Replacing Push Lock Oil Lines on a 1961 VW Bus
มุมมอง 7582 หลายเดือนก่อน
This week we are doing some preventative maintenance on a 1961 VW Bus. I was swapping the Fuel line when I noticed the oil lines looked just as cracked as the fuel line. This bus is full flowed with a filter and an additional external oil cooler. I decided to change the oil lines before we had a catastrophic failure to the engine. That may seem over dramatic, but a blown oil line will kill an e...

Is sema open to the public?
No. It’s for people in the automotive industry. It’s open to the public on Friday with one day passes.
Couldn’t make out the name of the tool used to straighten out the tabs. What is it called and a place to purchase them?
Knipex flat jaw pliers. Look them up.
@ thanks!
Great vid and tips on the tabs to help prevent breakage!
As usual great tutorial
How do you turn the steering rods of a lowered T1 bus through the bottom of the wheel side instead of through the top side so that they no longer touch the chassis when compressing? It is a mystery to me how this can be solved in the best and safest way. I hope you could solve this mystery for me
I use a tapered ream to “flip” the tie rod. You then need to use the later larger tie rod. You can also drill it out with a 5/8” bit and use the drop in sleeve that adds the proper taper. I’ll see about doing a spindle video with Michael at DubFab.
How about one with your favorite upgrades to bugs and buses
Good idea. 👊🏽
Can you do a video, on how to degree a cam? Either stock, or aftermarket cam. Sorry, If I have mention this already.
I don’t build engines but I have a good friend who does. I’ll have to collaborate on a motor video.
Nice job and information. I always end up with a few band aids, when I do that job.😕
I learned that lesson once 😖🤣
Couldn’t agree more. Great detail, says like it is and if you ask George a question he responds. It’s probably one of my favourite TH-cam channels 👍🏼
👊🏽
Back at ya bud👊🏼
Love the vids george keep them coming
🙌🏽
Can a ground cable mess you around? Does the thickness of the cable be a spesific thicknesss
I upgrade my Alternator power cable to a 4ga wire. I have a 4 ga ground on my engine to chassis. Along with a Wolfsburg West factory ground strap on my battery.
Do they make a kit for a single port 1600
Not sure. I bet it could be done easily.
Great video. I have a Jeffries Kyote buggy and the back deck is not cut for the scoop. I am concerned about the clearance when the throttle is wide-open because I have limited distance from the fan shroud to the rear deck of the body. Do you know what that distance might be? If not the GB linkage, I am going to look at the Vintage Speed linkage. Thanks
I’d estimate about 3” away from the shroud. The vintage speed is a nice linkage.
That skid plate looks beefy. Is it 1/4”, or 3/16”?
3/16” I believe.
Nice job, very clean set up? I’m pretty new to air cools, just got a 64. Is this set up good for a stock 1600?
It will work on a stock engine. I’d verify that it doesn’t push past the needle seat and overflow the carb before fire up.
@ I understand making sure it doesn’t overflow the carb, but not sure what you mean that it doesn’t push past the needle seat. Are talking about the fuel gauge needle?
Make sure when the pump is on it’s not overflowing the float bowl and pouring gas into the engine.
The needle seat is what turns the fuel flow on and off of the carb.
@@the_Wagen oh oh, got it now. Thanks
🎉
Great vid! Very informative for this old buck learning new stuff!
I’m still learning too. 👍🏽
Use gasoline to clean the grease build up.
i love your content and i want to say thank you. i ended up running a limiting strap on the shock mounts for cornering and jacking. this is help out a lot so the boots don’t over flex and leak. also helped that abrupt roll in a corner.
Thank you 👊🏽
Great stuff George, another add I do is add a little black sikaflex under the clamp surfaces as Ive had them leak from the ends too. Some of these clamps are rubbish and don't put enough even clamping pressure around the tube.
@@DemopVWgarage yes; I add sealant there as well. Great tips.
That’s a good idea!
I like the Febi Bilstein brand that say Volkswagen. I know that in Brazil they are making an improved version with better composites and thicker section. Thank you for the great tips. I also do the seam at 1 on the left side and 11 on the right side. I’ve also done them with the car on its weight on ramps. That gives me access underneath while keeping the axles fairly straight.
Febi Bilstein, used to be way better, now you will be lucky to get 5 years out of a set before the rubber goes bad!! Just changed a set over yesterday and the rubber was hard and cracked. Vewib are the go to ones these days way better quality rubber.
Thanks for watching.
Don't get skimpy
Nice, never really thought about the bolt under the spring plate.
Russell is full of useful tips. I’ll have to get him in a video in the future.
What’s the part number for the black fuel filter ?
racing power company R9212BK
@@the_Wagen thanks that’s in Canada, worked out great !
Dude this is an amazing video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Driving fast does not mean reliable.. a 36 40 and 1500hp are reliable motors, boosting air-cooled motors always spell trouble, very costly and seem to be a bit dangerous if your not a mechanic.
I’ve got a 2332cc in my bus that roadtrips regularly. It’s as reliable as any stock engine I’ve owned. It’s more dependent on the way it’s all put together. We did not do this for reliability, we did this to have fun in this car. 👍🏽
That ghia and buggy are sick!!!
👍👍
As someone still into the scene that frequently saw the original in Southend/Leigh this was an awesome tribute to see in person at #onecrazyweekend
I never saw the original. How did we do?
Red on red! Holy cow!! Top work from everybody!!
Thanks for the shout out and kind words, great job on the finished product.
this was such a blast .. a real throwback to when we were just teenagers building cars on a budget and regular … loved it
Call me crazy, but I kind of liked the old color and red engine bay combination. I know this is an 80’s style build, but I was never a fan of painted trim. I spray painted the trim on my first Beetle black because I didn’t have any money. That was about 1983.
We were making a replica so we had to follow the same recipe.
What a great time. Wish I could’ve been there to help in some way. Congrats to all involved!
This is awesome work but I can’t understand why this is a transitory paint job. Why not do it right only once. I understand this is the owner’s decision but it seems like a waste of effort, time and resources.
The owner would disagree with you. He had an absolute blast helping with the build and driving the build.
@@the_Wagen I agree you guys did an awesome job but I was under the impression that once it gets to Scotland it’s being taken apart again and redone which is the reason behind my comment. Is that accurate?
That was the initial plan. It may stay as is. It’s up to the owner now. 👍🏽
this is staying as it is now
@@the_Wagen I believe it is perfect. I would only treat the undercarriage.
Ghia battery's in engine compartment big No here.... relocated and clean....❤
His pan was different than others I’ve worked on. The battery would not fit under the seat. She is secure , in the factory location, and it looks clean. 👊🏽
Hi I took some photos of your Bus Thursday night at Orleans show, it is going in my Calendar 2025. For description what year is it? people get pissy if I get this wrong!!
62 camper 2332cc BBS LM wheels👍🏽
Awesome video guys. Did you do anything to the distributor to stop the full advance? I thought with a supercharger you couldn’t have it advancing to much?
No. We have it set at 28* full advance.
@@the_Wagen sweet as thanks for the reply.
Great video I appreciate your attention to detail!
G'day, Another awesome video. I love your work man. Q. The battery tray. Would that fit in a 63 beetle. If so where did you purchase it. So thanks for sharing the knowledge man ✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia.
Look up my first video. It’s all the details on the battery box and our mods.
@@the_Wagen Thanks man ✌️
I want to thank you for putting these videos out. I have learned so much from watching them. I really like how you explain what you're doing and why. Thanks again, and keep putting them out. Big fan!
Thank you. 👊🏽🙌🏽
Top notch work!
Love it GT! I know you’re glad it’s over, but you guys killed it. Jobs well done! I also appreciate Bill wearing his T3A shirt for the tear down.🙌🏼
It was crazy hard. But I was in good company on the painting end.
I love this channel! It’s a master class on attention to detail. This is how everyone should be doing it. This channel should be required watching for any mechanic, builder, electrician, or anyone working with their hands…especially if working on other people’s stuff. My OCD approves!
The wheel studs are a great addition. Who sells them!?
I received them from S& S along with all the other parts. Go back to part 2 to get their full name.
@@the_Wagen Thanks!
I like the empi studs on the drums. They make life so much easier when changing tires.
Just heard about this channel from Off Road Buggy.... 😃👍
Welcome!
Think the steering box clamp position is different from Beetle to Ghia. Angle to cabin is different.
25degrees according to the book.
The difference is in the position of the bottom securing clamp. One direction is Beetle, one is Ghia.
Great idea using an old frame head to hold the beam while working on it👍
That’s how I built beams in the past.
