I bought a Maverick model 88 just like the one you’re demonstrating in this video after watching your first maverick 88 video a number of years ago. The first one I got had a major feeding issue. Even after trying a bunch of different brands of ammo, it would not feed reliably at all. So I took it back to the store, the guy that sold it to me, tested and verified that it was a lemon. He said he has never seen one of these come back in all the years he’s sold firearms. Anyways he swapped it out for another one and it worked flawless!
The Maverick is the best bang for your buck you’ll ever have in a firearm. I would recommend setting aside an extra $100 to get a 500, but if you’re on a budget, this’ll do just fine for home defense, hunting, you name it.
@@srgranke maverick has a shorter barrel, a worse trigger group, it’s not ambidextrous, it doesn’t have a vent rib, and there’s less options for customization. It’s basically just a slightly worse version of the 500 that sells for much cheaper.

Two guns I wish I never sold: my 10/22 and my Maverick 88. The 88 was a basic, bland but great shotgun. Never jammed, easy to clean, shot well and was built solid, not mention very affordable. EDIT - I know I can buy them again. I also kept my better ones and have bills to pay... I was just saying how good they were.
I think it's hard to beat for the price point. I did some work for an old lady (I'm a handyman) and she wanted to barter me the shotgun. Has served me well and I feel like it's always good to have a few cheaper options around for SHTF scenarios and maybe you need to arm friends and family.
One thing to keep an eye out for, is on these shotguns, there is a pin on the receiver that holds the trigger group and stuff in place, it can work its way out and it's a headache to get back together.
I love my Maverick 88, its great for home defense. Out of all my weapons its one of my favorites. I think I paid about $225 for it. Great video by the way! This guy is a sharp shooter for sure
Been a fan of yours for years. You are one of the few that just keeps bringing good reviews and your delivery is definitely informative. You were definitely a teacher. God bless and may you be blessed to keep making some good content for us. My Mav 88 is a dream. I walked into a pawnshop and they tried to talk me into a Citadel 12ga semi-auto. I took it home for about $225 3 days later. Soon as my background passed....I went in and returned for the 88. Glad I did. Nothing but great reviews and it is reliable. I have the 28in model but she does good for home or hitting turkeys outside. Love it. For the price and what I need it for....can't see spending more money on another shotgun down the road to add.
The gun that got me into guns. Received one as a gift in around 2009. It was already heavily used but I've shot it many times over the years since then and it's always functioned perfectly.
Thanks for sharing the love on the 88. Love mine. Best inexpensive shotgun available. Not a lot of frills, just a solid basic shotgun that will happily eat what you feed it.
I sold many of these when I used to work at a gun store here in Las Vegas many years ago. Works great when you need it! I had praises from people who are business owners and home owners who have used it to scare off criminals from hearing the rack and load in a positive way to include self defense to which it did its job to protect its owners in self defense. Fantastic value for self protection...
Love my 88! Swapped out the stock and forend with the Hogue overmold short LOP stock and upgraded the forend with the nut adapter to run a 500 forend. Added the OPSol adapter to load up 12 short shells of .00. Added the side saddle pic rail and a inexpensive red dot and also added the perforated barrel shield found on the 500’s. Makes for the perfect defensive shotgun at a low price point!
How do you like the OPSol adapter? I have one in my Maverick and she cycles those shorties, both Slug & #4 Buck like a champ. A good investment for Home Defense.
First round through my 88, the front bead flew straight off. Never bothered replacing it or trying to contact them. That was the first gun I ever purchased and to this day I’m beyond in love with it

I've owned my Maverick 88 Security model (20" barrel, 7+1 cap) for several years. It's loaded next to my bed and is my go-to for home defense. Rock solid reliable. I've added a snap on fiber optic sight to replace the brass bead, a hand strap on the foregrip, and I carry extra rounds on the stock. I trust it to protect my family here in Tacoma, WA.
I bought my Maverick-88 with a 24" RIFLED barrel called the Slugster, shortly after getting my Mossberg 500 Combo. I love the Maverick with the 18" barrel from the 500 but will also swap out the 28" Skeet/Trap Ventilated Rib barrel when shooting in the high plains of Colorado. Both of the Mossbergs shoot like a dream and the action are smooth and FAST. Mainly the Maverick is for Home Defense with the 18" barrel and 00-Buck or #4 loaded, The 500 is in the Gun Rack above the Safe with the 24" barrel and SLUGS as a backup. I’ve taken quite a few turkeys with my Mav 88. A little secret: A Mav 88 with basic #4 shot will take a Turkey every bit as well as a Super Nova with super expensive, boutique, “turkey loads” that cost 4x as much as basic shotshells.
@@whiteyfisk9769 my last two turkeys were taken, walking together at 35 yards. 2 3/4” # 4 shot. I’ve used shells from the same case of shells I bought 10 years ago. Hype is hype.
At close range you'll be able to, but not nearly as easily as with a dedicated Turkey load. Hornady 3" magnum BB coyote loads with the versatite wad and 1½oz nickel-plated lead shot is a game changer for Turkey aimed center mass. They're expensive but will extend your range a lot. Check them out.
I picked one of these up about 14 years ago. I replaced the fixed stock with an adjustable with a pistol grip. It’s a great home defense shotgun and I’ve even carried it in my truck when traveling.
I think Hickok45 if anything, has done the masses a great service in bringing the lowly 5 or 7 round pump shotgun back into the spotlight and can really showcase that they have excellent range and versatility, especially with slugs. He has definitely shown that you don't need a 30-60 round semi with a drum mag to protect hearth and home and has hopefully inspired people to become skilled with a scattergun. It's funny how people think a pump gun is a beginners gun.....

I own one, love it. Make sure you get the “security model” it holds 7+1 instead of 5+1
Security model comes in 2 versions... 18.5" barrel with a 5+1 capacity and the 20" barrel with a 7+1...i have both
Love these 88’s have the 18.5 inch barrel with pistol grip and the 20 inch model with the extended mag tube.
I gots bofe em.
Holds 12 mini shells
@@Papieck37 I thought the security was the 20inch model, I'll be damned lol now I know
The Maverick is the best bang for your buck you’ll ever have in a firearm. I would recommend setting aside an extra $100 to get a 500, but if you’re on a budget, this’ll do just fine for home defense, hunting, you name it.
I thought the only difference between the 500 and the Maverick is the safety and furniture.
@@srgranke maverick has a shorter barrel, a worse trigger group, it’s not ambidextrous, it doesn’t have a vent rib, and there’s less options for customization. It’s basically just a slightly worse version of the 500 that sells for much cheaper.
@@heroesinhoodies1210 Barrel, and thus vent rib, is a nonissue since 500 barrels can be used on the 88.
EDIT: Oh and you can buy 88s with a vent rib. Mossberg's branding is "all purpose"
@@randomlyentertaining8287 Absolutely right about the barrels. I swapped out the defense barrel with a mossberg 500 accu choke barrel so I could shoot trap and skeet with it and love it.
I was just saying how good they were.
there both cheap guns that are easy to get go get 2 new ones? it's not like you sold great grandpappys pre 64 model 70.
Two of the best ever
I only sold mine to my little brother after I ran across a good price on a tricked-out M500. I'd still have it if not for that.
You can get both for $500 my dude
@@justinriley8651 can I borrow $500?
I think it's hard to beat for the price point. I did some work for an old lady (I'm a handyman) and she wanted to barter me the shotgun. Has served me well and I feel like it's always good to have a few cheaper options around for SHTF scenarios and maybe you need to arm friends and family.
One thing to keep an eye out for, is on these shotguns, there is a pin on the receiver that holds the trigger group and stuff in place, it can work its way out and it's a headache to get back together.
Definitely.
It's what I grew up with and still have. Great gun.
I have had my 20” barrel M88 for 6 years now and absolutely love it. Hundreds of rounds of birdshot, #00, and slugs with zero problems.
I just bought one of these a couple of weeks ago and I'm very happy with it. Awesome shotgun and very affordable.
Mine should arrive tomorrow 😀 can't wait to take it to the range
First shot gun I’ve bought and it does me justice every time
I love my Maverick 88, its great for home defense. Out of all my weapons its one of my favorites. I think I paid about $225 for it. Great video by the way! This guy is a sharp shooter for sure
😊I love your prescription of the weapon I am getting one soon.
Love my 590s shockwave 18.5 and bought the maverick 88 cruiser for a backup and found I really like the 88!
I have both and love them. With the Opsol adapter the 88 can shoot mini shells too, if you can find them😊
By the way. DAMN GOOD SHOT HITTING THE GONG WITH THE FIRST TWO ROUNDS. Looking at a living legend right now.
I bought one as my first new gun years ago, at Kmart of all places. Best $160 I ever spent.
High value shotgun for the money, durable and reliable.
Thanks for sharing the love on the 88. Love mine. Best inexpensive shotgun available. Not a lot of frills, just a solid basic shotgun that will happily eat what you feed it.
This was the first firearm I ever bought. I love it and trust it. A very good first gun for anyone. Especially here in Canada
I got one right after getting my PAL, the thing never failed me or let me down.
Just bought one with a 28 inch barrel for hunting. First shotgun I have owned.
I have a 12g and a 20g. Love them both. And...when I bought the 20g 28" I ordered the 18.5" barrel from mossberg and it fits perfectly.
I bought my Maverick 6 years ago, I have never had a single problem, I have cleaned it 3 times I think...very good purchase.
Absolutely love my 88. Perfect little back door guard.
I was thinking of getting the Hogue overmold short LOP stock as well. How is it working for you?
First round through my 88, the front bead flew straight off. Never bothered replacing it or trying to contact them. That was the first gun I ever purchased and to this day I’m beyond in love with it
Thanks hickok for this video, I just picked myself up one of these last Friday. Brought it to the range to shoot clay, and I'd say I got my moneys worth, very solid gun.
what barrel did you get for the clays?
Every 500 part besides the fore grip worked just fine and made the 88 better.
I love mine so much... it never disappoints I've probably shot over 1000 shotgun rounds threw it and still going strong...
Mossberg Maverick was my first shotgun since 14 years old and I am 67 now. I have been a buyer of Mossberg ever since. Mossberg buyer for life. I have a 500, 590, 930, the new 940 Pro Tact and it is so smooth and easy on your shoulders. Love it 😀 👍👍👍
I bought one from Walmart for $188 two years ago. Great budget shotgun!
Got my 18 1/2" barrel 12 guage model, new, at my local Academy about a year ago for $160. It was priced at $199. But they gave me an in store discount. Hec of a deal for such a reliable, tough shotgun.
My first firearm was a Maverick 88. Bought it for 79$ at Service Merchandise. Sold it too a friend who won't sell it back. Just bought another one last week for 249$ This one has a pistol grip and over folding stock.
I remember Service Merchandise. We had one here in town and they had a special room for stereo equipment.
Service Merchandise. Haven’t heard that in a long time. Great store.
Love budget guns...especially the ones that work
Best $200-$250 ever spent ! Definite add on to any gun collection
I like that u put the safety on even after shooting last round and having it laid on table, that's old school shotgunning 101
The paper target shows that it has a nice, tight spread. It ought to be good for hunting or defence.
@@DW133_ ...How, exactly, does the spread of the birdshot pellets fired by the shotgun not have anything to do with the shotgun?
I have a Maverick 88 and absolutely love it all my shotguns are smooth bores I grew up with that which is another thing I like about a Maverick is that they're bluing them instead of just parkerized now I'm always appreciate to see that the company is still taking the time to do that! Great video thank you !
Great shotgun! I have a m88 as well as a 590A1 and can tell you i gravitate toward the m88 more often than the more expensive 590.
Lighter and easier to handle. Same reason I bought a Winchester sxp. Aluminum frame and damn good
@@bobjohnson1633 wouldn’t the lighter weight make the gun kick more?
I have same......and do same!!😂
I've owned my Maverick 88 Security model (20" barrel, 7+1 cap) for several years. It's loaded next to my bed and is my go-to for home defense. Rock solid reliable. I've added a snap on fiber optic sight to replace the brass bead, a hand strap on the foregrip, and I carry extra rounds on the stock. I trust it to protect my family here in Tacoma, WA.
I recently purchased one, I have no complaints.
Life is Good with a pair of Mossberg 12ga shotguns.
Just turned 18 Saturday and bought the all purpose variant yesterday, just waiting the 10 days to get it, loved the video sir, thank you for years of amazing content
That's awesome.its a good choice for a first shotgun
You'll love it. It's built to last. I've put over 5k rounds of buckshot and slugs through mine with zeros issues.
@@MB-jg4tr that's what I've heard from a lot of people so I'm very excited to get it out to the range
@@paulbartlett3128 I agree sir, especially for the quality
@@killercowboy464Still love it? Considering this to be my first shotgun.
I’ve taken quite a few turkeys with my Mav 88. A little secret: A Mav 88 with basic #4 shot will take a Turkey every bit as well as a Super Nova with super expensive, boutique, “turkey loads” that cost 4x as much as basic shotshells.
Im not for all the TSS crazy stuff, but the extra powder charge in dedicated turkey loads is really needed for any shots past 20 yards bud.
@@whiteyfisk9769 my last two turkeys were taken, walking together at 35 yards. 2 3/4” # 4 shot. I’ve used shells from the same case of shells I bought 10 years ago. Hype is hype.
A big rock works just as well
At close range you'll be able to, but not nearly as easily as with a dedicated Turkey load. Hornady 3" magnum BB coyote loads with the versatite wad and 1½oz nickel-plated lead shot is a game changer for Turkey aimed center mass. They're expensive but will extend your range a lot. Check them out.
Loved mine so much I bought another one in a different color. Always work and affordable!
I picked one of these up about 14 years ago. I replaced the fixed stock with an adjustable with a pistol grip. It’s a great home defense shotgun and I’ve even carried it in my truck when traveling.
Good, accurate shotgun. Bought one as my first gun back in February, i would recommend!
I love my 880 😊 I've had it about 13 years and no problems 😎
Bought mine a few years ago from Academy Sports & Outdoors for a whooping $158.00 on sale. I used a Sears/J.C. Higgins (Wichester model 12 clone?) for years! This Maverick 88 seems very similar. Dual slide bars and pretty good action. The only difference that I can "really" tell is the 3 piece bolt assembly. Have put probably 1,000 rounds or more through it (target practice, dove and turkey huunting) and haven't had the first bad issue with it!! Would definitely recommend it!!
It's pretty much a Mossberg 500 with a crossbar safety and a one-piece forend. For only _$200._ It's right up there with Costco's $1.50 hot dog & soda as one of the most insanely great deals you'll ever find.
Ive had mine for over 15 years and it’s slayed ducks, geese and coyotes in snow, rain and mud. Never once let me down. Love that gun.
Bought a maverick,30 inch barrel full choke way back 1993. It was 300 Canadian,I reside north of your border, it came with a mossberg cable lock, great shotgun. So 😢 about the school shooting, 🙏 for the families.
This was my first firearm for 189$ at big5 lol on Black Friday. I was 19 and just had a baby and got a new house. Since then I’ve bought, traded, sold, and learned about nearly 100 guns the one consistent gun that has never left my small arsenal is the maverick 88. Easy one of the best shotgun I bought. You should get one, especially for the price.
I love my 20" 8 shot pistol grip 20ga. It's a ton of fun for sure.
I've also got the 18" 12ga. 6 shot.
Love this shotgun with the bottom of my heart. Cheap, reliable, sturdy, comfy, simple and accurate! Not a single malfunction approximately 400 shells later. Best 200$ I ever spent!
I have one (88) and I love it. I've taken rabbits and pigeons (clay) with it. I've had it about 3 &1/2 years and I like it just as well as my Mossberg 500.
There's very little difference between the two, and for the price jump I don't see any reason to choose the 500. I've put over 5k rounds of buckshot and slugs through my 88 with zero issues.
@@MB-jg4tr I bought the 500 years ago before I'd even heard of the Maverick. I saw the Maverick for 200 bucks and thought 'what the heck '. I'm really glad I got it now. Great shotgun for the money.
I've had one for 17 years. It's a great shotgun
I have an MM 88 I bought in 1995 .It is one of the best defensive weapons I have ever owned. As you can see it is very accurate and comfortable to shoot. For up close and personal it is devastating !!
Paid $239 for mine, I’ve never had a single issue with it, it’s not fancy but it works
Mine was a Christmas gift. It wears a set of magpul stocks. Great HD tool.
Can't believe I bought mys today, and happen to find this vid as well.
My first shotgun when i got licensed. Cheap, simple and works - never had to do anything to it other than clean it every now and again.
I love my Maverick 88 although mine is chambered in 20 gauge
I have one and I love it. It's the cheapest gun I've ever purchased and it's my favorite gun I own. Simple, functional, fun to shoot, and I think it's a beauty too.
Thanks for all your videos @hickok45. Been watching for years!
I love my 500A I purchased it in Virginia Beach back in the late 90’s had to wait 3 days for background check I was on active duty in the military, great shotgun(500A)
I’ve got the 88 & love it. I also use it to hunt occasionally
Wow the timing on this video. Just bought a maverick 88 the other day, came with a field barrel and the 18.5 barrel for $275. Can’t beat that
Pulled my bow for the first time this season last week too. Just about recovered from it this week 🤣😭
Bought mine in 97 when I turned 18. Still runs great. All I've ever done is clean it after going to the range.
The TFBTV 500 rnd stress test, proves it's a reliable choice for the price.
