It's absolutely _contemptible_ what Valve allowed to happen to Half-Life (aside from approving this remake, of course). They cancelled Half-Life 3 without ever producing anything more than a _single_ piece of concept art and some mumblings about there possibly being a deaf NPC (although they never actually _admitted_ they'd cancelled it, they just stopped saying anything and hoped we'd forget it) because _they couldn't be fucked making it any more,_ feeling it was easier to just sit on their asses and rake in money from Steam and cosmetics sales in TF2 and Dota 2. One of the most anticipated games ever, the conclusion to one of the most-revolutionary series in the history of the gaming medium, and they just left it sitting on a horrific cliffhanger because they _stopped caring._ They even allowed that piece of worthless asset-flip garbage 'Hunt Down the Freeman' to be released with their tacit approval. Valve may not being a vilest publisher out there by a long shot, but they're easily the _laziest_ and, in a way, the most _pathetic._

It better considering this game has been in production longer than any AAA title. They started this mod back in 2004. They partially released the game unfinished in 2012 and here it is 2019 a year after this trailer and Xen still isn't in game.

@Aditya Sinha yes, it was absolutely amazing in 1998. That nostalgic feel still keeps it good, too. It was just that xen was rather bleak and didn’t have the same feel as the rest of the levels.

Of course I did! I have it on my Steam library for over a year and I played it till the end. It's just that the Xen portion of it is graphically superior to any other area of the game to the point of looking like it wasn't made on the Source engine.
They legit made it beautiful, if the wildlife wasn't so aggressive, it wouldn't be so bad to live in if you had to.
Edit: Or at least it would be very habitable, the gravity would still be weird tho lol.

Just finished playing a week ago. Xen was unique, beautiful, the music really stands out, gonarch was scary as f***. Also sometimes i would just walk aroun and look at the beautiful scenery. What a great experience.

@@Salomon_G Yeah! HL:Alyx could be a proof of concept game and the final episode of HL2. Than they should release HL3 in the future. Both on PC and VR. I think VR, if used correctly could revolutionize game industry just like the 3D graphic cards did before. But if that gonnan happend we need good games for the hardware.

This looks like an actual ecosystem with its distinct fauna and flora, creatures that actually adapted living in this border world. It's amazing how much care and detail went into this.

This actually looks like a real alien world with its own ecosystem and not a series of floating platforms shaped to sort‑of resemble an alien‑ish world.

I’ve been always wondering how the hell it takes years to create Xen, but when I started playing I realized how amazingly beautiful and detailed it is and it must be after a lot of hard work
Black Mesa Xen is like a whole new game. They had to come up with most of the map design from scratch. I'm proud of what they made.

@@probmaxx геймплей и звук в Black Mesa не всегда дотягивают до оригинала. ИИ морпехов не такой интересный - они просто бегут и очень метко стреляют, а не пользуются укрытиями. ИИ морпехов был взят с комбайнов из HL2 и заточен в первую очередь под то, чтобы смачно получать в морду из грави пушки. Но в Black Mesa нет грави пушки, поэтому ИИ морпехов там не интересный.
В плане дизайна уровней, моделей и графония всё зашибись. Xen в Black Mesa точняком будет намного лучше оригинального, потому что в оригинале он был по большей части отстойным.

I genuinely forgot this was still in the source engine. I know we're able to use Source 2 now so that's nice, but again, it's still built on source, which is built on GoldSrc, which is built on the Quake engine. This game probably still had code in it from Quake. That's just crazy to me.

But don't forget Boreal Alyph, it is another HL3 Fan Game which uses source engine on creating the game and look on their latest update (th-cam.com/video/_GyBOKMvp9w/w-d-xo.html) which they modifies the engine which will be updated like on the latest games.
Source has been called "the tower of duct tape". For instance, that really cool singularity thing in Episode 1? Yeah... allegedly if it isn't in those EXACT coordinates in 3d space, it hard crashes. You literally have to build the map around it.
Honestly I just want to play some kind of decent conclusion.

It's hard to believe it's running on a Source Engine. Of course I know some modifications had to be made, but it only shows that the Source Engine is still extremely capable and the work that Black Mesa creators have done is just mind-blowing!

@@amirmuzakkir3450 Titanfall uses a ridiculously modified version of Source, though, to the point that it can't even really be called Source anymore.
Here's what I observed. Why it looks good is really because of the art direction that went in it. I just finished black mesa for the first time and played in the the lowest quality possible in the settings YET it still looks AMAZING.
The artists that designed how the levels were layed out felt like a well composed painting where your eyes would flow in the right direction. The use of color theory is present too, the first chapters of xen mostly consists of different shades of blue, magentas, and oranges. That pallete usually conveys a "Dream-like, Mysterious, and safe" vibe which is definitely the vibe you get when playing through the levels. The "Safe" parts comes from the fact that what most lives in the first chapters are basically "wild animals" of the place in which they live there "Safely". As the game progeress to interloper, the blues and cyans present of the xen chapters are completry gone and instead it mostly consisted of dark green, and reds like how the colors looked in the original half life xen. Giving it a very "dangerous" feel while also feeling natural to live in.
They were very creative with making the orange crystals and alien plants with lights basically a giant "Red Marker" that makes your eyes focus your attention to them to tell you where you're supposed to go too. It's like Left 4 dead 1's design philosophy with how Valve made the players go in the right direction most of the time is make the areas you're not supposed to go to be dark and the areas you should go to progress will be completely lit up by light. The "dark" parts in this case of black mesa are the dominant blues where adding a very bright complimentary color to it like orange will make it very obvious you're supposed to go there. This is a very common thing for art designers to do and man writing this message really makes me want to make a Video Essay about Black Mesa Xen's Art Direction.
Basically, art direction is really what makes xen awesome, Not the graphics. Xen still looks super jaw dropping when I played it in the lowest settings.
This trailer is awesome. Not only is the music very well synced to events in the video but sounds (like the shotgun firing and reloading) are integrated in the music.

No it shouldn't, the time these guys are taking on this remake the game by time its released the graphics are already dated. This is a game that they started making in 2004. Then 8 years later after one missed launch date they launched two years after missed launched the incomplete game and would do the xen levels later. here it is 7 years later since launch and Xen still is not in game and this trailer just like their 2010 launch trailer was nothing but a lie.

@@Reonu, stupid comment? I wouldn't go so far to call it stupid. Stupid is trying to defend BMS when its took them this long to complete a game that had everything they needed but the models. They didn't have to come up with a story as the story was there. They didn't have to come up with characters as the characters were there. They didn't have to come up with weapons as the weapons were there. They didn't have to come up with a setting as the setting was there.
Quite literally all they had to do was create new modern models of what already existed but yet it took them this long to get it released. This mod was started back in 2004 after the release of Half Life 2. This game has taken so long to come out most people that were crazy for it and couldnt wait for it to come out lost interest in it back around 2010 after 6 years of development. Then more lost interest after the two release dates presented that came and went with nothing. Then more moved on after the game released finally but without xen and here we are now 7 years since the game initially launched and xen is finally coming out. That is sad cause there are other independent mod teams that are making a lot more than this team has in a fraction of the time and the funny thing is the teams I know of don't even have 1/4 of the team members that this team has.
So if you want to defend BMS then by all means defend them. There is no reason to be a child and resort to petty insults by saying comments are stupid especially a comment that was made 3 months ago.
I remember when this trailer was revealed, it was like yesterday, but it was almost 3 years ago.
It appears Xen presented a whole new set of challenges for the devs. It's looking fantastic!

New xen looks like a habitable place, rather than rocks everywhere, is good.
Which is a shame, because the desolate atmosphere really gave Xen an alien feel to its environment. However, far from mad because this looks like an actual living ecosystem.
It looks great but I liked the feeling of desolation, hostility and isolation. It was also a little more realistic feeling, whereas having plant matter and creatures all over is a bit too fantasy for me.
@@mythologue kinda what I thought as well, but then again Xen isnt your run of the mill inhabitable realm; we never had any say over its rules, valve/crowbar collective did and for what they did its splendid work.
Still gonna miss the desolate landscape.

Xen in Black Mesa was so beautiful that I felt bad whenever I used projectile-based weapons, felt like I was littering in a delicate biome

It's incredible how far Crowbar Collective have pushed both the Source engine, and DirectX 9 to produce these results. Fantastic.
In fact I think that the customized version of the Source Engine that is used by CC now supports DirectX 11

The Soundtrack is one of the main parts which make the atmosphere what it is, on top of this, the vibrant colours and incredible sound design for the Maps and NPCs brings it up further; the new NPCs like underwater Barnacles, H.E.V Zombies and different Breeds of Houndeye’s also gives the world more life, Xen was slightly bare before, seeing new enemies is refreshing and also interesting, which catches you off guard too. I honestly believe this is a really good predecessor to Half-Life and holds up well on Source 2. I give it a high rating and don’t see many improvements, I would personally love a sort of, ‘Non-HD’ Textures pack where they’d allow you to either, use the older Black Mesa textures OR use textures which are remakes of the original Valve ones.

I'm so glad this team really took their time to make sure everything was perfect. They originally set a release date in 2009, but we didn't get a mostly finished product until what? 2014 or so? Even then, they continued to update and update time and time again. Then they were able to make it to steam in which we got to see Xen, and now, we get to see a truly finished game. It only took them about 11+ years to do it, but god damn is it worth it. I hope they eventually do Operation: Black Mesa and Guard Duty. (Opposing Force and Blue Shift remasters)
Having just replayed through HL1 and Black Mesa, I have to give massive props to all involved for what you have done with Xen.
HL1 is an amazing game, Xen does however feel flat and for a lack of better words, unfinished.
Black Mesa did a phenomenal job with Xen, and while it is significantly longer, it does so much with atmosphere, set pieces, enemies, and of course the music (Joel did such a great job with the music) that it is my favourite part of the game.

I thought someone ought to say - the amount of effort, tears, sweat, passion and so much that has gone into this creation is mind-blowing. When one has an attention to detail, and you see what these people have actually achieved, it is honestly quite remarkable. The very details we take for granted that must take pain staking hours. I honestly wish this team the very best of luck for their future they deserve the very best from life. Well done for such a masterpiece.

Project Borealis has talents from across the industry and did you even see the new update vlog? It looks better than Black Mesa and still has the Half Life feel to it. Even their soundtrack is superb. They will even release a demo for the game to show everyone that it feels like half life and what you can excpect from the Project Borealis. And the best thing about the demo? Its ravenholm with snow. So shut up you misinformed idiot

Let's be honest, the original Xen level were pretty bad, so I think its great that the team allow themselves enough freedom to better the levels. They've done an excellent job so far.
They weren't bad through and through, they had many redeeming qualities, but they were just so rushed and it was over before you could get into it.
it's hard to do organic when you have a gpu budget, it had to run on most PCs, polygons where cut, things got blocky/edgy.

Sega went the traditional route of asking a third party studio who had been around for a while in the industry for stuff like porting Sonic 1 to GBA (which ended horribly) or making the successor to their legendary 16 bit series (AKA the half baked Sonic 4). Fans later did a superior port and had been making fan games that play better than Sonic 4 for many years, Sega eventually gave some a chance to make something official.

Well, It was worth 6 years of waiting. Black Mesa brings me back to 2001, when i played original Half-life for the first time. It was something beyond my imagination. Today Crowbar Collective made great re-make of original HL, with a lot of effort and a lot of new things. I can not even call it re-make, it is something new, imaginative, fresh and interesting. God, I am so glad, i experienced this game when XEN came out. It was a blast.
