  • CAT 660B scrapers get another life, repowered with Cummins engines to meet California Tier 4 requirements. Neat seeing new CAT's like the D10T2 pushing old girls like these 660B scrapers that just keep on going.

    I was one of the 3 who did a similar swap while working for Cummins Intermountain in '82 or '83. Swapped the Cat 346 with a Cummins K1160. The 346 is an overhead cam V8 while the 1160 is of course an inline 6. It required lengthening the frame between the front engine mount and the radiator. Quite a job.

    Back in the seventies and eighties we used to build raised plyboard decks for The Operators feet because of the heat buildup probably the same 660 B's that we had back then they were down in LA

    Yup that’s the new guys scraper for the summer. After 3 months being a laborer in the industry I
    “Graduated” into a site truck driver. Next day I came in early and got in a new Cat D-400 and promptly got booted, than tried a couple D-350s with AC booted, a couple D-350s with no AC booted. I asked the foreman where’s my truck. He told me they’re taking it off the lowboy now and he’d give me a lift to get it. It was a 1987 Cat D-25C with no brakes bald tires and milky plexiglass for windows that couldn’t open. If the 90 degree heat wasn’t bad enough I was the one who had to take the Volksboulders so the new trucks didn’t get beat on. Them days are dead now greenhorns only want to run the machines or stare at their phones and if you yell at them to get to work they either quit or report you for bullying and using coarse language. Idk how this video just triggered me like that but it’s got a guy all sorts of disgruntled

      Hello Tim. Do you work for ACI? We repowered their fleet of 660’s with Detroit Diesel S-60’s in the mid 2000’s under the Carl Moyer program. I was a PSM for DD then. I remember the old owner (great guy) would come around with his son when we doing the first start up and cooling tests. They were on a big job in Temecula. Cat wasn’t interested in re powering them so we did and then Cat came along to try and change his mind. He told Cat that the ship had sailed. He asked if we could repower some of the dozers with our S2000 engines but we didn’t have a good scavenge lube system for high angularity.

    • @tutekohe1361
      @tutekohe1361 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To answer your question, no they can’t make a Scraper powerful enough to load itself under all conditions. Even twin engine Scrapers normally are more productive when push loaded. Yes it is mainly a traction issue. Having two push tractors and operators may seem inefficient, but remember they are pushing maybe a dozen Scrapers consecutively, making this type of operation the most efficient way of moving large volumes of dirt.

    • @sidcostello7532
      @sidcostello7532 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's like this. Scrapers....even twin engine ones....in most material, will just spin the tires trying to self load. Rubber tires cannot provide traction enough to self load, so the push - pull concept of the twin engine machines was thought up....and it was a brilliant idea. As far as the single engine machines. The idea of a large Cat designed to rip the area being loaded, while being capable of push loading scrapers....especially being that the dozer is already there ripping, just made the entire process at least 4 times more productive while using the same amount of fuel as before. The idea came out of Peterson Tractor out of San Leandro, as well as the first twin engine scraper and push block bail hook set up.
