taken such a different philosophy.

    Man, I love the Tundra! Too bad I'm too poor to buy this one, but I can certainly admire it. I prefer Toyota over any other manufacturer out there. I have a 2001 Tacoma and in it's 14 years it has never had a problem (I touch wood, haha). I had a 1996 Camry before that and it's simply amazing how reliable these cars are.

    The difference is whether you get the upgraded captain's chairs, rather than the front bench with folding middle seat. Bench seating gets you a column shifter; captain's chairs get you a center console shifter.

    My one thing to this is if you drive it well, my father has the platinum edition and he gets roughly 15 or 16 mpg driving through city and and backroads to work everyday. Though he is right the other newer trucks are getting 18ish highway maybe better.

I still love it & its the only vehicle i've ever owned that i'm 100% satisfied with & wanted to keep forever,.I like the old style better though,..new ones are ugly to me,.but inside nice.

    My 2006 Tundra Double Cab SR-5 was hands down the best vehicle I ever owned. I'm driving a 2010 Tacoma Double Cab Prerunner now and wish I had the Tundra back.
    I know that all manufacturers need to continuously improve their products to compete, but for the average guy, when is enough enough ? Engineers are hard pressed for new ideas and reinventing the wheel is a tough job.
    I think Toyota "came of age" in light-duty truck building in 2004, as they did in passenger sedans in 2002.

    Image be damned. I've always liked the Toyota Tundra. I remember when it was first introduced in 2000. I remember thinking "finally! Toyota has produced a larger truck to offer people something larger than the Tacoma. At last, the Tacoma has a big brother to play with." Now what Toyota needs to offer the Tundra in order for it to compete against the Big Three is a turbo diesel engine.

  • @Pitsoup

    I have to chuckle at the Big 3 owners. I was one. Chev since...always I guess...been driving since 73. This year I bought the Tundra SR5 TRD Ribbon Blue. 5.7litre. I test drove all 4, Chev, Ford, Dodge. Toyota. In that order. Took all 4 on the same test drive on the same day. I knew in 5 min of driving the Tundra I was buying it. Just so you know 75% of the truck is purchased from North America. It design is American. The Big 3 can't say the same. Had mine since May, put on 5000 km. For someone with chronic back pain. That's a lot of driving. Going out tomorrow and put on another 500 km. I won't worry about my back pain either. I like how the ride stiffens up when your offroad but it's like butter on the highway. I get lots of looks and comments. Later man.

    @AlphaBiker54 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great review. My Tundra is older than you. Only kidding it's a '08 Double Cab. I was considering a 2014. I was hoping that Toyota did something about the poor gas mileage. I know a lot of Tundra owners say they do not like the new design but I do. I really love the new interior. I hope they got rid of those ugly orange dash lights. I think I may just check into a 4 Runner and see what their gas mileage is like. I just want something to get me on the beach fishing and I like Toyota quality.

  • @Steu022
    @Steu022 11 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    There's a coupke of issues Toyota needs to address especially if they want to continue to be a strong contender in this market. 1) the fuel mileage sucks!! 2) they need to step up their horsepower rating 3) they need to bring a diesel into the mix amd finally 4) they need to consider a heavy duty version of the Tundra . . .

  • @TheGtracer1994
    @TheGtracer1994 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    True, but my dad has a 2012 F-150 5.0L now and gets at least 19 mpg with 360 hp and 380 lbs/ft. He does have a 3.73 rear end though compared to the 4.30 in the Tundra. Perhaps a good move for Toyota would be to offer a lower number rear end for the 5.7L.

    The fuel economy he was talking about was the 5.7 V8, while he was towing a pretty heavy trailer. Plus the Tundra still has really good ground clearance compared to the new Rams, Silverados, and Sierras. The new american trucks get better fuel economy because the lower their trucks which is the easy way out. Toyota has had good fuel economy for the longest time. Now what engine does your ram have and is it towing anything?

    Glad I got a 2013 in February. I'm not a huge fan of the 2014 Tundra. Controls look better, but overall, the 2013 Tundra is just better in my opinion. I do wish they had added direct injection for improved economy and power. My 2013 CrewMax with the 4.6L V8 gets about 19-20 on the interstate and around 15-16 in town. That's good enough for me, but if they could bump that up to 16/22 that would be even better. Steering was already light in the Tundra's. I wouldn't want it to be lighter!

    Yeah, maybe he does get 19 mpg... On the highway.. When they say "observed" mpg, it's usually mostly city driving, some towing, with a trip or two on the highway. So, combined ratings are much lower than strictly highway mileage ratings. A V6 F150 probably couldn't even average 19mpg!
    Realistically, V8 F150's average about 15mpg.. But that's still better than this tundra's 13. Perhaps thanks to Fords more extensive experience.

    As a Toyota salesman, let me say this. The exterior looks better in person and the interior is much better than the previous generation. With that said, that is as far as the improvements go. This Tundra costs Toyota 20% less to build meaning the resale value of the Tundra is shot, unlike before. Toyota did this to compete with other brands on pricing, using larger incentives like dealer cash. To accomplish this, Toyota used lower quality materials on the Tundra. I am disappointed with Toyota.

  • @Harleyrk99

    Bottom line, Toyota Tundra will last forever. The one thing that is a nuisance is the center console was made to go past the rear of the seats making it tough for the guy in the back seat sitting in the middle, especially in the double cab, not so much an issue in the crew max.

  • @GitSumGaming
    @GitSumGaming 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I recently purchased a 2014 Toyota Tundra Limited Crewmax. Love it so far about 500 miles on it. I have some questions I was looking for advice on.
    1. This is my first big vehicle so can anyone provide some tips on parking in tight parking spots? I know backing in has better turning radius however I notice when I am pulling into a spot with cars on each side I feel like I am going to hit the other car, at least with 90 degree angle spots. The parking spots that are angled are not too bad. So what tips can you guys give on parking between cars whether it be backing in or pulling in forward. (I have tried wide turns but sometimes it just doesn't cut it in a small parking lot) I read somewhere about pulling up behind the car to the left and then backing up to straighten up and pull in but havent had success doing that yet :|
    2. Is it normal for the Tundra to not shift when accelerating quickly until 5-6 RPM mark? The transmission and shifting is very smooth in normal acceleration and driving. However if I am at a light and decide to "punch" the gas it feels like it takes to long to shift? It runs up to 5-6 before it shifts. From what I saw online it seems like its normal. At least from the videos I have watched. Just want to get more opinions on this. I noticed when I am driving that a small range of the pedal is "soft" and its not until I pass a certain point that the power of the 5.7 V8 really feels like it kicks in
    3. Anyone know what the weight limit for the tailgate and step bars are? I believe Toyota doesnt suggest a weight however I was thinking if you have people sitting on the tailgate to not exceed 600 pounds and the step bars 500? Given the step bars are just to get in the truck not to stand on but just wondering if anyone has tested or knows of what it is capable of
    4. What is your real world MPG? I am getting 13.8 right now (mainly because I am still in the "test" phase, as in punch the gas sometimes)
    5. Can you turn 4HI on after you start the truck or do you have to be moving? And for the month 10-15 miles using 4WD if you go in a straight line no turning can it be done on highway pavement or should it just be exercised off road? Really I think the whole 10-15 a month is just crap but I like to follow the manuals ;)
    Thanks guys!

The transmission shifting around 5-6000 rpm is normal if you are gunning it. The tailgate should be ok for up to 900 lbs unless your owner's manual states otherwise. The step bars are mounted to the frame so unless you have hippos climbing into your truck then you shouldn't have anything to worry about. As for your last question, pay close attention. DO NOT DRIVE YOUR TRUCK IN 4 WHEEL DRIVE ON A HARD, DRY SURFACE. If you do you will damage your drivetrain. The front wheels are designed to be able to slip and they can't do that on dry pavement. You should be able to turn 4 HI on in any gear under a certain speed. It should tell you in your owner's manual. 4 LO, I believe, you have to be in neutral for it to shift. The reason you need to run in 4 HI at least once a month is to let the 4 wheel drive system clean itself out, otherwise you will encounter problems.

    Now all they have to do mostly is work on the fuel economy for the next model and its almost perfect maybe more aerodynamic and off road improvement too!

    Absolutely. That 4runner would never get past the Australian Design Rules (ADR ) due to its ridiculously heavy fuel consumption. Mine is a RHD and in Australia all vehicle`s have to meet a strict criteria with regard to emission control and fuel consumption. I can get close to 28 MPG on the open road at 110 KMH . A heavy right foot will see fuel consumption rise dramatically. Hence cruise control is now almost a foregone conclusion.

    It's a good looking very serviceable truck. I think Ford, Chevy and Dodge should look in their respective rear view mirrors. The Tundra will catch you soon.

    These trucks kick ass. For those of you saying its not a "truck", that goes with almost every truck out there. Real trucks were built in the 70's. New trucks are serving as grocery getters.

    there is a reason why you don't see commercials with guys saying 'I traded my 2014 Chevy Silverado for a Toyota Tundra'...lol. Tundras are the 'affordable' truck for someone that wants to look mean and cool in a truck but cant buy a GMC Sierra or a Dodge Ram. When I see American trucks such as the 2014 Chevy Silverado, I see what a definition of a truck really is. American trucks as clean lines, very bold looks, not too fat, and what a truck is suppose to look at. When I see a Tundra, I see a truck that looks like a piglet. a fat body, round, too much tacked on metal, and trying to fit in a world it doesn't belong in. Just last year Toyota 'made' over 200,000 tundras BUT only 'sold' 20,000 in the entire USA. they are making the tundra as a loss. Adding lines of plastic in front of their trucks with that small nut sack of a logo is a shame to put on a truck or even to buy when even thinking of buying this pos. GUYS buy a real truck..don't put yourself to shame buying this affordable truck.put a little bit more money down and buy a Ford, Dodge, or a GMC..a real man made truck that has the power and strength to do what you want it to do.

      Tundra is the compromise of a truck...never get one..go buy a American brand truck that invented the word 'truck'...GMC Sierra, Ford F Series, Chevy Silverado, or a Dodge RAM...a tundra is a fat pig

    I wouldn't get carried away with that ZF transmission.... ZF doesn't put the same transmissions in every car, they have a sort of "builder's kit" in various forms for different applications. The only thing Bentley's and Dodge's transmissions have in common is that they were designed by the same people at around the same time.

    Amazing how the F-150 still managed to hold on to the ext-cab suicide door cab. A necessity for people who use pickups for their intended purpose. It seems more and more GM, Ram, and Toyota are designing trucks BIASING towards poeurs who just want to drive drive around town looking tough and pretty.

    Toyota knows that its truck isn't the best possible truck on the road. That's why they keep changing things. This time its the body/interior. Next time will probably be more spec related stuff. One reason they wouldn't do both at the same time is so they can find out how each change effects the trucks popularity. I for one would take a truck as reliable as the tundra any day of the week. My 2011 will last more than long enough for toyota to get there trucks in top shape. Then I will decide who makes the best truck for me.

    Sadly as much as I love Toyota trucks, the perfect configuration for me will always be my '08 Silverado ext.-cab suicide door that opens 170 degrees back(minor detail that F150 would've won me and whole bunches of real truck people over). And the Nissan Titan, but I just can't warm up to the pug-nose stubby cab-foward design of front-end(that element only looks good on cars, NOT trucks). Just my two cents.
