I grew up in Astoria NY (nuff said). Have had the joy of knowing many friends’ YiaYia’s. Love Greek people and culture. Always warm and loving to me.
I’d visit my Giagia at least once a week until the week she died. I remember her opening the door, giving me a big hug and kiss my two cheeks, asking if all is good and then... always... Are you hungry? What do you want to eat? You have to be hungry!!!

Omg my grandma is from Greece and she is not like this at all 😂 I wish she was! The only exception is the pushing food 🥘 constantly and yes of course quips about weight after the constant feedings. Haha
My friends in Greece had a Pontia housekeeper/nanny, κυρία Χριστίνα, for their third kid. She had very definite views about marriage... The husband in this couple snored really loudly so that his wife couldn’t sleep, and they had started sleeping apart. When kyria Christina found out, she lost it, and told Niki in her half-Pontiaka, “Νίκη, πρόσεχε! Ο Κώστας εν πολλά καλός, εσύ δεν μπορείς να βρεις άλλον σαν ατόν, αλλά ατός επορει να βρει άλλη σαν κι’ εσένα!” (Ευχαριστώ πολύ for your support, κυρία Χριστίνα!)
They just need love, they must not feel lonely...

I am not Greek but i remember my Bubbe would constantly ask me when i was about 16 "Hello little doll, tell me doll do you have a boyfriend" And i reply with "No" and said to me "Listen here doll l, i am not getting younger and neither is your mommy or daddy, i would love to hold my adorable grandbabies before God takes me" But she always loves wine and says "Hey, doll would you like some wine" and i say yes. My Bubbe still always made the best latkes, matzo ball soup, and challah. I missed her. But she is with my older relatives that died in ww2.
Ohhhhh! I miss My Yia-yia so much!!! She'd alwayts have some feta for me when i'd visit and sometimes make some Kourabiedes!!

Yiasou Thespina...my Yiayia from Kypros was called Thespina - my Yiayia from Symi was Yiayia Eleni ...now my mother is Yia-yia Mina [Asimina ]. I am Papouli Nikos from Alexandria ,Egypt - I am called Papouli with the diminuative because only my father will be called Papou ...my granddaughters call me 'Pouli'... my two daughters are married -one has children ...I want the other one to have kids too ...my son Michalis I despare ...[HAAAAAA....HAAAAAA.... you cant Kiwi-ize or Ausi-Ize a Greek ....]....!!!!!!! My Mom is tiny next to my son ...five foot nothing next to his 6 foot plus almost an Euzonas...hey girls hes good looking....HAAAA....HAAAA...HAAAA....try and change us ...just try....we're stubborn ...we had to be with 400 years of Turkos to survive from....Yes the first thing my Mama will ask my son ...is are you hungry and the second is have you found a nice [-Greek-] girl yet...!!!???!!!
