Hope your feeling a bit better Andy. Im going to water injection to cool the charge down on my set up. Hopefully it will help with early detonation. I have put in a msd variable ignition adjuster to find the sweet spot for the ignition while driving. Helped a lot with detonation and cold running.
I used SUs on some of my early prototype turbocharged Porsche engines. That is a good start and helps get things running. I ended up with Carters and then FI. Then after 1976, they came out with their 930s and that was it.
That is a nice setup it should be able to produce a lot of power when you need it. I would like to have something like that but those super charger set ups are expensive. Good luck with your project and please post the finish results.

Eric thankyou so much for your input and yes jak Rabey and I have had a chat more than once or twice and he is my preferred type 4 engine builder once the engine is back in the car I will place it on a rolling road and test the exhaust ss it is and in the conventional form to se which is best it's hard to know how to listen to the supercharger guru or the respective engine builder . I feal like the rope in a tug of war only time will tell. this was just something to do going through radiotherapy and chemotherapy to tack my mind working sadly I am unable to finish it just yet but there is always tomorrow. Wow I have a type 4 also getting all the parts for it nothing fancy just a scat torq cam 96 mm piston Weber 34 ICT for a fiberglass dune buggy. Your engine sounds like a beast do is that supercharger from a ford and carbs from a 240 z I'm just guessing that awesome you made all that stuff work together

Nice looking motor, but it seems like you would have used some side draft Weber's because it would have flowed a lot more air than what you got on there.🍺 ( and probably would have started quicker too!)
I wouldn't let the arm chair welding inspectors ruin your mood. At least half of them have probably never welded aluminium. If none of it leaks then it is just a matter of making sure it is all stout enough. I believe you would be much better off with a larger diameter merged exhaust. I'd be leery of cranking the psi up. Also the rpm's as i hear the head bolt layout is not as sound as a type I. Love your effort, just a few post build issues to work out. Nothing odd about that. Great therapy as part of your treatment regimen. Hope to see you posting video for years to come.

Holley 3110 is supposed to real close out of the box. At least for a turbo draw thru set up but those Solex are well regarded too for their simplicity. Always dug supercharged type I engines. You can hear the power in the exhaust note every second they run.
Be careful! From what I gather type 4 has a less desirable head bolt pattern which can create combustion leak issues that will quickly damage a set of pricy big valve ported performance cylinder heads.
forced inductions need a lot more exhaust that that, step up the header size to 1.625 min. i hope you fixed that shroud if it's a bergerman shroud. and what is that knock? sounds like a [power inbalance, witch will kill the case and the bearings quickley. The small header will crack the heads!!

I don't see how that actually works, the outlet pressure from the supercharger would normally be higher than atmospheric pressure, therefor it needs to feed the intake side of the carburetors. Seems like that would blow air back out of the carbs in the wrong direction.
Does it overheat at all? *I've heard that no matter how good airflow or pressure you have going over the cooling fins aircooled engines will always overheat!*
andy sheppard: IF I'am not mistaken I'd say that is a Type 4 VW engine used in the later model VW vans and the Porsche 914's. Nice build, one thing I would change is the exaust system a 4 into 1 header system will do it some justice. I'am building a "Jake Raby" 2056 T4 for my 65' VW sedan. Type 4's are excellent engines and produce serious torque and HP's and are far more reliable than trying to build up a Type 1. Thanks for sharing!. E.dee

andy sheppard: Keep in mind, those Dragsters are all bottom end and only run for a few seconds. As for a reliable street engine, some back pressure and balance is needed. If you get a chance, look up "Jake Raby/ Raby engine development", Jake is known to be one of the "Utmost noted authorities" on the Type 4 engine and has performed hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars engineering exaust systems for the Type 4 engine. each exaust system is custom designed to each engine he builds. Andries Geddes scrape yards second hand there must be plenty about . I'm geting close to two hundred hp from this 2000cc engine but its not about the hp its about the torque.
Ron Schulz The aluminum @ supercharger to mount the carb's? Not the best but acceptable if no leaks. Homemade job. Maybe he used that Alum. arc welding rod.

It's a well proven draw thru system. I've been building and designing draw thru systems, both turbo and supercharged for over 40 years.
