@@d415ym1rabel Awesome! Thank you! I'm super intimidated by road bikes, so I currently ride a cute hybrid with a nice cruiser-like frame. But, I take that thing everywhere. So I'm comfortable riding on the road. I just feel so vulnerable on a road bike. But I also feel like they're just so awkward 😅 Granted, I was not properly fitted onto the one I tested 😆
Yup what someone said here, take the Hudson greenway all the way up! Usually, you’ll just have to stop for pedestrians. But it’s one of my favorite rides especially on easy days. The views are great!
Also, I live in Brooklyn now and I grew up by Tenafly, NJ (one of the towns you end up in on 9W)…if you keep going up, you end up at Piermont NY. Crazy hills but a good stop for coffee/lunch as it’s next to the water. One of my favorite fondo rides from BK and back.
Your quickest route to George Washington Bridge from southern Manhattan would be to use the West Side Highway bike lane which takes you as far as W 158th Street in Washington Heights
Was gonna say this. It's not perfect, rs downtown but it's definitely better than all the lights and pedestrians/drivers with marginal awareness of the ny grid bikelanes.
There's a cool gravel riding park in outer Brooklyn called Shirley Chisholm State Park. You can ride the Shore Road Parkway and then the Jamaica Bay Greenway there, but from Williamsburg it's a lot shorter just to go via streets. There are a lot fewer bike lanes in the outer part of the borough, though.
Great to see you ride up 9W. If you go further north you can hit Bear Mountain and also the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. The Village of Piermont by the Cuomo/Tappan Zee Bridge is also a VERY friendly destination for cyclists with numerous pubs, pizza places and unbelievable views of the Hudson River.
I agree about using bikes in a city. Sandra and always do a bike tour on our first day in a new city. Meet interesting people and guides are always friendly.
For bike rental I recommend checking Spinlister. Hired one for a day to do this ride in the spring as RCC was booked out, and was less than half the $$.
Nice ride! Fun fact: The lower deck of the George Washington Bridge was originally meant to have train tracks (much like the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges). This never came to pass and the lower deck was used for vehicle traffic. The Verrazzano Bridge also has 2 decks for cars and trucks. Thanks for the video!
@@stevek8829 They did indeed think of it. You just don't add another level to a bridge without designing it to handle the load in the first place. In fact, the NY/NJ Port Authority's own web site on the history of the bridge says the following "Ammann's design, bold and foresighted, was an engineering tour de force, with an extraordinary 3,500-foot center span suspended between two 570-foot steel towers, and the strength to carry two levels of roadway or rail."
@@randorecumbent ok that makes sense. I looked it up an hour ago and it was added in 61. I thought I remembered it later in sixties. The place is the worst traffic, as soon as one jam ends construction begins. Glad I haven't seen it in years. Thanks for the correct information.
Though I’ve ridden lots in NYC, I haven’t yet gotten the courage to ride in London. I wholeheartedly agree that cycling is the best way to take in cities. I’d recommend cycling in many other US cities as well. Many are less frenetic than NYC.
Hello! Thanks so much for this series of videos. I've been a NY biker since the 1990s and you've hit all the highlights: 9W, River Road, Central Park, Prospect Park, the ride up to Tarrytown (near where I used to live when my kids were in school.) Thanks also for turning me on to Lake Shoes. My bunions are happier! The next time you're in town, please ride with me! I will show you my daily commute to work from Brooklyn.
Daisy looks great, guuuurl, I don't know what your doing, but keep doing it!! NYC is a blast to ride in, my daughter went to The Pratt Institute for her grad degree, beautiful campus there in Williamsburg, if you all roll over to Bushwick, there is a cute bar called AllNite Skate, a 80s themed bar, centered around roller skating, super cute. I'm loving the videos of your trip!
Great video! I used to do part of that ride from the Upper West Side 3-4 days a week. Definitely a longer ride from Williamsburg. Nice work! Moved to San Francisco 4 years ago, and the riding options here are ridiculous, plus year-round riding given the weather. But, I still miss New York when I see videos like this. Anyway, off for a ride...
For the Northeast Megapolis (DC, Philly, NYC, Boston), Washington DC really stands out for having the city that has the best riding. Rock Creek Park is amazing for riding in the city. You have great roads in Maryland that are in riding distance from the heart of DC. The C&O trail is an amazing gravel towpath that you can link to other roads or enjoy on its own. Virginia next door has great riding as well. I know NYC is a special city, but when it comes to a big urban area on the east coast with good cycling, you can’t beat DC. Come visit or let me know if you’d ever like some GPS files!
Totally agree that discovering a city is best on a bike or walking. San Fran is great for that with bike paths all around the bay and can take bikes on the ferries. Melbourne’s (Aus) bayside suburbs are great on a bike too.
Man, you could’ve stayed on 9W, heading northbound, and ended up in Piermont, where they have a pretty decent bike shop, cafe’s and restaurants. Too bad I relocated to Florida…. I miss 9W a ton! Remember… don’t ride on the sidewalks! Lol
Nice man! That's the route most people do in the weekdays during the AM. Coming from Williamsburg (more toward Greenpoint) the quickest way to the GW is either up over the Queensboro, cut through Central Park and get over to the west side's Hudson River Greenway. Otherwise, if you're close to the Williamsburg Bridge, most people take that straight across Manhattan via Delancey and then after a quick right on Bowery, Prince Street the rest of the way. From there, there's a few local 'cut throughs' like going up Riverside Drive to the GW, but no matter what way you slice it, it's still about 25k / 16 miles to the bridge. If you want to check out any city racing, there's the Lucarelli & Castaldi Cup in Prospect Park at 6 AM this Saturday. Cat 1, 2, 3 then 3-4, and then 5-Novice. And yeah, the "ebike" thing - it's fucking insane here now 😂
Omg I did this ride so many times Back in the day. Legit NYC ride Francis and Daisy. How about a late night lap of Central Park- if you go fast enough you won’t get mugged! Those were the days, back in the 90’s
Now that’s NYC riding. Good work. I hired a cannondale road bike and did laps of Central Park. I was broken after it! Zipping thru traffic was awesome though, felt like I was in Premium Rush!
If you come to states during the summer, the coolest temperatures are in San Francisco. Everywhere else is hot and humid or hot and dry in the southwest.
You have to come back and ride the GWB again! The Powers That Be have renovated the North Outer Roadway for peds and cyclists and it’s now WAY nicer than the old cycling path over the bridge. The cycle path you took to New Jersey is now closed while they renovate that one, also. And you HAVE to ride to the Runcible Spoon in Nyack. A cyclist destination mainstay for New Yorkers!
Yes here in the us we have those electric speeders…going 40 in a 25 when your ridding a regular bike in 33 degrees centigrade and trying to just go…. They fly by from out of no where. I was observing a person near 80 years old flying down the street enjoying herself clutching the handlebar’s with a huge electric bike that was so big you had to look twice to see if a person was on it…. The joy of biking and the freedom to go faster than cars in the city ….
Brilliant vlog, just subbed. We have just got back from NY. We've been a few times before but took our Bromptons this time. Great experience riding your own bikes through the city and, I've gotta say, far safer than riding London, Paris or similar. I don't doubt we'll be back soon so we'll try this route. Take care and happy cycling.
Thanks for coming to ride in my city. Yes it's terribly dangers to ride here in the city. Cyclist we do enjoy riding 9W as the road is very hilly and long. I'm happy that New York is one of your favorite cities on 🌎.
I tried this trail and almost died! lol Riding around NYC is not bad at all. However, once I crossed GWB and hit the beginning of the Palisades trail, whoa, that was a different experience! THE HILLS. I would imagine that the weather played a significant role -- it was a hot and hazy 100+ degrees -- making it even more grueling. However, even on a pleasant day I believe this trail will give intermediate/advanced beginners, such as myself, a proper beating.
E-bikes greater than class 1 used to be illegal in NYC but as of the end of 2020 up to class 3 is allowed. Plenty of faster ones of course that people have removed limiters from.
Bro, hit up bear mountain. It’s a bit more north but the views are worth it. You can ride from the piermont bike shop if it’s too far from the city, but it’s worth a ride. 5k feet of climbing. Just a warning.
Welcome to New York, buddy! So cool to see you on the same streets I’ve been on 100 times. To get out of the traffic you got a ride on the outskirts on the Hudson River Greenway. Pass the piers. A lot of pedestrian traffic on foot and scooters but get you away from the taxis.
Hey Francis, if you’re having trouble sleeping, go to CVS and find something called melatonin. You don’t need a prescription. It’s a natural sleep hormone, but only use it if you need to sleep.
Great to hear you guys are enjoying NYC. Next time you go over the Pulaski Bridge from Brooklyn into Long Island City, stop by a cafe called Sweet Leaf. The cafe is at the bottom of the bridge across the street. Order the Voodoo child, it's rocket fuel (iced Vietnamese coffee).

Good on you Francis for doing, more or less, THE NYC ride. If you left early no reason not to take the Hudson Greenway most of the way up from lower Manhattan. Or not...One bone to pick; why no footage of the infamous hill on River Road (called by some Sheriff's Hill as it ends at the police station you mention)? Not so nice on a hot day I grant you, but you know we watch these things to see suffering, right? Anyway, salute from a NYC bike rider who doesn't want to be seen on video climbing that hill either!

Surprised you didn't take Riverside drive up and down Manhattan. The best through streets I think is 76 or 79th Street between Central Park or you can cut across on canal Street if you don't care for life but it's actually the quickest there's no official bike lane just Savage commuters 😆😂

You should ride on the other side of our country SPECIFICALLY San Diego, California beautiful weather over here just saying and great views to the coast.
Be very careful of the delivery folks on motorized scooters/bikes...I've been off the bike for almost 2 months after avoiding one of them on the West Side Greenway (just north of the GW Bridge on the Manhattan side), crashing into a wall, and breaking my elbow.
