I ate a number of radiators with that fan clutch. Even with Brown Dog solid mounts (that make the whole Jeep rattle). It's a uni-Jeep, it'll twist. :) Eventually swapped in a Taurus fan, which keeps it ice cold on the trail, but less cold wooding it on mountain climbs. XJ life...
@@mikes4x4garage stock is best. Don't mess with it. My 4.7 stroker cools best with stock everything, I've tried it all. Hood vents and fan on a switch only mod that made a positive difference in all driving conditions. Going all electric is great on trails but will be a desaster on mountain passes.
I love the dixie cup paint job! Also, are you running your stock Dana 30s on 35s? Or is that a different front axle? I would love to run 35s on my XJ but I'm afraid that the Dana 30 will not be happy with it.
Beers were cracked! Hell yeah brother keep up the good work! I’m on my way to the steel store to buy some HREW to fab up the rear bumper. Gotta stay busy and we’ll hydrated. Happy 4th!
Nice, still surprised you're much over 210 at highway speeds, sometimes those bigger clutches demand more than they give. Might be worth slapping in a cheapie trans mount too if it's moving that much generally it's both. When I had a tcase drop kit in back when i was rednecking my xj the fan used to clip the ac lines lol
Hey man great video! I also really like your content. Where did you take the head to get checked/resurfaced? I am about to replace the head gasket on my 1999 TJ and freeze plugs while im in there but I also want to take it in to get checked for some additional piece of mind.
Ive had those large clutches wipe out radiators before. Sometimes they are just too close to the radiator i think when they spool up or lock up they move forward slightly also if theres body flex etc.. last one i saw wipe out a radiator had brown dog motor mounts on it so it wasnt a mount issue. If i were to install one id find a way to shave stuff down a little to gain more room like shave the mount flange down a little and maybe bits off the front etc.. i run electric fans on our cherokees or the stock clutch on stock setups but that big clutch does do more im just real careful about it i havent installed one for a while since seeing failures on a rig i had then a few others. You can also get rid of the clutch and mount the fan solid with a spacer/adapter but i prefer the clutch for a few reasons. Many years ago i put a big clutch on my cherokee then my wifes and it wiped out her radiator and not mine and there was the smallest amount of space difference hers was only just slightly closer maybe an 1/8th inch and i believe at the time i found the clutch moves forward as it locks up. So just be careful, it also depends on radiator thickness. Your mounts definitely didn't help but im not sure that was the problem i would keep an eye on it or take a little time to create some extra space.
I’m not a fan of the ZJ fan clutch. It’s crazy loud and it actually killed my gas mileage and seat of my pants horsepower. It would barely touch the radiator with the iron man poly mounts. I ended up putting a brand new XJ clutch in and it did great for cooling.
yeah that might have to do a head gasket some time soon cause in my lj i notice alot of air bubbles and it kinda smells.....like combustion not full on like you ti where i was getting smoke, but yeah ill need to see since it could just be the radiator flush stuff im using along with air bubbles in the coolant system but we'll see, either way i wouldn't be too mad at her she has 213k miles and i beat on and bang limiter.....not good for the motor but very good for the soul 😆😆' ALSO what wheels are you running, are they the level 8 bully pro's ?
As a former xj owner I would of upgraded that radiator to the csf 3 core and replace the cap with an oem mopar cap. Actually the more oem cooling parts you replace on that thing, the better. Oh these are super simple! Thankfully I’ve done them before. New engines however, scary…
Hey Mike how does that jeep ride on the highway with those big tires on? Can you keep up with traffic on highways with some incline?
