  • My first try at using baking soda for a blast media. This is nothing special, just regular baking soda that I got at Sam's Club. I think it worked OK for what I wanted to do., which was removal of the surface rust and grime.

This was a great video demonstrating the limitations of soda blasting. Soda blasting is meant more for delicate parts, like soft metals. Works great for carburetors, but that cast metal definitely needed a more aggressive grit like sand or alum oxide, etc.

Yeah. I just bought a sand blaster. Iv never used one. But I have a carb I want to get looking good. Baking soda looks like it will work perfect.

Only problem is sand and grits will imbed in the surface to later cause problems. Soda can be washed out with warm water. Looks like a gear housing with oil filling. Would hate to take that chance.

How many kilograms of soda did you use in this one sitting?

This obviously works fairly well. Unfortunately, for folks like myself, it just doesn't do enough. I can't afford a separate rig for one operation. It needs to be able to handle more than just soda, more versatility is desired sand, beads, walnut shells would be great.

Sysiphistication not sure if you're still looking. Harbor freight has a 50lb capacity media blaster. For like 30 bucks. You just hook an air hose to it. It'll blast baking soda, sand, aluminum oxide, glass beads, etc.

If you could just stay in one spot long enough to actually see if the rust comes off...that would be great.

I'm wondering wouldn't this process be better suited to delicate materials, I mean what you cleaned probably could have been done using a parts washer couldn't it?But for delicate substances like aluminum or perhaps copper or plastics this process looks good.

At 3:20 you can see the metal clean up/rust removed. To me this suggest that the other part of video is just cleaning the dirty yellow paint
