  • Ford Ranger, Mazda pick up truck rear door repair WITHOUT removing door panels. The door failed to open due to a common door handle latch cable end failure. The original cable end was made out of plastic which becomes brittle with time/temperature and breaks. The available aftermarket repair parts are made from machined aluminum, available via the internet. I purchased the one used in this video from Ebay under the search: Ford Back door handle latch cable repair kit or use this link: ebay.us/mTMy1E

I just performed this procedure on my 2006 Ranger, LH back door. My local Advance Auto Parts had the part kits (Dorman #926-111) in stock! I used a 5/32" pin punch to punch out the rivet bodies, then tried to drill them out. That only spun the the rivet heads, so I simply knocked the 9/16" dia. rivet heads off with a hammer and chisel. One word of advice - clean and lubricate the sliding lock forks that hold the cable end ferrule in place. Also, make sure the slit on the replacement cable end is turned properly when reinserting the ferrule into the door handle mechanism so that the cable doesn't keep trying to get out of the ferrule. Overall time to fix one door handle was less than 1/2 hour. Emilio, thanks for the confidence that your video gave me.

This makes soooo much more sense than removing the seat belt and door panel. Thank you Emilio!

Sometimes you got no choice but removing the seat belt and the panel if the problem is at the other end of the cable! But I'm glad that the video helped you.

I can see the plastic part is broken behind the handle, so Im hoping that your quick fix will do the job. I will know more once I get into it.

Drilling out the rivets would have been my first choice over the grinder.

. Others are suggesting you have to take inside trim off and open the door which is way more work. Drill and chisel removed the rivets. To test my door after cables were hooked up I had to place handle back in door for it to work properly. Rivets installed works perfect. Thanks for the great video.

I was worried that I would have to pay someone but after watching the video I was confident that I could do. I just needed to get the rivet gun n rivets cause I had never worked with that but it thanks to your video the job went smooth. Plus you didn’t make it complicated like other videos I watched. Thanks again

The center pin on the rivets are easy to punch back. Then the aluminum rivets are also easy to drill out. If the plastic sleeves on the cable ends of the handles are deteriorated then the cable ends on the latches are bad also. However, the cable ends on the latches are not removable as they have a small ball on the end that cannot be taken out of the latches. You must first remove the cables from the handles then slide new metal sleeves on the cable ends at the latches. Then reinstall the latches. This is so you will have enough slack to install the new sleeves. Then you can install the handles and sleeves.

Thank you for the great video . I bought a decent 2001 Ranger XLT 4X4 for $760 . The truck has some issues but well worth what I paid for it . Both of the extended doors latches are broken and can't open the passenger side at all . I thought I may have to remove the latch but wasn't sure . Your video helped extremely well. Thank you again for posting this video.

Thank you for the video. Both my Ranger handles broke at about the same time and I had no experience with rivets. Using a drill, removing the first 2 rivets on the passenger handle took forever due to the way the rivet was done. The original mandrel wasn't broken off well and was sticking out of the rivet head. This made it very difficult to drill as the bit was constantly slipping off (and I did use a center punch). When I fixed the second handle I started with the smallest drill bit I had to get into the narrow mandrel in the rivet. I then stepped the bits up and finished with the 3/16 bit. It literally went 10x faster doing this and the bit didn't slip at all like it did on the other handle.

Thanks for this video!! It was a big help. I got my replacement sleeves at Autozone and the employee knew exactly what I needed after I said "I have an old '02 Ford truck with busted back door handles..." 😄
I used a hammer and punch to get the centers out of the rivets, and then just a little drilling to remove the remainder. Everything else was just like your video, except I didn't know at first how far back the new parts needed to go over the black cable sleeve. Answer: as far back as possible.

Good info ! , I was able to use a punch to drive out the center ( only ) of the rivet & then lift the remaining rivet head by hammering a painter's tool blade underneath the head . Amazon had the parts / sleeves , hopefully here in 3 days ( $7 ) . I ( 70 yo & not as skillful as years ago )will be a very happy camper if all goes well .

Toughest part was putting the cable back into the handle. But managed to get it back in after sliding the aluminum piece as far down the cable it could go.
