New Jeep XJ Project!! Is It Worth Fixing?

- In this episode I’m going over my new project car a 2001 jeep Cherokee XJ. I picked this up from a buddy of mine. His family has owned this since brand new and kept records on everything they’ve ever had done to it. He told me he parked it in 2019 after he thought the transmission slipped and hasn’t moved it since.
What do you think we should do with this project?
Fix it
Scrap it
Sell it
Trade it
Or get it to pass inspection and just drive it
What would you do if this was your jeep?

XJ content makes the world go round; baybe.
I wish I could make more but I’m still waiting on a title for it
mine, 89 loredo 4x4, six months to fixx, 3500 invested, 132xxx miles, great truck!
I love these XJs, restored and parted out a few of them over the past couple of years
They are definitely cool vehicles to have
Low oil pressure at idle is normal it should go up as the rpm goes up 3 inches of lift with no SYE or t-case drop you will get drive line vibration lube the hood cable and latches with some white lithium grease get frame stiffness for the unibody pressure wash the crap out of the whole thing also did you check under the back seat to see if there was anything also the rear quarter panels will hold water if they are not rusted out already you have to pull the inside cover to see the water
Definitely change the transmission filter and fluid!! Especially the transmission filter.
Absolutely
I love my 2000. It runs amazing too. Never too hard in it and oil changes way before 5,000km.
You got ya self a Good Rig there, dude! 👍😉 any money spent on that one will be worthy! 👌
For sure!
0:07 Pro tip. Back the cherokee onto this type of trailer for 2 reasons. 1) So most of the weight is on the trailer axle & not your rear axle of the tow vehicle. & 2) so you dont "have" to strap the hood in fear of it flopping. That's how mine got delivered to Detroit from NJ for 550$ Bought 1k$ 98 4x4 NP242/4liter/UC/Tow/Tracloc/Ext Idle from the factory.
That rust on the frame above the rear passenger tire is pretty typical. Get it cut out and fixed asap though. Also, check both your floor pans under the carpet.
I need to actually take a look under the jeep. I’ve been slacking on doing anything with it
Check the water leaking on passenger side
I would hold on to it, fix it and drive it. But I'm biased. I have a 97 ZJ, 98 & 99 XJs and a 00 TJ, all with 4.0s. Lots of enthusiast communities online and IRL with a wealth of knowledge. Those things are just fun to drive stock or modded.
I think it’ll make a good first car for one of the kids in the future for sure
On the cable open the hood I put w40 and working fine
It’s worth it. I just got one
just in case you can't get the hood open........... take the headlights out and you can remove the two bolts that hold the latch
I was able to just pull the metal line that links the 2 side latches. I have a fix coming for it
If the trans does have shift issues change the shift modules first
Not a hard project and can change trans filter at same time.
AWESOME PROJECT!
I'd get it road worthy and drive it while you decide what you're going to do with it. That section of frame is going to need a good deal of work. Seeing it like is I would look at a frame stiffener kit front to back after you get the bad areas resectiond. The full kits aren't to expensive and would save a lot of work out not having to make templates.
If you don't need it for a daily driver, turn it into your hunting, fishing, camping, bug out rig.
I've got a 94 XJ that I rescued from the guy that had it loaded on a trailer heading to the wrecking yard for almost nothing. It's now nearly done after two years of work.
Enjoy the new rig.
I was looking in to those a little while back. I want to see what it would cost to have that section repaired so I can daily it for a little while or just make it around town and winter beater
@@NotSoMechanic Are you able to do metal work?
@@rickcooper9434 I’m not set up for it but my buddy Gavin does a little
Definitely worth fixing
I think so too
I have a 98 xj I’m fixing up right now.
The speedometer you just have to pop off it off and readjust it.
Or push it down in on the right hand side with your two finger
I read somewhere there’s a small gear that goes on the end of the speed sensor that should also be replaced so maybe I’ll try that as well!
@@NotSoMechanic pop off the whole speedometer take the stereo faceplate off start on screwing all screws. You're going to need some tape to make sure where it connect doesn't move.
@@NotSoMechanic no you don't need to do the gear trust me. It's easy.
@@NotSoMechanic it'll take thirty minutes.
@@NotSoMechanic I'm fat an I did it all buy myself. So I have faith in you brother. All it is in the back where the connection there's a clips that you got to replace but if you don't got the clip you could just put tape to keep it from moving. before you put everything back together turn it on and drive and make sure the speedometer is working. It'll be fixed.
Got a 99 123k miles holding on to it
Want it.
It’s honestly not that bad for a $600 jeep
Wow Very cheap 600 here in Baja Mexico that Jeep 2500
@@RogelioOblea-c1d I got pretty lucky with this
Man you got great deal.
It really was
@@NotSoMechanic Are you in Midwest by Any chance? I am from Illinois. Glendale heights
@@NotSoMechanic if your not to far I can come help you. All you got to do is pop off the speedometer readjusted pushing back in and drive around before you bolt all the screws back on and it'll work.
@@nathanmccumber8965 I appreciate it! I’ll see what I can do and if I can’t get it I’ll definitely be reaching out to local people to see if they wanna put some hands on some of my projects
@@NotSoMechanic I watch on video on how to do LED cluster light bulb then I followed step of taking everything off then I put back on. On back where it connects your gonna need to put tape on you'll see once it off
7:23 Also Pro Tip, Dont run/drive a cherokee with 10PSI oil pressure. Fix it.
My jeep has the same hood "trick" 😂
It’s annoying 😂 I put hood pins in it until I can get a new hood for it
Just curious how much you paid? It's amazing how guys are finding XJ's with body's this good for a decent price or crazy cheap. Everything I come across for cheap It's falling apart and if it's in good shape then it's $$$$$ 😂
I paid $600 but $300 of it was through Pokemon card sales 😂😂
600 is a steal!
It’s running?! You can work with it from there!
That’s exactly how I feel it runs pretty good and for the price I can’t complain at all
What I’m the world is a mud dobber
Mud daubers are like wasps but they make dirt/mud nests
AWESOME PROJECT!
