I'm the developer behind the Minecraft-like voxel engine for the Dreamcast. I was initially hesitant to release the Gamecube port, but seeing games like Xeno Crisis legally launch on the platform has made me reconsider.
There is nothing illegal about developing and releasing software for a device that you bought. Stop letting paranoia prevent you doing something that you have a right to do. Would you stop wiping your ass if you thought Nintendo didn't approve of it?
It was inevitable that the Dreamcast scene would peak like this. Thanks to the console being so easy to crack, it’s been able to live on past its 2001 cancellation. It may have died commercially but it never died in the eyes of indie and homebrew developers!
Must concur, ClassiCube is far closer to replicating early beta Minecraft with building as its main pitch. Still, it's highly multiplatform, working on 9x PCs and early Macs, as well as Dreamcast, Gamecube, PS2, Xbox, 360, PS3, Wii, and beyond. There's even netplay (with Dreamcast dial-up support) for building with others.
But unbelievably dumb in its marketing. Only Sega can spit on its customers' collective face and shove another console in the market thinking it will eat the market share of competitors like they did with the Genesis.

What's crazy is I bought a dreamcast in high school because of the half-life screenshot on the box. I never got to play the game till about 2014 on my dreamcast. Crazy times I love my DC still.❤
When I saw Halo CE, I couldn't believe it. But then I actually looked it up and it actually doesn't exist, just a Quake conversion mod for the dreamcast 😭.
That "pregnancy test DOOM" is just the plastic shell, gutted and with entirely custom hardware glued inside of it. It's in no way playing on the pregnancy test. 5:49
if you read the thread the creator posted, the TL;DR of it is that the game is being played on a machine external to the pregnancy test. the actual pregnancy test *did* have that display in it, and foone hacked it so it could display external images thanks to a custom arduino program. the test isn't running doom, but it is *displaying* doom with minimal changes to the hardware.
It's a testament to the Dreamcast's legacy that fans are still dedicated to make games and ports for the system, given such a very short shelf life and paltry sales to other consoles at the time would've warrented it as forgettable shovelware
When I started collecting game consoles the dream cast was the first Sega console I got in my collection. (I even have the box though I'm missing a styrofoam insert) I had fun with it for a few year and haven't touched it since. I'm really tempted to show it some love and do some mods to it.
Kinda funny at 1:14 to say "Why did the DC have no copy protection when the Saturn had intense copy protection" when the Saturn had some of the worst copy protection. It was easily bypassed with a CD swap at the SEGA license screen.
The GDEMU is actually pretty cheap! You can find clones of it on AE for as low as 45 euros, thats how i got mine, i got the V 5.15b Which is not the latest but plays 99% and even the ones that were buggy have a patch like code veronica and skies of arcadia. Also GTA 3 was actually supposed to come out on the Dreamcast and the game did start developement for the Dreamcast but was scrapped in 2001 and developement moved to PS2.
I was just about to say the same thing about gdemu being affordable these days. I got the same 5.15b version for $39 US dollars. I read through a few forums and plenty of homebrew devs felt that that was the version to own over version 5.20 since most of them think that updating the gdemu is unnecessary. And I don’t even have the plastic cover that goes over the gdemu, but I do have a DreamPSU power supply with a separate laptop power cord to plug into it for lower power wattage
The worst part about the GD-EMU isn't even that the original is expensive. Rather, it's that the creator of it is really bad about keeping stock and letting people know when restocks happen, leading to it getting cloned basically perfectly and sold for pennies on AE to meet demand. There's also the TerraOnion MODE which is pretty good, but it's also a TerraOnion product making it both expensive and a bit iffy.
So happy to see an overview of the Dreamcast homebrew from last year. It’s amazing what people have brought to one of my favorite consoles of all time. I might actually try burning a few CD-r discs since so far I’ve only used them on the Saturn.
2:52 RIP my ears. But seriously always love your videos. I still want to see other consoles being under powered - but captured through a retrotink which has an excellent timebase corrector for when the video signal inevitably goes out of spec 😂
I wonder how much better the dreamcast might have done if the indie scene was able to thrive officially, like Indies have been some of the most successful games in recent years that I can fully imagine a world where if Saga had an indie publishing arm and made development of dreamcast games easy for the average person we might be in a different position where Saga is still a major competitor, maybe xbox wouldn't have hit off with Saga still in the race or maybe we'd be in a four way market rather than the three way market we're currently in.
Postal clip at the very end. If Postal2 were ever ported to Dreamcast not only would I shit my pants, I'd proceed to shit the pants of everybody in the room. I'd get a Dreamcast just for that, and if it had the Fudge Pack I'd get the most expensive special edition Dreamcast I could find. It would literally be the killer app.

It's highly unlikely you'll need to replace any part other than the optical reader. In a couple decades you'll need to recap it. The Dreamcast, like the Saturn, was built like a tank and is unlikely to need servicing any time soon. For the gamepad, second hand ones are in great supply and you can easily get third party modern units that are high quality. The VMU has been replaced with projects like the VM2, which are superpowered VMUs.
If your disc drive is going out, you might as well get a gdemu. They’re really not expensive like the video says. And replace the power supply with a DreamPSU to prevent any overheating
