I loved hearing yalls stories about moving for to France for love! I met my french boyfriend this year during my last semester of college. He was studying abroad at my university and it was like fate meeting him (on Valentines Day in fact). Then the pandemic hit and his trip got cut short in March when he had to return to France. Even tho we had only known each other for one month, we both knew it was love and we wanted to continue building a relationship. Almost 7 months later, I managed to make my way to France to be with my love once more. I’ve been here since October and will be leaving in January. Its been the best decision I’ve made for myself. Of course I was scared before coming because like what if things didn’t work out once I moved in with him here? But in the end all has been nothing but success and love. I don’t quite know what we’re going to do once I go back to the US but we have talked about it and are quite committed to being with each other asap! Thanks for the videos and community space to be able to talk about this kind of stuff! ❤️

I just moved here for my French husband. It is so true about feeling like you lose your identity. I don’t speak the language, I’m out of work and don’t have my support system here. It’s really difficult but my husband is so good to me and is worth this big move. I can’t wait to see more positives while living here in the South of France, it will definitely come easier when I speak the language.

Very interesting topic! I did it the other way around, I moved from France to Canada to study and fell in love there but I had to go back to France to finish my master's degree. It was literally heart breaking, but I managed to move back to Canada again. It didn't work out in the end, but I don't regret my decision. I still live in Canada now and as you said it really changes who you are and how you see your life. I come from a small town in France and living abroad wasn't something I ever thought I'd do but it happened and it's opened so many opportunities and showed me there is so much I can do.

Salut. I made the trip in the opposite direction. I left France to move to the US almost 20 years ago to be with my American girlfriend, now wife, after two years of long distance relationship. But it is amazing how similar my pros and cons would be. And at the end, even if it was not easy to give up my career and to left my family, I have no regret and would do it again if I had too.

Oh gosh! The video made me smile! I have not much in common with France but I did move to another country for love, and even though it is within the EU and not that far away, I definately agree on every point you mentioned! I mean, the experience lets you grow in a way that probably would not have been possible back home. It makes me do things I'dnever thinkg were possible in the first place (or that was the case for me at least). Also I really felt it when you talked about the change in the identity. Before the move I had a great life, after the move I all of the sudden became the foreign girlfriend, and then had to work hard to build a new life here for me and a new, blended identity. And I also enjoy sharing this new culture with others. Great video! :)

Thanks so much for this ladies! It's reassuring to hear your perspective about moving to France. I've had the similar feelings about the move.
Yes to feeling like I disappeared when I got here to France. His friends, his job, his apartment, his things...where am I in all this? Yes, to having the move change me in such positive, insightful ways. Yes to not seeing myself with a "good old Canadian fella" again. (once you have Frenchie...so prejudiced lol). Yes to coming to love French culture, being changed and fascinated by it.
I came to this much later in life than you both. Before my adventure, I had the family, owned a business, the house, two cars, two kids, then got divorced. After rediscovering myself and my life, when I started dating again, I met someone online (At first I thought I was being catfished) and had recently quit my job. We got to a point where it was either let's meet or go our separate ways, so I said, "Why don't I visit you?" I hopped on a plane three weeks later, and voila! Three years after that, I am in France. By the way...I don't recommend long distance relationships. It was hard when I first got here, and wondered if all the magic was in my head, but then again, when you move in with anyone, there is an adjustment period.
    Thanks for your openness. Bisous.

Unrelated question, but how was it like to move to France at 19 yo and suddenly become an "adult", able to go to bars and drink beers, wine and whatever you want, knowing that you couldn' t do that before 21 yo back home.. Were you super shy and responsible or did you go like crazy for the 1 st month ?? About moving abroad, i was just so proud of myself looking back because i was able to succeed in a country with a different language from mine.. Everything is different.. Growing in France, you know the codes, you have your social security number, you know how to look for a job, do interviews, write your CV.. Abroad it' s different.. Everything is new.. Your phone provider, banks, websites to apply for a job or look for a place to stay.. Being able to succeed abroad makes you a 100 % sure that you can succeed back home, it just feels so easy after that.. And you realise that you could always tell yourself that it might not be that hard to do it (move abroad, find a job, a house, make friends), but you realise how wrong you were once you actually do it.. Same difference between thinking that you can run a marathon and actually running it

    • @UnintentionallyFrenchified
      @UnintentionallyFrenchified  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Good question. Honestly, i wasn't that crazy when i could officially drink in France because I wasn't exactly following the law in the US when i was underage so it wasn't like a ridiculous amount of freedom. But with that being said, i was ABSOLUTELY enjoying the study abroad life and all the partying that went with it :) And I completely agree with you that I was the most proud of the actual language speaking skills i managed to learn during my time there and that i was successful with it!

Rosie, I understand what you mean about the guilt part. I think it's one of the major reasons my own marriage ultimately didn't work out--my wife was from China and she probably felt guilty about choosing me over her family, and in her culture that's an even bigger deal than in the Western one.

Fortunately, nowadays, we have ZOOM and so on. Those video-conf. tools help. My husband and I are both American (although I also have dual citizenship with the UK even though I had never been there until 2019). We’d be traveling full time in Europe if it weren’t for the fact that we have a custody schedule with my husband’s ex wife that prevents us from moving abroad with the kids. In about 10 years we can move abroad and we can’t wait. I had never really left the country before (other than like an hour or two over the Canadian border when I was 8, before you even needed a passport to get in), and then we went to Europe in 2019. Before we left, I remember telling my husband I was scared to go because it would change everything. I knew how heavily I’d get bit by the travel bug and how I would want to stay in Europe. It’s funny, because I didn’t know I was a dual citizen my whole life, but from a very young age I was obsessed with the UK and Ireland and always felt like Europe was calling me. Going there only made that feeling stronger. I am counting down the days until we can go again, and until we can move to Europe. My husband is a web developer so it’s very easy to work remotely. Someone from my husband’s team at work just got hired by a company in Finland and is moving there with his family and we are SO jealous.
On a note more related to the video, I married a foreigner the first time around. He was Brazilian and I loved him more than anything but after 7 years of marriage and when I was 7 months pregnant with our second child, he left, and we were divorced within a month. 10/10 would not recommend 😂

Then moved to England with my husband so he can finish his studies/degree in English ... then move back to France .... I appreciate that my husband has been separated from his family the longest, for so many years now... sometimes I take it for granted, how come I ever forget about it when I was in the very same situation. I feel guilty too for his "sacrifice" . He loves me so much , and I believe for this reason, I love him even more.

@@UnintentionallyFrenchified I think Amélie refers to the Rainbow Warrior affair > en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinking_of_the_Rainbow_Warrior
The sinking of the Rainbow Warrior was a bombing operation by the "action" branch of the French foreign intelligence services, the Direction générale de la sécurité extérieure (DGSE), carried out on 10 July 1985. During the operation, two operatives sank the flagship of the Greenpeace fleet, the Rainbow Warrior, at the Port of Auckland in New Zealand on its way to a protest against a planned French nuclear test in Moruroa. Fernando Pereira, a photographer, drowned on the sinking ship.
Several political figures, including then New Zealand Prime Minister David Lange, have referred to the bombing as an act of terrorism or state-sponsored terrorism.

    Cordialement.
