      Scotty Kilmer There's one more advantage to a supercharger vs a turbo, they don't deaden the exhaust note like turbos do. So they sound a whole lot better. Correct me if I'm wrong.

      Scotty Kilmer hey Scotty I like your videos and I was looking at this video about supercharger versus turbocharger I rather go with a naturally aspirated engine that way when those superchargers or turbochargers go you got to pay a lot of money to replace them you have no problem with a naturally aspirated engine but I do like ram-air what you think about that

      Centrifugal superchargers, are nothing more than belt driven turbos.
      Granted, you can change pulley sizes.
      But they don't work from idle.
      Unlike a Rootes, blower.
      What you don't realise, a turbo is always spinning.
      And providing torque, with no loss to the motor.
      And next to no lag, properly sized, for the application.
      400 ponies, at my back tyres, with a tame setup.
      More available quite, easily!
      Oh, and i am an "old school" guy.
      Impressed the shit out of me, especially the fuel economy!
      I'll take that at, $6.7275 a gallon.
      That is a 4.5 liter gallon.
      8 liters, per 100 kilometers.
      I can get, less than that, at 110 kmph.
      Like, 7.8 litres, per 100.

    Both are good choices for making good power. Some of the negatives about a supercharger is they put added stress on the crank and they take hp to spin them

    Modern TVS and twin screws aren't the old inefficient blowers of the 60s. They have bypass valves so they don't build pressure at idle or coasting, they don't heat soak and have less parasitic loss.

    I love supercharger because I want that direct power and easier to maintain. My dad had a ‘70 Chevrolet SS 454 with a whipple supercharger. Only problem he had was the pulley but he had the car for a long time.

    Turbo's rely on WASTED exhaust gasses, plus running low boost you usually don't lose any MPG (you can gain a few MPG sometimes) because pumping losses decrease.

  • @reds7vn644
    @reds7vn644 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Superchargers require engine from the power to run them so therefore you were losing power in the beginning before the supercharger can ever generate that horsepower back on top of that the supercharger you are correct does give you that instant gratification but it quickly Fades and dies where's the turbocharger is the opposite depending on how your setup but the most common way is they consistently pull throughout the Power Band. There's a reason Lingenfelter runs turbos and not superchargers and there's a reason why all the hyper cars and even super cars run turbos they're more effective in generating horsepower.

    Ok well there’s a flaw that’s been pointed out numerous times superchargers are belt driven a turbo that kicks in at 2k at 10psi at 2k the supercharger will most likely be at 2-3psi and at peak power you have 10 superchargers have linear lag where you don’t feel it ass much because it’s a slow climb turbo lag is spool the full boost

    If you want an American muscle car with lots of low end grunt, slam down the accelerator and send up clouds of smoke, squeal those tires so everyone hears you within 10 miles, then super charging is for you. If you want refinement power more along the lines of James Bond, power that begets more power without all the smoking tires, then you want AWD with turbos to put all that power to the road to build speed as fast as possible without all the burning rubber. This is mainly the difference between high powered muscle cars and super cars. Super cars generally have the entire package suspension and breaks to go along with all that power. Muscle cars generally only have power and are built only for burning rubber, cheap so most Americans can afford to have a powerful car, and that cheap comes from leaving off all the rest of the stuff that makes a super car super. The awd cars are also built to carry a lot of that speed around corners. The muscle cars are built to slide around corners in a semi controlled skid.

    This is a strange video to me. Belt driven power adders put incredible strain and wear on the crankshaft main bearings. They also have a parasitic loss that is usually equal to the power they are making. PD blowers have very real heat soak issues that once warm take away all the power they could make and then some. This is the root cause of a class action law suit filed against GM by c7 Z06 corvette owners. Poor Scotty, Perhaps after you see the twin turbo hot V setup on the c8 you will understand. Turbo's are the pinnacle, the holy grail of power adders. It is a gross lack of experience in this arena that has brought you to the publication of this video.

    I don't understand how a supercharger is an easier install unless you're comparing a car with a awesome aftermarket availability for both but poor adaptability for the turbo. If you have a car that never expected a supercharger you're SOL on a roots type pretty much at all and G chargers are rare and almost exclusive to tiny cars. If I want to put a turbo on a Ford Tempo, I can fabricate a set of headers from off the shelf parts and an entry level tig machine and have a stage one by the end of the day. On a car that has a mild steel header option it gets even easier because you can buy a mig machine for peanuts from HF.

      Here's what I think. Turbos are better for highway pulls and taking it to the dragstrip, but superchargers are way better for daily driving. Since you have turbo lag, when you're daily driving you're never really gonna get or feel that power unless you're doing random pulls on the highway, where as superchargers the power is always there and can get insane pulls just because you put your foot down a little while you were coming off a red light lol

      @102wingnut 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Micheal Dimitrick depends on the type of each you are using. A Whipple or Roots -type charger does move air pretty linearly with little lag but the ProCharger and similar radial style compressors increase boost exponentially so you still have to get the revs up high to get the full boost. A good twin or twin-scroll turbo will minimize the effects of turbo lag but they do add complexity to your setup.

    • @331SVTCobra
      @331SVTCobra 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Micheal, are you being sarcastic?
      A centrifigal blower doesn't make full boost till the entire engine revs sufficiently. A turbo spools up just as fast as rotational inertia allows it to.
      "More boost" has nothing to do with supercharger/turbo, but is determined by sc gearing or turbo sizing, and in either case there's a pop-off valve.

    I have had both. Turbos can be troublesome in regards to heat management. They add ALOT of heat up in the engine bay. Turbo exhaust manifold brings your intake air temps way up and can also melt some of your plastic parts that are near it. You can also heat soak your inter cooler really quick. Couple of hard runs and your car is now not fast anymore because your car is pulling timing to deal with the over heated air that’s causing the engine to knock due to pre ignition of the gas. Many of these issues you don’t have to deal with with a blower.

A good turbo setup will significantly exceed the gross torque of a supercharged car. That being said, all the points made in the video are correct. A supercharger kit is MUCH easier to install and package than a turbo kit and the under hood temps are lower as well.

      Except for the superchargers on the Detroit 6-71/8-71 etc that go for a million plus miles w/o being touched. They also end up in commercial boats where they last 10's of thousands of hours in some of the worst conditions possible running hard all day without any issue. Remember, a boat engine is under heavy load 100% of the time while underway, so it never reaches a point (short of surfing down a giant wave) where the engine isn't in conditions comparable to you pulling a 10,000 lb load up a steep hill and maintaining that speed, all day, every day, which means they're under high boost 100% of the time.

    Nice, I like the instant power of a supercharger too and the whine it makes is music to your ears! You should have talked about the different between centrifugal superchargers and roots superchargers, personally I prefer a top mounted roots style supercharger to a centrifugal supercharger mounted at the front of the engine. I've seen some really cool complete roots style supercharger kits that even include a tuner for the engine made by companies like edelbrock that are made for late model car and made to fit under the stock hood. Recently I saw a video of a roots style supercharger being installed on a late model Camaro and it replaced the intake manifold and sat in the valley right there and was nice and low profile and it looked super clean, the engine looked almost stock when it was done you could barely tell it was there!

    Hey Scotty, thank you so much for this video. It was very informative.
    Now, although superchargers provide an immediate increase in boost corresponding to engine RPM, they do have a heavy impact on drivability under regular conditions when extra power and boost aren't needed, not to mention the parasitic loss to drive them.
    I am considering the Turbonetics turbocharger kit for my 2010 camaro ss automatic (LS99).
    It is 50 state legal, comes with everything needed for the install including upgraded injectors and a Diablo tuner for the ECU.
    It also does not require the engine to be cammed! So it has minimum impact on city driving and does not attract any more attention when driving at sedate speeds.
    Otherwise, it adds 200 HP and the installation takes only a few hours at their authorized installer.
    It would mean a lot to me if I could have your expert opinion before I go ahead.

    It's more expensive to manufactur a supercharger, that's another reason they aren't as common on stock engines.

      Love Machine Start with forged steel pedals and a smaller sprocket. Then add anabolic steroids to Leg Day and you'll be guaranteed 50+ whp. I also recommend Mickey Thompson 3.25" slicks for better traction. 😏
