  • Brandon's #1 pick for what line to use, if you could carry and use only one for every serious application, (my affiliate link on Amazon): amzn.to/3WiwCIP
This is for a 50-foot roll of 1" nylon tubular webbing with 4000 lbs. tensile strength. It is easy to tie and untie, holds its knots, can be wet, frozen, muddy, whatever. If you can find 1/2" tubular webbing that is also an incredible material for tying the Trucker's Hitch, but I didn't see it on Amazon.
    *************
Learning how to tie a trucker's hitch is one of the most useful life skills ever. Also known as a mover's knot, tie-down knot, or truckers knot, this knot is used to tie down any load by creating a super tight, slip-free knot.
The trucker's hitch is a compound knot that is frequently used for securing loads on trucks or trailers. You can also tie this knot to make a clothes line, rig a tarp, secure drybags on a raft or kayak, and a million other uses.
This knot works with any rope, flat webbing, or tubular webbing. The truckers hitch does not jam no matter how much you load the knot, and it comes apart easily once tension is released.
The knot is locked with a simple half-hitch to keep it secure even when wet or in high wind (while driving, etc.)
In this video I also teach you how to tie a G.E. Knot, which is a hitch to secure your rope to the initial anchor point. The G.E. Knot is also very easy to tie and comes apart instantly by pulling the tail of the rope.
Get some line or strap and practice tying the trucker's hitch while you watch this video. Once you master it, it's a life hack you'll have forever.

Get some rope and follow the video and practice. That’s the only way I learned how to do it. Watching a video is great for learning how to do things but sometimes you need to have the instructions in front of you until you learn how to do it correctly. Once you’ve mastered it then you won’t have any problems.

Make it even better by passing the line through the loop one more time to give it a locking action as you put tension on the rope. Also, that GE Knot isn't the most secure as it will capsize under extreme load. I use a bowline even though it isn't a quick-release knot since I know it is a great anchor knot that will come undone easily.

I was looking for help with knots to tie things down for a recent U-Haul move (CA → CO) and came across your video, among others. Yours was the best I found and easiest to follow. I felt empowered with my new skill and wanted to tie everything down. I confidently packed all the boxes, using trucker's knots to secure them, leaving an open space for bulky/miscellaneous items. Risky as it may have been, I even hung a patio bench high up on the wall over my grill, both secured by the trucker's knots you demonstrated. After 1,216 miles of driving, all of the boxes, the grill, lawnmower, and my precariously hanging bench were in exactly the same spot and hadn't budged.

This is the most useful knot that I never learned in Boy Scouts. Actually the most useful knot I have ever learned. I watched 5 or 6 videos on the trucker's hitch and your video was by far the best. I have shared it with about 10 friends so far. Thank-you for this simple, easy to follow instructional video. Yesterday, I tied down a trellis in the yard so it won't blow over in 100mph winds; 4 rope tie-offs in less then 10 minutes. It took longer to cut off the tangled mess of knots I had created in previous years.

Better. More secure, no "pinching" your tension to finish the knot, and quicker to tie. 3:42 for straight to the point, but the explanation and history is worth it.

    Brandon,
This video is now 7 yrs. old but it has been my "Go to" in my files for at least 5 yrs. it's helped me so much. Don't know why your video is so easy to remember but I always come back to it.
Really helped me the last 2 days to tie down an umbrella top on my brother's boat. I may have had to watch it 4 or 5 times. to get it down, but I can now tie everything down tight successfully,
"Righty tightey" at all 4 corners.
    Thanks Brandon.

You make it look so much easier than they do in the music video "Trucker's Hitch" by Ylvis. If you're a knot guy, you would appreciate that video more than most...you should check it out! Since I'm the guy who has always made the tangles you referred to in this video rather than real knots...I'm going to start using these 2 in the future. Thanks!

Dude, worked on the roads for years, had this old timer and he would secure some load on the truck with these knots and I'd be "how did he do that", (he did spend 18 month at a juvenile detention centre). Where some staff came from Navy training back ground so after a few thousand goes I should be "ship shape". LOL

@@BrandonNelson Your version is different to what I learned and has been known as a Carriers Hitch long before Engines moved produce on a cart. The base knot on the rope I use is a clove hitch and can be undone easily from either side as yours shows.
Cheers from John, Australia. PS Yes really, helps secure the body, LOL. NO you got to know OZZY humor. Edit for spelling, John.

If you go thru your first loop twice then no pinching is required. Guaranteed not to lose any tension while you finish your knot.
