  • We have had a bunch of Fluval kit aquariums so as Karagen moves into saltwater it only makes sense to try out one of their newest selections in that line. The EVO 13.5 gallon has been an interesting mix of things we liked with their other models and new purpose built amenities with saltwater in mind.

Chronicles of Chris' Fishroom. How much more time and money do you think you've spent compared to salt? I've been thinking about setting one up. The initial cost seems a little prohibitive. I would want a reef tank making it even more expensive.

Salt can be both wonderful and an expensive pain in the rear. The fish absolutely can be wonderful; I have a nice bunch in my 75 gal (beware, you'll want a larger tank for many things!), in addition to invertebrates ranging from reef lobsters and shrimp to snails, hermit crabs and mithrax crabs. Actually, most invertebrates are considered a part of the "clean-up crew" and are something you will not want to leave out! My fish include royal grammas, clowns, blue chromis and a couple of varieties I can't even name off-hand. I also have some soft coral of different varieties and even a scallop. Oh, and an urchin. So many fun little things! Load up and enjoy once you get that tank cycled, but of course you'll have to be careful when your tank is smaller and not really "mature" yet..
Water parameters can be a hassle, but thankfully there are many fish and invert varieties that aren't _too_ sensitive. Indeed, those are what I keep. Among the corals, the zoas (zoanthids) are the most forgiving in my experience, and two of the three kinds I have surviving right now are those.

In such a small tank bad things can happen fast, lets you get a feel for how it is doing before risking any livestock. Cool tank set up. I been doing freshwater tanks for about 35 years. About 20+ years ago I did a nono saltwater tank. I had a couple damsels, a clown fish, a crab, and some live rock. I had the tank running for about 2 years, when I scrapped it and went back to only freshwater tanks due to it was a pain to maintain. I worked at Petco at the time as the animal specialists and directly as the aquatic specialist. The aquatic section I maintained did have saltwater and I was very good at maintaining it. I was able to even keep some exotic species like box fish, as well as the run of the mill fish. Bigger is always better for saltwater, and 40 gallons or more is what is recommended for ease of maintenance. Lots of people do however keep nano tanks. So good luck and I hope you have success.

I was looking around and this looks like it might make a good frag tank. The lights 14000k. I like that honeycomb trim they did, because I hate seeing the waterline from the side and all the mess. I use to not like lids until I had to deal with so much dehydration. Love lids now as they reduce a whole lot of dehydration and it frames in the light so the aquarium glows so lights not leaking out up the walls and on the ceiling. But for those that like to take the top off it still looks good without it and you can hang a kessil light or whatever. That was a good idea they had on that frame support on the bottom. When water drips down the side you can clean it and under the edge of the aquarium because it's up off the furniture.

Not sure if you will see this or not but is the black mesh at the top of the tank built into the glass or stuck on the outside? I am thinking about getting one of these tanks and wanted to put a static cling backing on one side. I was not sure if the mesh would cause issues with that or not.

Chillers are becoming a thing of the passed... unless you're running metal halides (or other high intensity [hot] lighting), never run AC in the summer, or have extremely heavy duty submerged water pumps running, you're tank likely will never need cooling off.
Running a small tank like that for salt, is going to be a fun challenge... especially if it's your first venture into that side of our hobby.
Can't wait to see the tank evolve!

that little out flow adjuster is for the skimmer. depending on how much skim mate is coming out of the skimmer, you adjust the water flow to increase the water going to the skimmer, or decrease the water going to the skimmer.

Besides the saltwater light is there anything else that makes this a better saltwater tank then the flex? Honestly I like the look of the flex better and already have a coral light that I would put on the flex. I simply would remove the flex lid and put a glass or acrylic top on it.

The only thing different with this is the space for the protein Skimmer. Take that away and it's the exact same as all the Fluval filter setups. I would buy this and use it for freshwater anyway.

you should be able to add something pretty quickly due to adding live sand and rock.

Is that tank good for beginners? My friend owns his own shop and sells lots of corals. He said this would be good for a beginner that doesn’t have space for a huge tank.

+Orlando Angulo I think so if you can’t do a bigger one. From what I understand the bigger the better like in freshwater.

I wonder if the light could be changed to better suit freshwater. This is the larger Spec I was hoping for when they released the Flex...

I know that they do make a FW version of this tank... but I can't recall If it's a 5g or a 13.5g.

I'm new to saltwater also..... But I heard that sponge filter that you should get rid of it and they make acrylic media baskets for this tank get them and use for more media because there's not enough for the bacteria you need for a reef tank....also gotta plug that plug because you need flow and them things they have a better one you can upgrade to .....plus I'd get a wave maker you need flow for reef.....they also have things to hide the skimmer if you use one a 3d printed ones
