  • SAWSQUATCH! 10-1/4" Worm Drive Circular Saw
    If you cut 4x and larger lumber, the Skilsaw 10-1/4 in Worm Drive Circular Saw is either already in your arsenal or it is on the want list. If you are building large projects and are sandwiching multiple 2x's, a single 4x or even 6x, this saw will power through allowing you to make fewer cuts. A 4x can be cut clean in one pass along with stacked 2x lumber or laminate beams. The motor on this worm drive saw is a 15-Amp dual field motor designed specifically for the larger 10-1/4" saw. It is designed to keep the motor cool under high load while providing the power needed for large, long cuts. With all of its magnesium parts, the saw weighs in at 16.5 pounds and thankfully includes a rafter hook.
    Features & Specs
    • cut 4x clean a single pass
    • 15 amp Dual-Field motor

    Josh, went to Lowes last week and bought a saw like that. Used it to cut some 2 by 10 boards. I built 5 riser steps for my porch. I really like the quality of the saw. I did some horrible cuts at first. But figured out what I did wrong. I was really happy the steps turned out so good.

    If you are doing big timbers regularly, just get the Makita 16-5/16" 5402NA circular saw and be done with it. 6.25" cut depth at 90°.

      bwillan,
      We run the Makita when we have to but it is under powered and heavy so it's not my favorite saw and definitely for every day use

      Essential Mountain Homesteading it's not easy, I contact skilsaw and chervon and they never come back with a answer. I would love to make a few video and review to on my Instagram page.

    We had a hard time cutting full depth with this saw. The blade would flex out of square. Returned the saw for refund. Definitely interested in trying skills new 16 inch saw .

      I'm having this problem right now. Cutting green cypress for a timer frame pavilion. On an angle cut, I found that despite a plumb entry cut, the exit was as much as 1/4" off plumb. Slower cuts made the wood smoke, but did not change the exit angle deviation. I found that I could minimize the problem by not using the black handle. Pushing down on the red handle maximizes contact with the wider part of the base. Using the black handle, screwed in on the left side, was causing me to put left leaning pressure on the narrow part of the base as the saw exited the wood, and tgat accounted for most of the deviation. But not all of it. Skil has some work to do on this saw.

    I would have gone with the 16" Skillsaw for timbers that size.

    So does a worm drive have advantages over a regular standard Skilsaw? Is it just user preference? That particular one is a nice big saw, that's handy. Doubt I'd never need one but I do love to buy tools lol

      Worm drive saws have better power delivery by design and also better cross reach when cutting do to handle placement. But also have a higher tendency to kick back.

    Its called a chainsaw, I have one that will cut perfect 90's up to 12" thick. My dad machined a small table for the bar. Even free cutting it with a chainsaw and cleaning up the edge will give you a better cut than a skilsaw, they never line up perfectly. Just saying there are better ways to cut bigger timbers. I thought about buying one of these saws for about 3 seconds and realized I already had it perfected..

    I saw (no pun intended) one if these in a pawn shop the other day. It was marked at $329

      @EssentialMountainHomesteading  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's not a bad deal. But I I've only used my saw twice in the last few years. It's hard to tie up 300.00 if it only gets used every once and a while

      @@EssentialMountainHomesteading ok. Thank you. I've never seen one before so I had no idea of the value. I really don't even need a mag 77, my porta cable side winder seems to do the heavier jobs pretty well. I mostly use my cordless Milwaukee m18. I just want a worm drive cuz they're cool. I also wanted the 12" portable Makita hand planer I saw online for $2500. But I'm gonna have to pass on that one lol.

      If you can not spin the work around or if you have to cut with the slender side of the base as the main contact, that is a pain with any saw... no ?

    • @shannonwyatt1286
      @shannonwyatt1286 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use chainsaws on something that big...jusy faster no turning the lumber or squaring all four sides.

    • @TheCanadianBubba
      @TheCanadianBubba 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be too "rustic" a finish on this job

  • @shannonwyatt1286
    @shannonwyatt1286 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fuck that...use a chainsaw...a stihl...if you can't cut timber on a straight line with a chainsaw you don't need to be doing it. No way id drag that corded saw around like that...just a waste of my time. I can cut 3 of those timbers in the time it took you to square and cut that one. Just saying. Have two men with 2 saws and have both cutting and carrying there own cut. Two men per beam is nice but one per beam and two cutting is more productive.
