My potential French Nationality?

    Don't forget to register your French marriage at the New Zealand embassy. It is not automatic.
    And, congratulations!

    You're smart not to have an expensive wedding--- its a total waste of money.
    Love your "expat" videos-- watching "expat" videos is a great way to learn about a country. Thanks to you, I've learned so much about France! (I'm American, BTW.)

    • @Ambre-gk4oj
      @Ambre-gk4oj 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      MrDaydreamer1584 It's not a waste of money, some people prefer to have a huge wedding and to spend so much money because it's very important for them. Maybe for you but it's not the same for everyone.

    • @AparnaBL
      @AparnaBL 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ambre 1996 that depends ..on how do we feel important .

      I see so many working-class and middle-class people having really expensive weddings--- to the point of going into debt. Its almost as if they are trying to impress the rest of the world. Its stupid.
      I also suspect that-- at least here in America-- there is a "wedding industry", and that weddings are a big rip-off.

      @@MrDaydreamer1584 yap totaly agree
      There is also the "tradition" to made your parents paid for that, wich is just a remaining of medieval tradition, and its just a good thing for wedding planner
      A fresh couple must put that much money on basicaly anithing else than that

    Contragulations. Regarding the "Livret de Famille", it's nothing to sneer at. It is actually one of your most important piece of documenation. File it really securely, because when you will become a French citizen in four year's time, and when you will have children (if that's your wish) this will become one of the proof of French nationality to be issued a Carte d'Identité, either for yourself or your children. It is tremendously important.

    • @lauren8627

      Sneer? She looked excited about it.

    • @Juju3693
      @Juju3693 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Actually, the livret de famille can’t be used when you’re applying for a carte d’identité. Believe it or not, they are often full of mistakes... Birth certificates always tell the truth or it becomes the truth if the birth certificate says so... until you fix whatever mistake the certificate says through justice. ;)

    Hi,
    Small correction, in France, you can not "replace" your last name with your husband last name. You can use it, but it's not your legal name. So can your husband do.
    So if Mr. X marry Mrs. Y, he can say, "hey I Mr. X, or Mr. Y, or Mr. X-Y, or Mr. Y-X." (and he can change it every time he want). But for all legal stuff, like asking for a new passport, he stay Mr.X, and Mrs Y is only Mrs Y.

    • @ducotedechezlau4400
      @ducotedechezlau4400 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      GAJA Geek Right ! As a wife, I added my husband’s name to mine but the only legal last name is the birth name, from birth til death. The husband’s last name is called « nom d’usage ». That’s all.

      stillyoungmum True.. the same thing here in the Netherlands ( normal, our civic laws are based on the Code Napoléon) in my passport it is : .. maiden name ev.. ( épouse de) nom de mon mari) J'ai le droit de me servir du nom de mon mari, mais mon nom de fille reste le nom légal.

    So cool you explained all of this. I didn’t know there was so much to do to get married in France. My husband and I eloped and we live in the US. We decided on either Sunday or Monday that we would go get married on Friday (yes, just a few days later) and we went into the courthouse on Friday morning and got married. It was that fast and simple 😂

    Just to let you know that back in the 60' a foreign spouse just had to register the marriage at a French consulate if married abroad and one week later he or she would receive automatically a French passport, nationality being acquired through marriage. Times have changed... Bisous.

    I am French and I like your videos. I also got married abroad and that's when I discovered the particularity of the French law regarding the names of married couples. In France you can legally "use" your husband's name (it's called "nom d'usage"), but your actual name will always be your maiden name. It's like you can borrow it (it is legal) but it's never really yours. It is a strange legal thing that doesn't exist anywhere else as far as I know. The country where I got married allows legally changing names but because of the French particular law, I didn't have this option.

    • @elenapelayo1

      Same for Mexican citizens. I have a Mexican passport and my maiden name is on it with a very very small spot with my "spouse's" last name.

    I'm a french teacher for foreigners (prof de FLE) and your videos about culture shocks inspire me a lot !
    I got married in Normandy 2 years ago, ans I definitely agree with you : the ceremony in the mairie is too "legal". I also was shocked by the amount of references to children and family, especially because I'm still not sure if we will have some..
    Thanks for sharing all those interesting views about french culture.

    Sorry if this was already cleared, but it's not the birth certificate itself that expires. It is the validity of the specific copy you are given. The original is stored and you don't have it. These copies have an expiracy date to avoid identity theft or other unpleasant things I guess ?

    Just a little add to your statement about the application to the French citizenship once you are married to a Frenchman or Frenchwoman, it can indeed be done 5 years after the day of your wedding but as far as I know, you need to be living in France during all the process of the application and not abroad. Not 100% sure, best way to know is to check with the French consulate where you live. Once you're French, you can choose to live wherever you want to ;)
