This is hands down, one of the best mixing and audio tip channels on TH-cam. While others promise some magical pro secrets, these videos are typically "keep it simple, stupid" which in a world of a billion options, is refreshing and great advice.
2:51 Yes please! And if I may make a suggestion: whenever you are trying to compare something such as the muddy bass example where you were applying dynamic EQ or multiband compression, and then showing the example without it, please don't apply the difference in the middle of a riff. In that example you showed, on the first half of the bass riff (where the bass was playing higher notes), there was no application added to the mix. Then when the bass was playing on the lower register, you applied the edit on the mix, and it made it harder for me to appreciate the difference between the two mixes. Other than that, these videos are literally the holy grail of audio lessons for me, and I thank you ever so much for it!
For sure, next time i'll just have the whole riff play through. I try to keep them as short and sweet as possible but i'll def address this next go around! -Miami
Great job Miami, not only are you killing it with the instruction, but your transition game continues to grow in power. I've got a specific question for you. I'm mixing a metal project right now and was considering using sidechain multiband compression to duck specific bass frequencies on kick hits. I have heard different opinions on whether or not rapid tempo double kick 16ths become too close together to allow compression of this type to work properly. Of course my ears will be the final guide but any advice you have to get me started is appreciated. There's a lot of info out there but you and JST are rising to the top of my go-to list, keep it up man.🤘
Thanks David! I would say still try sidechaining it. Even if the kicks are too fast to let the bass in between the kicks, they will still hold down the low end most likely! Especially if you split your bass so people can hear whats happening up top for the note definition. Give it a shot! -Miami
I love how you keep your videos under 10 minutes. Other videos that talk about mixing are just too damn long. I find myself getting impatient and wondering, "when are you going to tell me something useful???" Your videos are concise and informative, so thank you.
i always shoot to keep it under 10. Sometimes its hard and might go a little over, but if i do that its because its really important info thats impossible to explain in less time. -Miami
Great tips, Miami, thanks a lot! Please do make the video on the differences between Dynamic Eqs and multi-band compression. Would be much appreciated.
Reference is the key, whenever u hear music, it helps to mentally (or physically) take notes of what u like (or don't like) about it all, instead of blindly shoving everything you have together and hoping for the best
The first tutorial I saw with you wanted me to turn it off, but I watched it to the end and since then I'm always excited for the next one 😊 there's no need to have a flashy intro when the content are as good as yours are ❤💪🤘🤘
I usually end up turning down my S's with automation. I've tried a de-esser, but I never like how it sounds. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it always leaves my vocal sounding too dull. I know some people will boost the high end after a de-esser to counteract that. I'd love to hear any other tricks you have for combatting the dulling effect of a de-esser.
I'm a beginner at mixing, and it seems impossible for me to get a modern metalcore sound. My mix sounds old... Do you guys recommend any plugins, vst instruments, sample packs etc? Love the content!
I didn’t understand the wrong snare example as it was hard to hear them both. Was the white snare the correct or wrong? Were they both wrong? Idk. Was listening in my car.
Never got the results I have wanted trying out multiple de-ess plug-ins. Usually just manually decrease the gain of the raw vocal, on Ssssssss, before it hits any processing.
I always make sure to show my music to people who aren’t musicians or producers. The average listener who WISHES they could play an instrument or do this and don’t realize all they have to is put in the time. Those people tend to like a lot of what’s on the radio and mainstream music, so if they feel my songs, then I know I’m on to something.
These types of videos you put out recently, made me create my most fattest mix yet, on the song I'm currently working on. Absolute quality advice right here. Btw: With this singing voice, you could replace Jacoby from Papa Roach one day if he desires to retire. :D
Can you do a video of where to build a recording studio for people who don’t have the space in their home, but have the money to rent a place for their studio but also don’t know what to rent
Holy shit, not enough de-essing on vocal delays or reverbs. Especially hearing a vocal ping-pong delay go ss ss ss left and right. That will absolutely pull me out of a mix.
I put 1400 Watts of power, 2 15’s,2 10’s, 4 8’s 6 6.5’s and a plethora of tweets into a 2013 Toyota Corolla so I could feel that kick drum. Who needs a trunk or back seat I need sound! No replacement for displacement n all that jazz.
my project goal was to have it feel like a 28 inch Ludwig kick drum was in the backseat… mission accomplished. now I got to figure out how to mash that sound into an extended cab Tacoma? I’ll probably just go with a pair of 10s and big tactile transducers on my seat as the wife don’t do much love the boom as much as I do.
For the snare reference if i ever heard the wrong snare sound for an album it would be St. Anger. the songs themselves aren bad but the snare sound made everything sound bad.
That’s definitely a go to example. Even if the rest of the mix was amazing it wouldn’t matter, because we’re so used to a good snare sound that it becomes distracting when it isn’t. I feel like that was done on purpose on st. Anger just to give us something to talk about lol -Miami
/ˈZHänrə/ not JohnRah... it's a ZHä .... like Dr. Zhivago... it's a Z H sound like Zhuzh. Sorry to be the one... but as someone that knows Slavic/Cyrillic it's annoying. Even in French it's the Zh sound. BTW love your products and own many. Also love the tutorials... just this one minor itch.
