Odin Makes: the Mandalorian's Beskar spear as seen in Disney's The Mandalorian

  • Another Star Wars prop! From my favorite Star Wars show! (there have been a few over the years...)
    In this video I show my full process for figuring out how to build a PVC Beskar spear, without the use of my big power tools- I only use a rotary tool (and a heat gun) that's it! Is it easy? Kinda is- it just took a little more time.

      But graphite powder does work incredibly well.

    • @OdinMakes
      @OdinMakes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Belt sanders are great! Grab a low cost one, if the material you are working with is softer (not steel, or oak) than a lower cost budget sander will get you going for a while. This is pretty much Adam Savage's advice, and I like it.
      If you are in the states, look for a Harbor Freight Tools near you. The belt on my Ryobi sander is from HFT, and the sander is actually second-hand!
      That is also an idea- look for a pawn shop! They have tools too.

    I like your tip for getting PVC to be more rigid at 6:32 : using something inside it to strengthen it! I used a smaller length of PVC wrapped in tape every foot or so to do just that when I made my "Rey's Staff" from Star Wars: The Force Awakens! I'm sure wood would have worked better but the PVC was good enough and didn't add much weight.

    • @OdinMakes
      @OdinMakes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh nice! The wood did add a little weight, but over all the spear just has a satisfying heft to it now. It's still light enough to carry around all day.

      I enjoyed all the Harryhausen/ Sinbad movies, and I did get to see the Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger in the theaters, which is the one I was thinking of! That one had the clockwork minotaur in it.
      On set, the Minotaur was played by Kevin Peter Hall, who was the Predator later. For the most part, he was all stop motion by Harryhausen...

    Great video as usual Odin! How about trying out one of the mage staffs from Skyrim. Think the same concept would work. Much more ornate though.

    You can use a pipe cutter to cut PVC straight. The blade will cut right through the plastic and cut it straight.

    When I'm creating a picture with a character that has clothing with a lot of detail that is time-consuming and a pain to draw, I find myself improvising and inventing techniques on the fly to make things go much faster, easier, and to be able to use that template numerous times for later projects.
    It's cool to see a creator I admire have the same mind-set. :0)

    Nice work Odin. A possible idea for a future project what about like your mechagodzilla suit you do one for a big Daddy from Bioshock specifically the Mr Bubbles variant where he has the domed helmet and the multiple port holes. I'm thinking even going with a full functioning drill that rotates and various LEDs for the helmet such as red green and yellow.
