My neighbor Yia Yia next door used to invite me after school to come to her house. She served me a tiny cup of Greek coffee, some Kourabiedes, a slice of candied orange peel, a glass of water and a linen napkin on a little round table by my chair. She had the same. She was really teaching me good manners and how to be sociable and to converse with another person. She was so wonderful and kind.
Yiayias are the best. I was in Istanbul for a week the summer before last after doing an archaeology project in Cappadocia and the hotel was run by a Greek woman and her children and grandchildren. She had never met me before but she looked out for me like I was family- I would wave to her at the front desk when I was going out and she would say “Oh, Zoe! Do you have your bus pass? Do you have enough sunscreen? Today you are going to Galata, yes?”

A good way to learn a language is to read the newspapers.. .Get some Greek newspapers. And read them out loud.. to hear your voice
I think the best thing that can really help you is stand up comedy channels. The sound part can be tricky tho... If you can't understand them, then move on to the next one. Have fun with it so you can get the language, the sense of humor ( in some cases) and the Greek culture as well (the later can be like a slap in your face )... Because in some cases we can be (our mindset) from 2020 B.C.
A piece of advice : First of all you have to focus on grammar and then the vocabulary. And if you want to manage to learn Greek or another language is better to practice 15 minutes every day(really studying )than 4 hours per week .

Some of them were pretty accurate but others are completely inaccurate (e.g. a greek grandma would never tell you that you're too fat. Because you're never fat enough)

I lived in Greece for 10 years. My Bassett became bilingual. Later besides my 1/2 Greek kids I also adopted some Russian boys. They know all the foods, Kokinisto, anginares a la Polita, etc. but also learned certain expressions that I must have picked up from my late husband like "αντε ρε" or "grigora" or anything that I always use in Greek because I didn't know what to call it in English. Like "bring me a lekani"

My mom is Greek and Italian and we really do bring food everywhere. XD I am dying. When she was growing up her dad was a farmer and he had plants everywhere around the house. He grew every kind of vegetable in existence. I also love how my mom's private phone conversations are incredibly loud.
