  • This is just a general overview of the "integrated" winch mount I made for my 1996 4runner using scrap metal and drunken booger welds. If enough people care to see more of how it was made, I'll do a more in-depth build description with slightly less terrible production

    Just so everyone knows, I have not forgotten about making a more detailed video. I was going to start making one and decided to start an LS swap in the LX450 that replaced this 4runner instead. I promise I'll get to it eventually

      The 4runner was just sold, but it was replaced with an lx450 which has a shockingly similar front frame set up. I'll probably be making another one and will be sure to better document the whole process

    I’m like y’all. It’s too much trouble, not to mention expensive, to have a special bumper fabricated for the gen 3. Something like this is just what I need.

    Can u still put on a push bumper on that?

  • @plutosforest

    Is the frame extension and top/bottom plates welded to the original frame? Just glancing at it, it looks like only the rear-most bolts would be load bearing. The 4 other bolts would just be pulling on the rear bolts if I'm not mistaken.

    • @DeathByBilly
      @DeathByBilly  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The frame extensions also bolt on using the tow hook bolts and where the frame end caps bolt on, giving it 8 load bearing points on the frame. There are some after market winch bumpers that don't even use that many points

    • @plutosforest
      @plutosforest 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's legit! You mentioned possibly doing a more in depth explanation, I would love to see one if you have the time.
      There is a company, Ampd Up Fabrications, that sells a bolt on mount using the 4 bolts by the tow hook. That's less than what you use. They charge $270 for the mount. I wonder what you spent on the metal.
      I'm not set up to weld, so even after bolted on I'd be going to a shop to get everything reinforced. This is my first time looking into winches, and it seems like an episode of Junkyard Wars.

      @@plutosforest I spent far less than that on metal. I recently picked up 20 feet of 6"x1/4" steel for $100. The 4runner has been sold, so I can't really do an in depth explanation right now. In the spring I plan on making a similar set up for my fj80 and will do a better job of explaining/showing the steps as I make it

    What is the frame rail tubing dimensions? Thanks looks sweet!

    • @DeathByBilly
      @DeathByBilly  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean the frame rail extensions? I never recorded dimensions, and the 4runner was sold several months ago. The plates on the top and bottoms of the rails were just long enough to bolt into the available frame locations, and the extended front sections were just long enough to fit a 6" plate and still clear the winch ahead of the radiator

    • @dustinross0910
      @dustinross0910 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the frame rail extensions

    • @DeathByBilly
      @DeathByBilly  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dustinross0910 the above is the best explanation I have for the dimensions

  • @howdareyou7829

    Do u think i could do that and still put on a ECOTRIC front black steel bumper protector

    • @DeathByBilly
      @DeathByBilly  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sure you could find a way with enough fabrication, but I'm not sure why you would. This thing took a couple impacts as is with no problems

  • @Kyle-ev4fk

    What is the reason for the 3/16" plate between the 1/4" plate and the frame on either end of the mount? What does it weigh? Also it looks like the bumper could have been trimmed tighter.

    • @DeathByBilly
      @DeathByBilly  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The 3/16 is there as extra bracing to prevent flex. Otherwise the winch would essentially just be tied to a single plate of non-hardened quarter inch, which I don't trust to take the kind of abuse I put it through. I have no idea on weight, but I would guess around 50lbs. The bumper is trimmed that way so you can easily access the winch controls and controller plug in. Sure it could be in tighter on the winch and still operate, but I'm a function over form kind of guy and I like not snagging my gloves when I'm witching in a hurry
