One of the greatest tenors of all the time. My father died 86 Years old, i found two thick Schellack Records in his library. Unforgotten Music and Artist, that died because of improper treatment in Switzerland, Zurich Hospital.
A small man with a bell-clear, smooth, powerful, apparently effortless voice! This rendition of the "Lagrima" brings me indeed to tears. Because of Schmidt's magnificent singing AND because of the shame, the terrible, terrible waste of his early death. He will never be forgotten.
Schmidt messes up a couple of words, but it is sung so beautifully with an interpolated trill and B- Flat that he kind of makes this interpretation unique. A very elegant singer.
Never tired of this, replay, humbles those so called singers using microphone... highest class of rendition of the most beautiful tenor aria. Thank You very much.
Such a great natural talent and beautiful timbre. He must have found that elusive "placement" of the voice at a very early age. The end was tragic, yes, and something we will probably never forget...
I have to agree with you,its a tough call between jusi and scmidth but for me its scmidth, there wasnt much this guy could not sing, and he did it with no bad habits,a pity his small stature 5ft did not allow him to appera on operatic stage but he did broadcast on radio and made movies he is a treasure
@@amantedellopera1681 hate to disagree a little bit. I love both too, I think Jussi's is more to the opera role requirement, he did not put too much sad and desperation into it, kind of unsure, hopeless. This Mr. Joseph's singing is unique and perfect, yet a bit too deep into the role of that young farmer.
@@道-p2e we can agree to disagree, jussi was brilliant no doubt but his singing can be a little cold, scmidth has a warmer tone in his voice and he is supposed to be deeply into the role and aria for me he is marginally better suited
@@amantedellopera1681 it is swedish mountain cold. But strong and in depth. I am narrowing down on this role of the song, I feel it is a bit overdone because it is not that desperate and it is not a tragic opera. Singing alone without the operatic story be perfect though... best,
@SHICOFF1 Joseph Smith (1904 - 1942) died only 38 years old practically killed by the nazis and their Swiss collaborators. That story that he got work permit the next day after his death is just water under the bridge. I don't believe it and it doesn't matter in fact. His tragic death will never be forgotten or forgiven. RIP JOSEPH SMITH, THE NIGHTINGALE FROM CERNOWITZ.
I hope we never forget how this man with the gorgeous voice was cut down too soon by the nazis. Beware America, they lurk among us yet. If you value such music vote in 2020
What a beautiful voice! The fate of this man let be the reminder to people, what Nazis were and still are. They killed such a talented man in the age of 38 just for him being a Jew!!!
You are much appreciated for posting Joseph Schmidt

Love, not hate is what our world needs ~ Forgiving, is a sign of Greatness, don´t you agree ?
@@ingriddoppler I will never forgive what was done to him!
Joseph was a great tenor in every language and as well a Cantor in Synagogues with sanctity in depth
Agreed!
A wonderful performer and cantor. The best.

An elegant interpretation of this aria.Schmidt was a terrific tenor who’s life was tragically cut short at around age 38. R.I.P.

@silverbud Jussi and the mexican tenor Villanzo so young and so passionate, got encore at Vienna opera, but this is very special indeed.
heaven
Grande tenor!
The LOST ART of SINGING - CHIAROSCURO being the key Non-existent in the professional operatic world.
Czernowitz, Joseph's Schmit's home, is where we spent the war years. i still yearn for that beautiful city.and consider it my home.

A great favorite. He suffered terrible end. However, his Singing of Heut Ist Die Schoenste Tag In Meinem Leben never fails to make my day better!
Yes, that's a great song. I've got it up someplace.
