We've found that if the engine has a cam with a decent amount of overlap, the single barrel carb can't handle it. Lift, no problem, but overlap needs dual carbs. Nice vid. I see this crap roll in every week to my shop.
For a second there George, I thought you were gonna pull the engine for a detail. 🤣 That must of drove you nuts. She is in good hands and is gonna be one dialed in beautiful cruiser. 🤙Congrads to the owner.
great video for us folks that don't much about vw engines. I've been working on them for years but still a lot to learn. Could you please do more videos like this where you talk about things that need to be corrected on vws. If you already have a some, sorry I will have to look through older videos.
When you did get it running, almost sounded like the fan was noisy - perhaps the nut was loose or the fan was scraping against the sheetmetal. Also at full suspension droop, the muffler was up against the RR brake caliper.
George - random business model question. Do you consult owners before taking on work. I can't see you taking that car in the way you did without it being a referral from close friend or well established customer. I guess more plainly, what governs taking on a new customer?
Thanks for the answer George. It's simple in premise but really logical. Keep churning out the videos - we enjoy them. Hope to say hello at BBB next year. Best@@the_Wagen
Very informative video, but this is a 1600cc engine, right? Dual HPMX carbs on such a small engine sounds like overkill to me. A single HPMX is a bit much, but would work better. A pair of Kadrons would be better for such a small motor, but this is only my humble opinion.
40mm HPMX only have a 26mm vent. It is far from over carbed. The dual carbs are more efficient. Single carb set ups are junk. Kadrons are door stops and Sloppy carbs. I’ve had great experiences with HPMX 40’s on stock motors. And we don’t know the displacement of this engine. We will see when it happens. Parts have started arriving. 👍🏽 stay tuned.
Yeah that is a clean bug, did you say the owner just picked it up? So the dude he bought it from did a good job on the cosmetics, but bad job on the engine. Previous owner prob took off the dual carbs when he sold it.
No preheat on the manifold either
Gotta love it
Love the clean as you go - Words to live by! 😎
Makes the job look better when it’s done. 👍🏽
Thanks for the video content it gives me the fever to work on my 69.
Glad to hear.
George you are truly a VW guru. Thanks for all of your amazing and knowledgeable work. Looking forward to the next updated video on this bug!
I appreciate that!
Previous owners thought it was an ‘04 Accord. 😄 Folks want vintage VWs but don’t understand maintenance. It’s in good hands with you brotha!

The struggle for us air cooled techs is real. 👊🏽
Very clean, glad it’s in good hands brother!
Me too!
Going through a similar “tune up” at the moment.
you have such an awesome channel. new friend here. Keep buggin. 😮❤
👊🏽
Very informed & inteligant work bud.....
Good video, I did wonder if you were going to push it out and tell the owner to come and get it.😂
Never have never will 👊🏽👍🏽
Nice job , me owning any vw my gear box and engine was always cleaned and checked for leaks..

All the cleaning will happen when we pull motor and transmission. 👍🏽
Love your work !
Thank you!

Trying to teach all the DIY guys that I can. 👊🏽
Awesome work George. I love it. Dual 40's would be perfect on there
I think so too!
Hope you show how to do the one-piece boots in an episode!
For sure. Wide 5 Aaron has a good video on them.
Nice work buddy
Thanks 👍
"Carb is a cheap aftermarket future doorstop." 😂😅

Fan is fine. The muffler does touch the caliper at full drop. This car rides extremely low. It’s nowhere near it while driving. Good eye. 👍🏽
Never easy till it's over .
Same with welding it's only a little hole .Till you start digging around.
As crusty as apple pie .
🤣🤣

There a a lot of factors. Number one is the person themselves. I’ve learned who I can work with and who I won’t work with.

Oh no. It was supercharged. I’d assume a Kompressor Haus kit.
Oh that's right you did mention the super charger in the video. I've never seen one of those. @@the_Wagen
what a nightmare! Those carbies are junk, put one of mine in the bin.
Sometimes Chinese is all one can afford at the time ;)
Is it really saving if you have to replace it? 🤔👊🏽👍🏽
How can the owner drive it with that much gear oil and motor oil leaking! 😮 that is not a simple “tune up”.
My latest video covers the much needed repairs.
