Kenny Barron has an incredible touch and his comping, chord voicings and single lines swing hard with great taste, always in service of the music. This is great Jazz. Bob Cranshow and Allan Dawson are a great and a perfect fit into this Trio.
I'm glad this clip is back. This is simply great music. No fancy stuff, no trying to be different or orignal, just three master musicians doing their thing. Kenny Barron is at his best when he plays like that, Thanks!
I have been aware of Kenny for nearly forty years now and have seen him several times in venues large and small. His playing is so effortless and beautiful. He has made so many recordings of his own and with others that we're very lucky we have so much music of his to enjoy. This is a wonderful performance.
I love Kenny very much, but I can't understand why he is considered downright "great". He always seemed to me a wonderful, bright mainstream musician. But his musical language is not as unique as Evans' or Jarrett's.
@@Robert63675 I think that he is considered great because of how simply masterful he is. Kenny’s command of the music is like no one else and his knowledge of the jazz tradition goes deeper than most. While he may not have the innovations of Evans or the otherworldly invention of Jarrett he stands out due to how, quite frankly perfect his playing is. That is why he is a great in my eyes.
Jazz with class and style! This pure and crystal tone is for admiration. It sounds so simple and complicated in one - the modernistic lines are just great! This has made me verry happy! :)
"simple and complicated in one": the bluesy swing and simpler motifs, then sophisticated harmonies.. But the time and form never is baffling. We non Berkelee students know where in the song we are. .I dinnae understand why jazz must be totally incomprehensible to be acceptable to many players. 7/8 bah. Save it for your senior recital and then leave it there.
In general.we take Bob so ightly.Because today most bass player use a special microphone directly on the bass ,and with the strings lowered the technique become easier. So the technical difiiculties are somehow behind them, and they are free to concentrate on music. After all they forget choise of notes ,quality of sound and the manner in which the notes are given in continuity. So,Bob has long been accepted as one of the most tasteful and best equipped in the jazz world.
Great to watch Alan Dawson (T. Williams' teacher and mentor) palying with the formidable K. Barron and pure swing man B. Crashaw. Thank you for posting!
With all respect, so BEYOND Oscar! More variation and surprise . . . St. PETERson may be at the heavenly gate, but this dude is more God than mere chops. Let's celebrate his extraordinary gift -- he can do less to create more and summon more whenever it matters to help keep it changing rather than more of the same. The reigning Baron and Lord of jazz piano.
For my money, the greatest living jazz pianist. If you`re new to his work, check out the original configuration of the group Sphere with Charlie Rouse.
About Bob Cranshow That night Bob played with every pianist You Don't Know What Love Autumm Leaves (Kenny Barron) Someone To Watch Over Me Tin Tin Deo (Tommy Flanagan) Blue Monk (Ral Bryant & Junior Mance) Tea For Two ~ Stardust (Duke Jordan) That means he can plays modestly and carefully, dose not wants to make himself conspicuous, So I can say he is a modest Walker♪
@@marcusstoica Cranshaw was a monster. From his early work with Sonny Rollins to his funky baseline on The Sidewinder to his work on electric bass... he was a bassist for all occasions.

Kenny Barron succeeds in making the many and many times (by almost every musician in the world, profs, amateurs) song Autumn Leaves soundig fresh and new. Bravo. Check also his work with the late Stan Getz.
They're brilliant. He likes to use the circle of fifths in other ways throughout the solos, too. His technique is flawlessly crisp. Each note--no matter how fast--is clean and lets the piano ring. I like Oscar, too; however, Barron plays more from ideas than from runs--it is true improvisation at its best.
Stunning awesome performance. Yes, it’s too late to change it, but to be fair and get the musical history correct, "Autumn Leaves" was composed by Joseph Kosma with the original lyrics by Jacques Prévert in French, and LATER by Johnny Mercer in English. That Mercer get first billing instead of third in the credits is not an accurate way of indicating it. None the less, thankyou so much for uploading it.
I was thinking, it would be fun to have someone like that in your living room to explain, how you do it right, on that tune (Autumn Leaves). Then again, you could just listen to Kenny and try to pick up on it cause it's right on track and then even if you just got "some" of it, you would still be way better off for it, than you were before!
The fidelity of this recording is fantastic. That piano sounds amazing.
I can't like this enough
Kenny Barron is the very definition of a Master Muscian!

Alan Dawson..no words to describe..
Superb! A Masterclass in the art of jazz of all times! Im speechless...
This is a thing of beauty, nothing less.
Unbelievably beautiful yet powerful. I'm well aware of all the great jazz pianists that have gone before him, but to me there has never been better.
Been listening to many players do this classic.... so far, nobody beats this!! Sublime!!! Could listen to this all day!!
It was a great pleasure. Thanks to Kenny Baron and whoever posted the video.
Sentimiento , este señor toca con el corazón..todos sus temas son excelentes 👏👏
Absolutely magnificent! Thank you so much.
And the great prize of watching Mr. Dawson play live! To those who might not know him, Mr. Dawson was Tony Williams' teacher!
Incomparable lines and phrasing; so musical and inspiring. You're the best!!

枯葉の名演はたくさんあるけど、これは格別素晴らしい!!!
Impresionante trio que encaja raya a la perfección.
It doesn't get any better than this! Brilliant performance by all three.
Such an excellent performance in everyway. Wow!
Kenny sounds like no one else. In my many years on this planet there is no else that comes close of his piano genius.
Herbie? Mccoy Tyner?

Great playing. Makes the day brighter!
My man Kenny it doesn't get any sweeter than that my brother.
Alan Dawson, master of the brushes
I usually don't write comments on videos but this one I just can't pass without writing one. That guy's haunting good.
Bob Cranshow? Bob Cranshaw! The drummer and piano players are the ingredients that are held by the melted butter of the bass. What a unit - excellent!
the great A.Dawson - the teacher and mentor of Tony Williams!!
And Vinnie Coaliuta! A true master of the art of the accompanist-drummer!

His "touch" or whatever reminds me of Wynton Kelly. Great stuff.
Love it. Bravo!

A rare opportunity to see Cranshaw on upright. Dawson!! And Kenny!
After 50 years I thought knew all the possible changes on Leaves .. but no. Superbissimo!!.

Total perfection every time he plays. Reminds me Wynton, he’s the same way . Great gift to the world

One of the best, from what it seems. Good bassists provide a great ground for the song. This gentleman had me completely floored.

That intro alone will take years of study to fully understand.
Or one lesson from a good teacher :)
Excelente a genial!

Wow Kenny is wonderful when he is a soloist sort of. I loved him with Stan Getz.
Love this pianist mixing jazz and blues modes. I agree, it sounds like Peterson's style
Julien Morazin and bill evans too
Doesn't sound like Peterson at all. Some people don't have neither ears nor a clue...
