Trying to FIX 3x 1970s Pull Cord Talking Toys

  • Hi, in this 'trying to fix' video I attempt to fix 3 talking toys from the 1970s, a Womble, Rupert the Bear and Mickey Mouse.
These pull cord toys were made in the UK by Burbank Toys. The voice box inside them is a nice little piece of engineering which appeared in numerous talking toys from that era.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
    Spoiler Alert....
Rupert is now back home with the original owner where he belongs :-)
    Many thanks, Vince.

Thank you so much for this! I was so happy to find this video. I have a Rupert Bear (also given to me circa 1974). His voice box stopped working years ago. I didn’t think he could be fixed and am thrilled to see that it is possible for him to be revived. Interestingly, one of his boots also came loose and my parents possibly threw it away. I bought some felt and managed to create two new ones and sew them back on.

There is something you can do about the stitches being visible. Instead of just sewing it shut with a running or whip stitch, use a ladder stitch. It pulls the raw edges in and the more you pull on the thread the less you see. Wonderful way to restore old toys when you need to sew something. I restore rubber face dolls like Rushton/Gund/Knickerbocker/MyToy/etc and I use a ladder stitch to sew them shut (sometimes they get floppy so I like to restuff them so they can hold their shape better) very useful when restoring old stuffed toys. I'd suggest looking up a video on how to do it, it's very simple to do.

Wow Vince, this is a great one! I never knew exactly the same toys like this when I was a kid, but it is great to see you fixing these things up. You know, I love mechanical and quite simple things like this and they show how things don't need to be electronic or battery operated to be fun and to make them talk. When I was a kid, some kids at school had a toy that, when the cord was pulled, made animal sounds depending on a movable pointer that could be pointed towards animals that were shown on the toy. And I also think there was something like a clock toy that, depending on the position of the hands, said things like "It's time to wake up" or "it's time to put the toys away" and things like that. Oh and my sister used to have a talking/singing doll; it was battery operated, but still used the system with the record and the diaphragm to amplify the sound, but I remember it included some interchangable records you could use to let the toy say (or sing) other things. Thank you very much for this Vince, it brings back great memories!

You really do put your heart and soul into these fixes Vince, I am full of admiration for your work :) You're actually starting to surpass GadgetUK164 for attention to detail, and that takes some doing!
For taping stuff like this together amalgamating tape used to render satellite dish LNB plugs watertight may be a better solution. It's designed to last for decades in harsh conditions and forms a very tight bond around anything its stretched over.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Haha, don't worry I am sure one of my fixes will go disastrously wrong soon....Chris has nothing to worry about :-)
Amalgamating tape would be perfect for this, I used to use it and sell it. I think I have still have some. Yes, stretch it and overlap by 50% and it all rubberises together. That is a great solution for these voice boxes. Well done :-)

Very nice fix of these dolls. I remember my sister having a different version of this, it was a girl that could sing and talk, but as I remember correctly it was battery operated and had a hatch under her shirt where you could change the records. Still have my Orinocho with scarf and hat from mid 70s. Doesn't talk but that 'Let's Womble up your toys after you've finished playing' line sent chills up my spine as I haven't heard that for over 40 years! There were at least 3 variations of him. Orinocho, uncle Bulgaria and Tomsk. Same voice box in each so I think they used a voice actor which is why none sound like Bernard Cribbins. My Andy Pandy works perfectly as does my Dr Doolittle. Unfortunately I also had a Rupert, Busby and a Noddy but they disappeared in a move years ago. I could have sworn my Rupert said "PC Growler" and not Constable though!

Vince, When you need to stitch stuffed toys up again,
step 1 The stitch should start from the inside or "underside" of one side and then place the needle over to the other side you are joining at the top to go through to the underside.
step 2 Stitch back to the other under side and tensioning the stitches so that all previous stitches disappear and then continue where each stitch joins underside to underside and outside to outside
step 3 gently tension stitches every now and then ensuring they all disappear repeat step one to three until the hole and stitching is concealed.
FINAL STEP stitching from underneath to the other side underneath do a knot stitch a few times.

you did brilliantly. Rupert always had those victorian boots in the annuals so they probably made them to look more like those than shoes. I agree the hands are a it creepy LOL. Mickey may have had kapok as that was a popular toy stuffing back in the 60s and was rather an odd mixture of colours . Foam filling seems to have been mid 70s onwards. Orinoco was the womble with the red scalf and he had a floppy red hat too. Dont know whether the toy did . The wombles had a few records and appeared on Top of the pops back then as well.

The Womble could be Tomsk, as I'm sure that Orinoco had a red scarf and brown hat, it's definitely not Wellington, Tobermory or Madam Cholait, and as you said it's not Great Uncle Bulgaria. Noow my knowledge of the Wombles' names has dried up lol I even had a Womble LP lol Another good video Vince! I agree it would be nice if Bev had Rupert back again.

@mymatevince Vince , my aunt gave me a crash course on using a sewing machine and it’s not that difficult once you know how to set it up. I know Rupert has gone home now but next time you get something similar I’d encourage you to give it a go. I reupholstered all my car seats in my old classic Alfasud in red leather and put silver piping in too. Trick is to do everything inside out . Loving the variety in your content. Keep it coming

Mickey looks more like Sonic lol. The red bands under his face mayhave held the foam in place.
My heart sank when you were gutting the womble...so sad. I think the womble would sound better if you replaced the govenor pads. It sounds too fast and then too slow near the end, so tension is probably right but govenor not quite working.
    Nice fix on the boots.
I think replacing the stuffing is the right way to go.
Great (almost restoration) repairs on all 3.

Vince, if you ever do these again, maybe you could use a marker of some kind and leave marks on the spring in a line? That way, if it uncoils you'll be able to use those as guides to coil the spring properly much easier.
