Thanks for pointing this out. This will change my mind about running the door speakers off of deck power because I would be dissapointed when they distorted way before getting to utilize the amps power. Think I'll run all front and rears from a 4 channel amp now instead. Then a separate amp for a sub. 👍

I have a pioneer avh-x4800bs with network mode. 4 tweeters and 4 6.5's on pioneer 8604. I wired my driver side font and rear tweeter in parallel to 1 front channel of amp. Passenger side front and rear tweeters to the 2nd front channel. I wired the driver side front and rear 6.5's in parallel to 1 rear channel. Passenger side front and 6.5s to the 2nd rear channel. So all 4 tweeters are connected to the front 2 channels and all 4 6.5's are connected to the rear 2 channel's. I have full adjustability of my tweeters separate from my 6.5's. My subwoofers are completely separate from everything else. I love the pioneer radios. With network mode and the 13 band EQ along with the built in crossover. You can get great sound and adjustability from your speakers from the radio. No external gadgets to fool with.
I do not think so because he was only testing the output at 1khz which is tweeter frequency, albeit the low end of a tweeter. so what does it matter the other frequencies going to the tweeter, only what is happening at 1khz is being tested. I know you sought his response not mine but anyway... :)
Very well explained!! I only use deck power for rear fill in speakers, and 2 channel amp powering my jbl component set.. Set all my gains with the SMD.. Well bought expense even if I paid $100.00 for it, get my use out of it.. My amp gain is like quarter volume!!
Parallel is okay if the tweeter and speaker have similar levels of sensitivity however its best to have dedicated tweeter and midbass channels on your amp for a proper blend between mid and tweet... some tweeters have ridiculous sensitivity and running parallel can easily have tweeters overpower your 6.5s since you have no means of controlling each output individually for any kind of blend.
EQ is fine if you have proper amounts/bands of eq but there's only so much you can cut, its not gonna take the place of a proper output control/crossover. I know you guys know this already, just putting it out there for viewers that might want to take sound quality a bit more serious than the average joe.
Five Star Car Stereo i just helped tune a system where it's 3 way front with the pioneer 3800bhs in network. sadly the person was using super tweeters parallel to the mids on their attenuated crossover and it sounded really bad, the supertweet overpowered the mid by far and was overly unbearable. i put the tweet to head power and the tweets were still extremely overbearing loud. they are crossed over with a 10khz at -18 db slope which really tamed and made the tweeters smooth. 4 channel on the midrange and midbass crossed over at proper points as well and the system sounds very good. just an outlier example of how head unit power might work. due to high sensitivity. most cases with soft dome tweeters usually work fine wired parallel as you say.
I have this exact Dayton crossover 3500hz and was planning on doing this with my newly freed up deck power... For an extra set of tweeters peerless by tymphanny ring radiators firing at my windshield dodge caliber.
A clean 4x18W on front components is enough to get loud, and more than enough for normal listening. With good, sensitive speakers 2x18 is actually enough to get loud. mixing head unit and discrete amp is weird tho.
Good vid, but if you run tweeters in parallel on the front speaker channel, wouldn't you be changing the ohms if say the tweeters are 4ohm and the front speakers are 2ohm(my current set up)? And also wouldn't you be taking away power from the front speakers as it's now divided to the tweeters and front speakers? Im about to install some myself and was planning on just using the radio power since all my 4 door speakers and sub is running on a 5-ch amp. Thanks!
run the rear speakers on head unit power. front mid on two channels, front tweeter on two channels dont give any power to the rears if you want any resemblance of a sound stage.
I need some advice/ help I have a set of Skar tweeters a Skar 1200 monoblock and two vd10s I’m currently setting up. I have trimmed my a pillar plastics to fit in the Skar Spx-t tweeters. I have a 2003 chevy 1500 with the Bose system. How should I go about hooking up my tweeters. A buddy said to cut the connections from the old tweeters and wire them in +/- and plug them in the same spot they were plugged in. Is that what I should do?? The Bose system has a amp but I’m not sure if it would power it. How would I get the best performance out of this
If Im running a focal ps165v component set with tweeters on ch1/2, 6.5s on ch3/4, sub on ch5 and using the amps crossovers. How do I know what gain to set tweeter channels at? My component set comes with crossovers, but I dont want to use them. Set is rated at 80wrms, but should the tweeters be given that much power without the crossover in there?
i have dodge challenger with 6 speaker 276 watt alpine sound system i plan on putting components on front & back but using factory amp to power tweeters and using aftermarket amp on mids.front components rated @150 watts rms @ 4ohms and rear 125 watts @ 4ohms. amp for mids rated @ 100 watts @4 ohms x 4 . i'm curios if factory amp is sufficient power for tweeters or too much. i will be using components cross overs on tweeters and amp crossover for mids
Get a Pac AmpPro for your car to get preamp outputs. Don’t use the factory amp for anything. It is has equalization and sound correction that will not play well.
Do shops use the DD-1 to do verified settings? I'm wondering if that tool can be used to cut down on warranty claims due to the customer wrecking their own system. Nothing worse than taking the time and effort to install a system only to have it boomerang'd back to the shop because they decided to (or let a friend) tweak the amp settings and have a bass mekanik clip fest at the local greet & meet.
most shops have no idea what the DD-1 is. Not unless they are heavy into the competition scene. IF you are lucky, they might have an oscilloscope. most places do it by ear.
Wade Hensley unfortunately I agree with Jeff on this topic, but like you I have hope. To stop people playing with their amps we used to use markers to mark the gains or put tape over the gain holes.
lol i have beginner experience but im enthusiastic about car audio...im living in the Caribbean and have never been abroad yet im familiar with the SMD DD-1, CC-1, VM-1, etc...so, to hear that certain shops out there doesn't know about these important tools..its really SAD.

I have a question. I’m sure you’re busy so I’ll try to provide all the info you would need here. Currently I’m using my stock Camry stereo. Non JBL package. JL Audio 400/4 amp. 4ohm. 75watts per channel. Kicker Component Set. 4ohm. 10watt minimum. 100w RMS. 300 max rms. Kicker component speakers, but the crossover was separated from the pair, as, according to the terrible installer I went to, it was pulling too much power from the woofer and causing it to be low volume. So the woofer was wired directly to the amp, and the tweeters were spliced in as well. So the amp is powering both. Without a crossover. My problem is twofold now. 1. My tweeters are distorting, they tried to remedy this by adding a capacitor. It’s not working. 2. My tweeters are much louder than my mid woofer. And I need to push the volume HARD to get my mids to really shine through the rest of the mix, and at the point my tweeters are distorting, and uncomfortably harsh. Plus, I know that without a crossover they’re likely to die. My plan is this. 1. Install an Alpine ILXW650. 2. Keep or remove the capacitor but, take that crossover that was intended for both speakers, and connect it in line AFTER the splice that connects the woofer and tweeter to the amp, but before the tweeter. I do this in the hopes that 1. The crossover works as intended, and will effect JUST my tweeters and 2. If it does in fact drain power, and I know a passive crossover does, then maybe it will bring the tweeter volume into balance with the woofers. Can you, or anyone else hear with knowledge advise if this makes sense?
I have 3.5" infinity ref tweeters wired parallel to front speakers on my 2013 Optima & the distortions are all over it. Speakers are powered by an android headset with45 Rms/channel x 4. Headset has a 5volt pre-out for sub & front. I'm thinking of adding an amp. should I do one amp with 4channel for sub & tweeter or should i do seperate amps for front channel & sub? or would a heavier bass blocker than what the infinity speakers came w/do the trick? HELP

However, I solved the problem already by running a 2 pioneer 4 channel amps with my android headset. 1 amp carries all the speakers while another carries the sub woofers. My speakers really come to life with this set up. The details & depth of my music is incredible.
I'm running my tweets off deck power from a Pioneer. The highest volume setting I use is around 42. Comfortable listening, at highway speeds, is 32-38 (for me). So....no distortion is introduced to my tweets. Someday I'll run a proper amp on my tweets but it's just not a priority right now.

Derek Stechmann most places will not touch other people's work because they do not want to be married to it. If you can find a good place it should take an hour or two. They will probably hit you with $75-100 an hour.

Disagree! I ran tweeters off of the internal amp of a Pioneer 80prs. Not only did I win 3 IASCA comps but one judge even said my high end was excellent at one show. It depends on volume levels, crossover points, and tuning. It does not take much power to drive a tweeter with sensitivity above 90db to satisfying levels. You can drive a tweeter to 100db with less than 20 watts. There again, the 80prs is one hell of a radio for the money. Too bad everyone wants a fancy screen and not sound quality.

You need to put a capacitor on them if they didn’t come with an in-line capacitor. If you don’t you send a full range signal and tweeters don’t handle anything under 1.5khz well at all lol
Itz Dixmond yes! Some factories radios have the factory tweeter crossed over to handle certain frequencies. Now that you don’t have a factory head unit, your tweeter is playing in full range aka attempting to play bass notes (which will blow them VERY fast. My advice to you is don’t even listen to music until you get a cap for your tweeters. Unless you plan on installing new tweeters, wouldn’t recommend using them in full range.
Itz Dixmond do you have factory tweeters? If so just google the crossover point for the tweeters for your specific car model. Most factory tweeters are crossed around 4khz so look for caps that crossover at 4khz.
@@br0ken342 For many years, guitar players have used distortion as something good, from amps to pedals, from tubes to transistors, and even digital algorithms, they have tried everything. Tastes change, and for example, in the 90s, many guitar players used to have some sort of digital distortion pedal in their rigs, today, that sounds kinda cheesy, while 60s and early 70s tube amps are probably the most sought after this days. distortion is great for basses, kick drums, rock vocals, guitars, electric pianos, hammond organs and master busses. Tape distortion is very nice for guitars, percussion, drum kits, vocals, keyboards and master busses. Guitar pedals, are great for snare drums, horns, keyboards, synths, and of course guitars. Transistor based distortions, might sound great just on anything, specially those from high end preamps or analog consoles. So like I said some distortion is good! It all depends on your taste.

Invalid argument. Any sensible person running tweeters from deck power will not play them to distort. Secondly you have to use an amp just to get the loudness of the deck to begin with, yes you may be able to surpass that level...but that is a matter of personal preference. Once a person is getting the tweeter loudness and clarity from the deck there is no need to run them through the amp. The amp may also introduce noise...which is what you should have been testing as well Dean, to get a true picture and comparison. while your RCA signal might be clean....do the comparison with the RTA hooked up to the amp side of things and see what noise the amp introduces. At the end of the day its a matter of personal preference. If you like loud highs that only the amp may attain, then use the amp.....or if the deck is able to play at the level you want without clipping...then deck power is fine
I agree with Happy Star. I plan on getting the new Sony AX-7000 with 50 watts rms/channel x 4, to power my front speakers. I will test it first with just the head unit power, if it sounds good and loud/clear, leave it alone. If not, then I will just add an external amp. I say to try it first, you can always add power if needed.
Thank you for convincing me to NOT put my tweeters on my head unit... I just need to figure out how I can power up my midbass speakers without the tweeters being too dang powerful when I'm using a two channel and running them in parallel

Jeff DaChef I agree totally, but don't forget most high end stand alone tweeters have some form of volume control. -4, 0, +4 db.

J Cook what 2 ohm speakers are you using? Most of the time if you are using 4 ohm speakers this is not a problem

should you connect the tweeter to the amp or tap in the wire on your speakers and connect them together and then run it to the amp?

Your head unit is to weak, infiniti speakers usually are high power, distortion comes in at higher volumes when the head unit gets overloaded

very good video,s I am learning a lot from you guys; I have a project upcoming and could really use your advise; I have 70 chevy c-10 which has a CUSTOM AUTO SOUND "CONCURS SERIES HEAD SINGLE DIN- my current audio system consists of (2) 6.5" standard one near the bottom of each door- I also have (2) tweeters 1 each in the upper portion of each door-I just added (2) 8" subwoofers in a "sealed box- these are 4 ohms each set up in parallel-powered by a JBL-GTR601AMP; can I connect the (2) new tweeters to the existing (2) tweeters ? or add (2) 4" HERDIO COMPACT MARINE STEREO BOX SURFACE MOUNTED SPEAKERS; I HAVE (REMAING INPUTS ON THE AMP !! ANY ADVICE APPRECIATED much thank,s keep up the videos I really need them !! PATRICK.P

Wow. Great technical proof. Can't argue with that logic. If using a 6 to 8 dsp, should you only use the 4 pre-outs for inputs to the dsp? There's little info online for using a dsp. Will the processor still give 8 outputs with only 4 inputs?

Disagree! I ran tweeters off of the internal amp of a Pioneer 80prs. Not only did I win 3 IASCA comps but one judge even said my high end was excellent at one show. It depends on volume levels, crossover points, and tuning. It does not take much power to drive a tweeter with sensitivity above 90db to satisfying levels. You can drive a tweeter to 100db with less than 20 watts. There again, the 80prs is one hell of a radio for the money. Too bad everyone wants a fancy screen and not sound quality.

I have tweeters and they start cracking and skipping when at volume 22
You need to put a capacitor on them if they didn’t come with an in-line capacitor. If you don’t you send a full range signal and tweeters don’t handle anything under 1.5khz well at all lol

Itz Dixmond yes! Some factories radios have the factory tweeter crossed over to handle certain frequencies. Now that you don’t have a factory head unit, your tweeter is playing in full range aka attempting to play bass notes (which will blow them VERY fast. My advice to you is don’t even listen to music until you get a cap for your tweeters. Unless you plan on installing new tweeters, wouldn’t recommend using them in full range.

Itz Dixmond do you have factory tweeters? If so just google the crossover point for the tweeters for your specific car model. Most factory tweeters are crossed around 4khz so look for caps that crossover at 4khz.

@@br0ken342 For many years, guitar players have used distortion as something good, from amps to pedals, from tubes to transistors, and even digital algorithms, they have tried everything. Tastes change, and for example, in the 90s, many guitar players used to have some sort of digital distortion pedal in their rigs, today, that sounds kinda cheesy, while 60s and early 70s tube amps are probably the most sought after this days.
distortion is great for basses, kick drums, rock vocals, guitars, electric pianos, hammond organs and master busses. Tape distortion is very nice for guitars, percussion, drum kits, vocals, keyboards and master busses. Guitar pedals, are great for snare drums, horns, keyboards, synths, and of course guitars. Transistor based distortions, might sound great just on anything, specially those from high end preamps or analog consoles.
So like I said some distortion is good!
It all depends on your taste.

Invalid argument. Any sensible person running tweeters from deck power will not play them to distort. Secondly you have to use an amp just to get the loudness of the deck to begin with, yes you may be able to surpass that level...but that is a matter of personal preference. Once a person is getting the tweeter loudness and clarity from the deck there is no need to run them through the amp. The amp may also introduce noise...which is what you should have been testing as well Dean, to get a true picture and comparison. while your RCA signal might be clean....do the comparison with the RTA hooked up to the amp side of things and see what noise the amp introduces. At the end of the day its a matter of personal preference. If you like loud highs that only the amp may attain, then use the amp.....or if the deck is able to play at the level you want without clipping...then deck power is fine
I agree with Happy Star. I plan on getting the new Sony AX-7000 with 50 watts rms/channel x 4, to power my front speakers. I will test it first with just the head unit power, if it sounds good and loud/clear, leave it alone. If not, then I will just add an external amp. I say to try it first, you can always add power if needed.
We only use that power to power cheap tweeters

Thank you for convincing me to NOT put my tweeters on my head unit... I just need to figure out how I can power up my midbass speakers without the tweeters being too dang powerful when I'm using a two channel and running them in parallel
I think some crossovers have settings for tweeters volume
