Even if the average listener has a stereo setup and they are fairly far away from it, it’s still going to sound “mono.” Your average person is NOT sitting in a perfect equilateral triangle sweet spot to listen to all of our horrible mixes. Haha mixing in mono HELPS

When listen to Mono? Near all u hear in a Supermarket is in mono. When u go in a club there will be mono, EDM make extra mono mixes for big dancehalls. When u watch TV the most is in mono. The most portable radios are in mono, so the most people listen to radio on workspace or so listen in mono. The most live concerts are mixed in mono. theater audio is in mono.
You should better ask when we are listening in stereo, this is more rare. Some examples. When u sit in a car u listen to stereo? When u listen music at home is it in stereo? The "problem" with stereo is u must be in the sweet spot, in the right angle and distance to the speakers (near field monitors, mid field monitors, far field monitors. for mixing you use near field speakers, did u ever ask yourself when the customors listen to near field systems? The only time i listen to near field systems is when i visit a friend in his studio with a near field system. In the past i found near field systems next to the screen of PCs...but they are no more trend.), only than it is real stereo.
Many people listen to music with headphones, is this stereo? Nope. Stereo is Centre, Left Right "in front" of the listener. Headphones got the centre inside your head and left and right are 90°. Stereo got the centre before you and left and right are maximum 60° "in front".
The most people no more got a classical stereo system at home. What comes closest is a 2.1 System the most use witn a PC, so satellites and a subwoofer. For TV atm soundbars are trendy or sourround systems with 4.1 or more. This systems are often weak when listen stereo music over it, ok for home cinema but bad for quality music in stereo.
U say the argument with the phones no more count ebcaus ethe most smartphones are stereo today? But do the most people listen over the internal piezo speakers? Most time they use headphones...or blutooth speakers and the most are in mono.
When u are mixing in front of your monitors and the head look into the centre, there u got stereo. But u only need to turn the head a bit left or rigt and the stereo field is broken and it is no more real stereo. When u sit only a tiny bit closer to one speaker as to the other, it is no more real stereo.
So u can see, real stereo is more rare as the most might think.

You do realize that you can direct mono tracks to both speakers right? If you mix in stereo, and you are listening in stereo as you mix, it really is almost impossible to tell what your mix will sound like if the perfect stereo balance is compromised. If you mix in mono you can compensate for any potential loss... I've NEVER faced a situation where I was disgusted with a mix after upgrading to a more robust stereo system. The final mastered mix will either sound better or be about the same... Conversely I *HAVE* been SHOCKED at the result of playing my mix back on a system that is somewhat compromised. Mixing in mono is the best way to assure that what you've intended as the sound of your music is represented in almost ANY system.... What's more your very assertion that everyone is listening in stereo underscores my point... It's the very REASON why you should mix in mono... When someone listens in stereo, IT WON'T COMPROMISE a mix that sounds good through only one channel, because you're getting that one channel, IN ADDITION to the other channel that is well balanced. Conversely, If one of your stereo channels is compromised, you may be listening to something that is missing HALF of what you wanted to convey!!! NO GOOD!!! MIX IN MONO!!!!

In the 60s there was a lot teenagers and twens get beatles fans. And all what they was listening was in mono. From the engineering side they invested weeks for the mono mixes and only houres for the stereo mixes. Stereo systems was rare and very expensive.
In the 70s stereo systems get more affortable and so they started to listen to stereo records over stereo systems...and they made strange faces and often they was dissapointed. This was not "the sound" they knowed and loved from their idols.
only some years ago the recording idustry realized this and so more as one Vinyl-Boxes with only stereo mixes of the Beatles came out and was the Beatles fans loved it.
Similar stories from other Bands not rare.
Mono got a power stereo never can reach.

When I make dance and performance tracks I write the entire track in mono. 1.) I have a portable PA for busking, single speaker. 2.) I actually do have a 2.0 stereo setup for club speakers, but I STILL make in mono if I can... because no one is going to hear the stereo.
Most normal tracks I do in stereo though.

I do my best to get all my processing to equate tracks to -12dB, even just with a trim plug, BEFORE moving any faders for balance or doing automation. Anyone else do similar? Ive found mixing to be WAY easier doing it this way, how about y'all?

Great points and I commend you for challenging conventional lessons.
I generally set a static mix with levels and panning in stereo, then I spend roughly 15 minutes EQing in mono to clean up the mix. Particularly the low end and frequencies where low end instruments cross into higher frequencies. I find mono reveals frequency build up better than stereo does.
From there I flip to stereo and really don’t check mono until the end where I double check for phase issues etc.
I’m actually working on a shootout between JST skybox and the Strymon bigsky for my second TH-cam channel launching next weekend. Looking forward to putting it through its paces.

Hi Mike, I am sorry I’ve only just seen this comment. Unfortunately the above advice isn’t accurate, with the 1st point being irrelevant to any valid technical reason why mono mixing is bad. The reason why you mix in mono is to get a greater sense of space in the mix and to make better EQ decisions. You cannot be fooled by the stereo image. By mixing in mono you will create more space, which will lead to louder masters, making frequency masking easier to combat, because you are only dealing with a mono image.

I mix in mono a lot.
Majority of time I'm either checking or mixing stuff in mono and I get good results doing it.
It translates better to any other system may it be mono, stereo or 5.1 for me when doing it in mono as opposted to mixing mostly in stereo.
It's just a tool, like mixing in stereo is just a tool, a different set of information.
You can't listen to music the same in mono like you're used to do in stereo, it requires different type of listening, it's different skill, that's why for some people it works, for others not...
For example sounds that are panned to either side should be quieter than sounds that are in center when listening in mono, because hard panned sounds play only from one speaker instead of two for sounds positioned close to center, etc...
Everybody uses pretty much the same tools these days, but we all get very different results, so it's not the tools as much as it is the way you are able to listen and can hear stuff that others may overlook, it's always been like that...
So the conclusion is...Mix in Mono!
Mix all kinds of ways, just learn to use it to your advantage, not to your detriment!

The (phantom) centre is physical only possible when there are minimum two channels (stereo).
Mono is like u are on the north pole and and all directions from there are south. There can be no west or east. So a centre only can be exist when u got minimum point A and point B, so centre is exaxt in beetween them. When u only got point A where is the centre than? Correct, there is no centre, only point A. U can build a centre when u got more than two points, no problem.

So I listened to Flesh god Apocalypse - the top rated one in Spotify called 'the violation' and that track collapses In mono. So much information is lost that it has to be totally out of phase L-R? Do you not worry that when a mix has this much phase issues that it is harder to translate these mixes in different room setups?
I went through all the mixes in rick beato's last video checking out the metal top ten and pretty much every song collapsed in mono. And when you switch to stereo all the mixes have these nasaly artefacts.
    My question to you is
is the mix of 'the violation' track acceptable considering the amount if information that cancels out when mono'd?
If you play the same game on the 'Damn' album they are rock solid in mono hardly loose any thing and quite frankly sounds amazing.
These metal producers are all doing something weird which I would like to understand what they are using to cause this effect.

U talk from phase cancellation. I ask me if all your tracks are in phase when u get those massive difference when switch beetween mono and stereo. Check it!
Do not use stereo to shade your mixing issues.
Phase most time no more get checked by EDM producers. They trust in that the virtual instrumenst and samples and recorded or sampled vocals will fit automaticly in phase to each other. When u ever recorded a real drum kit with real microphones than the first thing u do before start mixing is check and set the entire kit in phase. And later do it with all tracks of the song.
And after we mixed with nice plugins we shopuld check the phase again. Plugins can cause phase problems because some got latency. Heavy usage of EQs, special when boosting lot frequencies can also bring phase problems.
