I have a 2000 Ford e350 super duty extended cargo van 5.4L 330Cu. In. V8 GAS SOHC Naturally Aspirated. it got broken into and they tried to steal it and damaged the airbag. I looked on Ebay for a used one but they keep showing me airbags for EXPEDITION. I typed in the information for my vehicle at first it say it fits my vehicle, then when I click on the sellers page, it say on top of image to the left
"This item doesn't fit", but when I scroll down to the Compatibility list, my vehicle is listed in the Compatibility list of vehicles. Do you know where I can get a fair priced airbag for my vehicle ?

Auto tech for many years with GM. This is why I Love Fords... I'd take the 5.0 all day every day over all other choices. The superficial leak here and there is nothing vs the competitions major internal failures, lifter issues spreading metal throughout / DOD issues, etc. Have always loved your content, just surprised to hear the strong words against the 5.0 for the reasons given.

Please see my previous response- Not saying they break down at all. I am just very disappointed in the engine as I had high hopes for them when they came out in 2011. The cylinder bore distortion issues, tuliped valves, way too many coolant leaks, some oil consumption issues on the rear cylinders, ignition coil bolts that rot and break (unacceptable in this day and age), valve cover bolts that rot and are miserable to remove mainly 11-14 models, the embarrassing tapping knocking noises all of these make, they have a stamped oil pan and elastomeric gasket just like the 5.4L (which never ever leak) yet the 5.0L leaks like crazy and soak the underside of the engine (why is this even happening, again very disappointing), I am not impressed with the power I think they are a dog (maybe I am used to the EcoBoost power) except the mustang calibrations and 21+ are much better. Also, you do know about the bucket load of major issues with the 2018-2020 models right? I am hoping the cylinder deactivation and wet oil pump belt on the 21+ models are not another disappointment in the future. There may be other concerns I cannot think of right now. Now do you understand my point of view? Oh and almost forgot about the IMRC issues on the 15+ models (again I have never even had to diagnose an IMRC concern on the 5.4L 3v)

@@FordTechMakuloco Thank you for replying and noting - "Not saying they break down at all" - as well as clarifying the reasons for your comments as I respect your opinion. I hear you with regard to the annoying "mostly" non major failure issues you listed. Working on these engines day in and day out, i agree, it's a lot. The similar non major failure issues with GM's 5.3 snapping exhaust manifold bolts, oil usage, misfires, intake issues etc. etc. again brings me to GM's scary displacement on demand failure rate. I'm pretty sure GM used a 3rd party company out of California for their newer DOD setup. I too truly hope that Ford's in house cylinder deactivation setup on the newer Coyote's holds up better. I hate the fact that the government pushes car companies to have to design these systems for CAFE regs, upping the complexity of the engines for tiny gains but these are the times we live in I guess. Now I understand your point of view.

@@FordTechMakulocoI’m surprised you think it’s underpowered. I’ve seen videos of the newer 5.0s beating the 3.5 eco in drag races or at least staying right there with it. The 1st gen F-150 5.0 makes 360hp which is 5 more HP than the current 5.3 from GM which I think is pretty amazing considering it’s a smaller displacement than the 5.3.

@@OhioStateBuckeyefanstuckinMII have the 5.0 and I wouldn't say it lacks power by any means but I understand where he's coming from. The 5.0 is tuned to be lazy from the manufacture until you pop it into sport mode. I think people get used to the eco boost power and how quick the engine spools the turbo giving that low range torque sooner while coyotes make all their power higher up in the band

My limited perspective is my ‘17 Coyote with 120k has only needed a (very accessible) new water pump that was $95 and I couldn’t be happier. I may just go with an ecoboost like you down the road though if all this new stuff they’re starting to do with the new coyotes starts reducing it’s great reliability track record.

I own a 2011 gen 1 Coyote in my F150. I don't want anything newer. It runs great, it had the y pipe gasket change, a new thermostat installed, and the coolant switched from orange to yellow. It is supremely reliable, decent on gas, quick enough for me, and has handled towing everything I have hooked on to the hitch. The EcoBoost engines generate more grunt, I've driven a few of them, but the added complexity, and almost certain turbo maintenance issues keep me from wanting to own one. The exhaust note isn't befitting a half ton pickup truck either. I have been around trucks my entire life, and what they have morphed into is radically different than what they have always been in the past. Simple, reliable, powerful, and reasonably priced. The only genuine benefit I can applaud is the old generations of trucks usually rusted away years sooner than today's aluminum trucks. I had a 1978 C10 that was well on its way to rust thru before it was 6 years old. My 2011 has the cab corner rot as well as the outer rocker panel rot, but is holding together at 13 years old.

The block had a gouge and the number four-cylinder and losing over 3 1/2 quarts of oil in 3000 miles. The transmission had a major catastrophic failure and was stuck in seventh gear. All was replaced under factory warranty. The dealer had it for about seven weeks. Now it’s at 72,000 miles and I just paid it off. I will be selling it in a couple months.

I am new to your channel & I'm glad I ran across your channel 👍🏻. Last June 2023 I purchased a 2006 Ford F150 XLT Super Crew with the 5.4L Triton V8. I have heard the horror stories of the spark plugs breaking off in the head and the placement of the secondary blower motor under the intake manifold and it going out. So far the truck has been great but I am just about at 90k and I know the timing chains have to be replaced between 85k to 120k, the cost here at the dealership is $2700! I'm an old time car & truck owner so this is a 1st for me. That's a lot of money but I can see why now, after just replacing the oil and filter 🤪😆 what a freaking nightmare! The best 5.0L is the 15-17 (2nd gen). They have more power and torque than the older ones, don’t have the oil consumption issues the newer ones have. And they are damn reliable. Yeah they have some coolant leak issues, but that’s easy to fix. Generally pretty cheap to repair as well. There aren’t really any catastrophic failure points in those engines.

2017 with 112k ...bought new from the dealership and serviced correctly. I had a small coolant leak that I took my truck in for and the dealer couldn't duplicate the leak. I know a saw red fluid on the right side inner frame so I'm keeping a close eye now. It's been a perfect vehicle with no issues other than the small leak that went away....for now and a lower mixing valve for the cabin temp control. which was covered under warranty.

Trust me when I say, the engineers HATED these Quick Connects. ONE company making them, and we are CERTAIN they were a high ranking executives family. They were also added because the UAW assembly workers were screwing up time and again on the assembly. Multiple times not pulling grenade pins, not having the hose positions properly, not , etc...and all complaining of "Repetitive Motion Injuries". The Degas bottle they went back to the supplier at least 20 times when I was there screaming about the ultrasonic weld being weak. I believe that supplier lost a bunch of business on that (no new programs, charge backs, etc). Problem is, hundreds of thousands of parts in the wild before many of the issues found.

It is noisy though, mainly the VCT rattle on deceleration when cold. Ford calls for 5w20 in the 18-20 5.0s, but I’ve been running Amsoil 5w30 in it since the second oil change, it definitely helped with the oil consumption and noise.

I agree.. I had the old 302 in a 95 F150 extended cab, 5spd 4x4. It was a great truck, but that engine was gutless-- especially when towing; 5.0L is just too small in a full sized truck IMO. It was perfect in 4wheel Low though and would go anywhere I wanted with some mud bogger treaded tires on it. It was ultra reliable and I never had any issues with it, but I finally spun a bearing at around 340k miles.. So I was definitely happy to upgrade to a 2002 F350 7.3L diesel, 6pd manual 4x4.. I still think this is the best truck Ford ever made.. Mine is already past 300k miles and going strong. All original glow plugs and injectors; I just did a new water pump and heat exchange tube- big O'ring seals and gaskets all at once. New oil and new coolant. It's ready for another 100k miles now. :) .. god willing

Thanks so much for answering my comment! I had a feeling the issues ran way deeper than what you got into in the video as far as just coolant leaks and such and I hope a lot more people read your response because it makes a lot more sense to why you view the 5.0l with so much disappointment. I know the 18-20 2nd gen coyotes were really REALLY bad but from what I’d heard I always thought the first gen coyotes were fairly reliable. And I always figured I’d rather deal with coolant leaks and such as opposed to phaser and timing issues. I appreciate you opening my eyes to some of the issues that aren’t talked about with the 5.0l outside of coolant leaks. I wouldn’t mind seeing more videos discussing issues with the 5.0l since Ford still makes them and they’re starting to get a lot older now (even tho I know you’re career is mostly in the 5.4l)
PS. I’ve religiously watched your content since 2017 when I performed my first timing job on an 04 f-150. Your videos saved me big time when I almost got aftermarket phasers so thank you. Keep up the great content and appreciate all the info you share.

As a mechanic that's worked on tons of Ford trucks and Mustangs that T connector 7/10 times is the reason here in Florida. I have seen several of the newer F150 2015+ where overflow leaks. In my experience working on 2011+ mustangs is that damn t connector.

I noticed recently the problem you mentioned about the valve cover bolts rusting away. Mine are so bad i don't think it will be possible to remove them without a torch and its kind of hard to use a torch when the valve cover is platic 😭

He's a brand specific mechanic, he's documenting COMMON problems, not problems that every vehicle is going to have.
If he was a GM or a Honda specialist he'd have a different list of 5 leak points...
Every single vehicle has it's trouble areas that brand specific mechanics see often, it doesn't mean all vehicles have that issue.

Do you recommend the 3.5 EccoBoost in the F150? I have a 2015 and love it. At 145K miles, no issues. Have done all the maintenance myself which includes regular oil changes at 6K miles with full Synthetic Mobil 1 and ford filters. I changed the plugs at 90k miles as I started getting a misfire under boost. Love my truck, it's my daily and I pull trailers with other vehicles on it for my hobbies (restoring vehicles) and it really pulls a trailer nicely.

I have a 2012 Jaguar with what is basically a 5.0 Coyote engine in it. Not supercharged. I actually like it. 90,000 miles, of which I've put 35 k on it. Already had that tee replaced before I bought it. Good to know about these leak points though. I still have the old 5.4 3V in my old Expedition, but the 5.0 is easier to access stuff on, at least for me. And, I can actually get to the oil filter without having to be a contortionist.

The problem are those quick connect hoses. Had a BMW and they use the same style quick connect hoses as well and you have to be careful and ensure they click in otherwise you could be driving and suddenly your car starts overheating because the hose came loose and spilled out all the coolant. Now you got a warped head & a blown head gasket. Ask me how I know...😢

There are bad parts of Maine (where I live now) but I live up in the woods in a tiny town that does not represent the city, just like all of CA is not full of tents, it's a beautiful state with diverse landscape.

Great video as always. I'm constantly torn between the 3.5 eco and the 5.0. Weary of the turbos on the 3.5 over the life of the truck, but then your opinion on the 5.0 is noted. Obviously there'll always be unforeseen issues, just taking my time and doing research to find the best option between the two.
