Rusted Out Red Signal Lamp Restoration

- Will this ancient signal lamp light again? Restoration of a very old, rusted out Dietz signal lamp.
This signal lamp is super old and was very very rusted out. The tank has been sealed and its use is completely safe. The most difficult part of this restoration turned out to be the glass globe. Covered completely in decades of deep scratches as well as rub scratches. I thought it was just dirt; it was scratches. Making matters worse, the glass is heat tempered which makes it very hard to polish. The glass globe alone took me 6 hours to polish, and there are still some chips and deep scratches. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
The amount of effort put into restoring that lantern was far for than what is was worth, most would never have bothered based on the extensive damage the rust had caused. BUT, you brought back to life a piece of history that can’t be replicated to the level of authenticity that your restoration brings - priceless!
Couldn't say it any better... 👍🏼😃
Thank you!
But it's nice to watch
⁰
I watch a lot of these restoration videos. This one was really impressive. I’ve never seen anyone else bring something back that was this far gone. Well done!
I admire your ability to problem solve around the siever rust and make a complete restoration. Thanks for saving this piece of history.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I **love** Dietz lanterns. This one was held together with little more than baby's breath and good wishes, and you brought it back to better than the day it was new. Glorious!
I love them, too. That's when simple, clever engineering was all it took to be efficient.
But, could it get any better than the day it was new?😉
@@Seemsayin Well….you could say that it was already ‘broken in’, I suppose.
Always nice to see worn history revived.
You have a rare talent. Your restoration shows the now and early future generations how we once lived, and the products that were once available for that era. Your restoration is amazing.
Time really took it's toll on this lamp, but you did a fantastic job bringing it back to life. Outstanding work, thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much!
Harika bir iş çıkarmışsın eline sağlık 👍👌
Red glass is worth a fortune now.. Love your restorations... 🥰😎
Hurricane light - ah! my childhood memories ❤
Mad props to people who have the talent and inclination to restore items from our past and preserve them for the future.
Beautiful restoration. The glass polishing was amazing!
Most people would just give up and throw that away or just put it somewhere and forget about it. Your dedication to the extremely laborious restoration is commendable! Thank you for the video. Now I know what to use on a few of my own rusted lanterns.
Well, the thought of giving up did cross my mind a few times with that glass globe. :)
I love Lanterns! I have 2 that were gifted to me from a client that I was a Caregiver too. He was in his 80's and the lanterns belonged to his father when the lived in California. Mine are no where as rusted as this one. Thank you for bringing it back to it's glory!!
Wow. Thanks for giving this old relic life again. Fantastic job.
Sometimes I wonder how on earth you're gonna restore these things that are in such bad condition. Then I watch and say "oh, that's how!" Great job 👍
You worked a miracle on this.
I was really impressed on how well you restored the globe!
FABULOUS job! Thank you for your time in showing the involved steps to restore this lantern!
Quality workmanship….not just rebuilt but you’ve rendered it completely functional. Lots of elbow grease…thank you for sharing this with us…Mac
honestly i didn't expect too much restoration in this video but it turned out to be a lot and I must say you did a fantastic job bringing it back to its glory. loved it ❤️
Thank you very much!
Спасибо мастеру за отличную работу, по восстановлению старинной керосиновой лампы. Все сделано с душой. Благодарю за труд. Удачи на канале.🛠️📹👍🔥
The chimney lamp of good old days. Well done. It looks more than new.Very nice.
Such a beautiful antique piece. Well done 👏👏👏👏
What an amazing job you did restoring this lantern! You gave me a few ideas for lanterns in my collection!
That history and level of excellent recovery work needs to be memorialize in a museum. It's a valuable teaching moment my friend.
Such lamps bring out a lot many memories of around 30 years ago
Wow you are an artist with restoration and I love the video. ❤
Great job. Glad to see that brought back to use.
Да будет свет! Мастеру 10+ за мастерство!!!! Это ж из рассыпавшегося металла ,восстановить,невероятно!!!!! Благодарю,интересно смотреть,как возрождается новая вещь из старой.
A wonderful signal lamp with a red glass prism, good in hurricanes or to warn Casey Jones about the washed-out bridge. Nice restoration!
Magical restoration. It's like seeing a magic trick performed and revealed at once. Very gratifying! The glass at the end was a fascinating surprise. 💖
You are amazing. All the complex pieces and you still manage to put it all together. I didn't think you could save the glass, but 6 hours later, it looks brand new.
This brought back memories of life on the farm -- we had no electricity so we relied on kerosene lamps. This is an oil lamp but they have a physical resemblance to each other. With kerosene we had to pump the lamp to increase pressure when the light dimmed and also we had to increase the height of the mantle (not wick). Yeppers -- I'm that old!!
Absolutely fascinating to watch as you bring back an object that would have been thrown away but now has a new life. Great Job!
Thank you John & Kathy!
Super job. I would never have thought about polishing the globe.
Excellent job thanks for your time and efforts for reviving this beautiful piece of history.👍
Thank you for the video, I was amazed by your dedication patience and attention to detail.
Hopefully, the lamp will give you years of wonderful service.
Brilliant job, well done

Thanks!
Watching these videos is like taking a master class on how to make old decrepit things new again. I have restored a few things but nothing on a scale like this when it comes to metal. Mostly I do projects in wood. But after binge watching as many of these videos as possible I'm developing the confidence to restore something I've wanted to for a long time. The rusted carcass of an old bicycle my grandfather got for his birthday in 1921. I'm going to guess the most challenging part will be to find rubber tires of the right style. If anyone knows anything about sourcing tires for antique bicycles I would be grateful.
What a fantastic job. Well done.
I was impressed recently as I was going to buy a lantern of DIETZ when a letter rose.
Expecting being restored by you 100 years later, and reviving, I want to use it.
One word... simply beautiful and good effort doing the restoration...only those who knows history appreciate antiques items
Nice work, probably far more filling and sanding than you want to do for a long time to come. Beautiful results.
Thanks 👍
Sent me back 50 years down memory lane
Beautiful job, well done!
Грандиозная работа, но и результат потрясающий. Молодец мастер, браво!

Absolutely beautiful, all that hard work restoring this lantern was worth it .

Absolutely brilliant restoration.
You have much more patience than me, I would have thrown that in the garbage, gone to Walmart and bought another one for $10.😊
You think you can get the (legendary) build quality of a Dietz from a $10 Chinese knock-off? In yer dreams, mate - only in yer dreams!!
Świetna jest zrobiona ta robota pozdrawiam twórcę tego filmu mile i serdecznie 👍👍👍👍
Wonderful hand work. I admire your patience and workman ship. Really great.
I stand in awe of your skill and patience restoring that lantern, beautiful job. I have a few Dietz lanterns that we use when camping.
Awesome! Thank you!
A monumental effort to get this one useable again. I like refurbishing things, but I think I would have left this one alone. Too many other ones that could use the refurbishing that weren't near crumbling. Thumbs Up!
I like a challenge.
There's an extremely high rate of damage. I appreciate your efforts to repair it. god jobs bro❤🎉
It’s a miracle ❤ fantastic workmanship
Your effort and patience in restoration is very much appreciable 🙏
Many thanks
Yeah, that one was a bit knackered as they say. I think you did well for a one time on camera lamp lighting, but I would not trust using that lantern for anything else but a decorative piece at this point. The pin holes in the tank will probably always leak as the fuel seems to find any miniscule hole available to run out of. The body fillers will start to cook on the chimney too as it can get pretty hot. I have a lantern like that as well. Thanks for the video.
The only body filler on the chimney is JB weld and it's good up to 500 °F. Not expecting any leaking since I did apply two good coats of fuel tank sealer. @7:20
That is the best rust remover on the market!!! Great restoration and you did a fabulous job restoring it!!
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thank you very much!
@@AcmeRestorations You're very welcome!!
love the color. good stuff
What an amazing job! Thank you
Мастер - золотые руки!
Отличная работа! 👍👍👍
What a beatuiful job. Congrats from Durango México. We used to have them at the farm when I was a boy. Thank you for bringing it back. 😁
Great! I am pleased to award you 101% of marks being the self-appointed appraiser of your work. Keep up the great work!!
Yes! Thank you!
I'm genuinely shocked that it didn't dissolve in the rust remover.
Yeah. With the way it looked after sandblasting, it would've made a perfect watering can than a lantern.
These old implements were made of really good quality steel. Everything on this lamp was hardened (including the glass).
I am also a person with many skills. Watching this video, I really admire the remarkable meticulousness and patience of the master. thank you
Simplesmente, incrível!
Wow! Excellent restoration ,you saved your grandma lantern I really recalled my childhood days thank you
Love the red glass in that! So cool.
Thank you! Cheers!
Ficou maravilhoso
Pretty amazing restoration. I was wondering how you would accomplish this with the thin metal and pinholes. Filler to the rescue! Great problem solving and the array of filler used was impressive. Fun to watch. Thanks so much!
Stubning resto job. Kudos on the glass polishing, lovely workmanship. Got several of these in the 'to do' pile, great inspiration 👍👍
Hard work but the end result is worth all the trouble. . Also reminds me of the days when we used these lamps in our houses . Thanks for uploading this video.
놀랍고 재밌어요
If you replace every board on a wooden ship is it still the same ship?
Well technically, he didn’t replace anything. He repaired it which is the point of the channel. 😁
You been watching 'Samson Boat Co.' videos? ;)
أذهلتني بصبرك و دقة عملك... مبدع 👍🏻👏🏻🌹🇱🇧
It is heartening to see the old lamp which wS in vogue during my younger days
Personly, Even with JB Weld I would not use a lantern in that condition again. The risk is too high it would leak again. For a display piece definitely.
My married last name was "Dietz"! Hubby said it was German. Divorced now but took my maiden name back. Kids have it as their last name though. ☺
Absolutely beautiful!❤
Excellent job..inspired me to have a closer look at my 68year old lamp
Thanks
Very nice restoration!!! Looks great!
Will be great to place on the mantle for decoration only. Beautiful job!
Oh!What a work! Out of think .Thanks brather
Great job!
You are an incredible craftsman. That thing was a hunk of junk and you turned it into a jewel. I have an old one like that but it is in much better shape.
Amazing job!!! How lucky that the original glass was still intact!!!
