This $300 Street Photography Camera Is Still The GOAT

- This somewhat forgotten about camera included some pretty ground-breaking technology when it was first released. As a result, over 10 years later, this camera is still very capable, even by 2024 standards. And priced at around $300, I think the Olympus OM-D E-M1 is one of the best mirrorless cameras you can buy on a budget.

I think Olympus has a great underrated camera design
I agree!
I had two original E-M1s (still have one of them) and it's all you say it is, and truly is an amazing value for the money today. I have to say, though, that I think the Olympus E-M1 Mk II is probably one of, if not the best, overall bang for the buck used camera available today. It has several major upgrades over the Mk I, including a 20mp sensor, much faster processor, High Res 80Mp capability, and much more. And, clean examples doesn't cost all that much more than the Mk I. It might make for an interesting video if you were to compare the two. Thanks for an excellent presentation.
Bought one last year for a good price. Very happy with it. Great EVF, very fast AF, nice image quality, great IBIS. Nothing to complain about for me, I'm very happy with it.
I'm totaly agree with you way of thinking : old gears still do very good job for a sweat price.
I just received an Olympus e-m5 mk2 in a very good shape for less than 300 euros. It's realy a little Olympus e-m1 mk2, same functions but smaller and more functions than i can use.
Great review! My EM 1 actually arrived today haha 😂 battery is charging while I watched this video. I got it dirt cheap and I can't wait to try it out.
The EM-5 MK II is my all time favorite Olympus Camera. 📷 But the EM-1 is still way ahead of its time. Shame that OM Systems isn’t swinging for the fences in terms of innovation.
From my read of today's camera market OM System is just as innovative as current tech allows, and is still out pacing other makers. They have by far the best IBIS - still - and the most advanced computational photography tech, and the best rated weatherproofing available from anyone. For good or bad, digital cameras are now a relatively mature technology - at least until some breakthrough sensor is developed - and there just aren't the opportunities for "break through" cameras like ten years ago when the likes of the E-M5 and E-M1 really were revolutionary. No one is making such advances anymore, and for that reason.
@@gregfeeler6910 I believe they need a full frame line of this series and the Pen series that can implement some of these cutting edge features. It should utilize the same Leica L mount as Panasonic. A full frame camera, with this type of design, just slightly bigger would be a major hit.
@@AllDay3004 With all respect I strongly disagree - OM System should not add any FF cameras whatsoever. Why not? Well, first, the last thing the world needs is yet another FF camera system. Are there there already not too many such cameras in a shrinking market? Secondly, OM Digital Solutions is the smallest of all the major camera manufactures and simply does not have the resources to spend diluting their brand when they need instead to upgrade the E-M10 and PEN series, and keep leading in technology. They just can't afford to go head-to-head with Nikon/Canon/Sony/Fuji in the FF market. And, thirdly, they are budling a brand around the inherent size and weight advantages of the MFT format, and with their industry-leading environmental sealing, are already the most portable and rugged camera system for any out-of-studio photography. To launch a FF line would be as much as to say "we were lying to you about MFT".
Every format has it's advantages and disadvantages relative to some other format. For me, MFT is a perfect fit and I need and want OMDS to keep the MFT faith as Panasonic certainly isn't. When they used a FF body for the G9II that was a very troubling signal to me that they are not committed enough to MFT to build a proper body for one of their two flagship cameras.
@@AllDay3004 OM Systems joining the L Mount alliance? With their glass it would be huge.
@@free_re_fells one can dream! I just started out in photography and I'm glad I started with Olympus. The E-M1 II is such a great camera. Really only issue I worry about is the sensor size. I'd get a full frame version in a heartbeat
absolutely love the design of this camera
my Fuji X10 now sells more than when I bought it. I have the OMD-EM5 II and its a great camera. Do that next so it will increase in value.
That is because a lot of people really do think that these noisy old sensors produce ' film like ' images. Nothing could be further from the truth. Let them pay three times more than the camera waas worth. When I bought my EM5 MKII I was also looking into teh Fuji X100 T. The price of a minty used one was from MPB or WEX was about £380.00 ~ £415.00. I decided against it as the fixed lens was very limiting for my photography. Now some fool is asking for over grand for a used one on ebay. Good luck to them.
I got the x10 for $175 is a great camera. I own the om-d e1 I got it for $280 and is one of my favorites I like how easy to control it is and how well made it is. I started with Canon then moved to Olympus and Fujifilm.
I own the X100, X100T and X100Vi and xt-2 each camera has its own characteristics. I would consider all premium.
fuji xt1 best
@@Kiflinn Sadly, only to Fuji fans.
@@lensman5762 i use sony, but ive been watching videos about fuji and it seems like a pretty good camera for how old it is
I picked one up at CEX for £190 a couple years ago. aside from a sticky shutter its been absolutely flawless, combine it with a speed booster and its an absolute beast
Hi Tom, I owned this camera, purchased it brand new back in the day. This omd Em1 original has one serious flaw, the left lug will eventually come off when you least expect it. This can cost you more than the camera body alone if a valuable lens is attached. Olympus made up for this design flaw with the much better omd E-M1 mark II in 2017, get that camera instead, you will thank me later.
I’ve just had an E-M1 Mk2 by accident for a few days (was trying to hire the new OM-1 Mk2 but got too excited too quickly and pressed the wrong button).
I’m blown away by how good it is, but what really stood out is how light it is. With the 12-40 f2.8 Pro on the front it came in at 989g vs 1400g for my X-H2 with the 16-55 f2.8, and 1650g for the A7iv with the 24-70 GM.
Image quality is mega for an ‘old’ camera, and whilst it obviously can’t keep up with the 40.2mp sensor in the Fuji, or the AF of the Sony, it packs a hell of a punch for what it costs.
Great review, and given my recent experience, I may just have to pick one up.
Great photos!
I have the E-M5, E-M5ii and E-M1ii. All wonderful in their own way and I still use them regularly.
Is em5 good
@@barrylyons8102 EM5 is a good starter camera into M43 system. Could try looking for the EM5ii as it's slightly better with features.
When I decided a few years back that it was time for a new camera, I wound up with an E-M10 iv. It's not quite an E-M1, but I've no complaints. The biggest thing I find it lacking is weather sealing. I do really like the control layout and ease of quickly accessing key settings. NGL, kinda envious of that switch for the front and rear dials.
When you talk about the older cameras would you also suggest what an average and preferred shutter count would be. I know I would be grateful and I am sure many others would be too.
Great Review. Thanks for that. I bought a used EM1 Mk2 and am very happy with it. For the non Pro Lenses I like using my EM5 Mk3
Got the Mii in January paired with the 12-40mm and it slaps!
This has been my 2nd camera for a year or so now, mainly for climbing or anywhere that i don't want to break my Nikon. It was actually around $200 when I bought it, and has been climbing ever since. Solid camera with an insanely bad menu system. All the updates that have come have really taken the camera way above what the original reviews showed. Video is still pretty rough but I think that's codec related.
I have two of them and they are wonderful and easy to use and walk about with. They are indeed robust. At an airshow I was in the process of changing lenses and a rather large child ran into me at full tilt. The camera came out of my hand and landed on the tarmac on one of the strap lugs and the lens hood of the 40-150 Pro. The hood broke and there was a crack in the body around the lug. The camera and lens both still functioned perfectly. I fixed the crack with two part epoxy to seal the crack and bought a new hood
My first proper camera. Lovely colours and very comfortable to hold.
I'm a big fan of the ergonomics 👌🏻
And the phase detect AF means you can shoot any of that beautiful and fast original 4/3 ZD SHQ glass - if you can find and afford it, and if you can cope with its weight. E-M1 is a serious little camera and a pleasure to use... which surprises me as i prefer to shoot DSLRs.
I just bought one …. have a hunch the files will have a nicer quality than later cameras … it’s built like a tank
what an amazing naming system
Olympus dials are seriously the best.
I tested this camera a short while - finally chose the Samsung NX1, back in the days - but it sits absolutely perfect in the hand :)
Thank you for this video.
You are right about the EMD1. I’ve seen this body at ~$300. Cheap as chips. The body is virtually indestructible. Legendary IBIS. Very pleasing, to my eyes, colors though a bit vibrant vs. accurate.
Instead I purchased an EMD1Mii for $400. For ~$100 more some very important upgrades. My favorite is the PDAF. This body seems a good compromise between price and features. I’m sorry for going yes but………on you. If M43 is a system you want to use or explore, the EMD1 or Mii is an inexpensive way to try the system out. At the prices these bodies are being bought & sold for, you can try the system for a small amount of money. Don’t like it? You can sell these bodies for virtually the same as you bought them for. Plus the Olympus lenses are very good.
Minor gripe about both bodies. The on/off switch is on the left side of the top plate. Olympus ran out of real estate on the right side so where else could they place the on/off switch? That being said, for me, an awkward place to place that switch. Since we only use the switch for on & off it isn’t the end of the world as we know it. No camera is perfect.
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
You can set the 1/2 switch on the right to be the power switch.
This guy makes Garry Fong look 👀 professional 😂.
"Back in the day". I felt like this camera just came out! Apparently it's been 11 years that I've been wanting to buy a camera.
Hi i just saw the video of the lens hood and nd filter and I would like to know where can I buy one ?
My walkaround is a Fuji X100 and my serious cam is a Sony A7. If again I may have gone M43 instead of A7 considering lenses. The only things to consider are low light as wide angle.
I still want to get one of this model. It look very gorgeous back in the day but Olympus is never my top priority to buy though I'd like it on my collection.
I almost went for an E-M1 but was not a fan of the menus as a result of owning an E-M5. After using it a little I have to say Olympus OM-D cameras are pretty great and well ahead of their time. Instead of an E-M1 I ended up with the Pen-F.
Nice! I'm desperate to try out the Pen F - the prices are just a little too high for me at the moment though.
@@TomCalton Absolutely. I found one really cheap as a result of wear on the body, but it was worth the price. Great camera. Hope you can find one soon, would love to know what you think.
Before I committed to M43 from FF I bought an E.M1 to test the waters.
I loved it and decided to buy an E-M1 Mark III and sold off the E-M1. I decision that I regret.
There was something about the RAW file colours that I really loved.
I’m going to have to buy another just as a backup.
@@normstangl3499 There seems to be something about a first generation model. This is why I bought an E-M5 and not the others.
The menus aren't as bad as OP suggest. You get to know them. I needed to keep a PDF copy on my phone for my Canon camera too. The super menu is superb!
It's crazy how Olympus and Fujifilm both had the EXACT same pattern in the 2010s.
2014 : release a camera that is flawed, but recognized as a very good mirrorless camera, with unique features and really good image quality (X-T1 and E-M1)
2016 : release a follow-up to that camera that is fixing ALL the problems that this previous version had, considerably bumped up the image quality, autofocus performance and can now be used in much more serious video production
2018 and beyond : never being able to release a camera that would completely bury the second version (there hasn't been any significant change in image quality between the X-T2 and X-T3, 4 and 5 (even despite the 40MP), same thing about the E-M1mark II : it had a pretty damn good 20MP MFT sensor, and there hasn't been a change in image quality since then. Even the OM-1 mk II still uses a 20MP sensor with very similar noise levels and DR values as the E-M1ii)
2nd gen camera of both brands are becoming actual sweet spots, and the "all I would ever need" camera for a LOT of people while the 1st gen camera gets re-discovered as a forgotten gem.
I have both the X-T1 and 2, I wish I wasn't invested in so much camera systems already otherwise I would have got both the E-M1 and E-M1ii already !
The E-M1 ii seems to be insanely good for the price: weather sealing, dual SD slot, realiable autofocus for video and photography after the last firmware upgrade, the 20MP sensor and a lot of pro features. I'm considering buying a used one. Still can't decide between it and the G9 though, but the PDAF seems very appealing, also it's like 50-100$ cheaper than the G9.

Same here, hindsight that my first good digicam was an Olympus. I spent far too much money on Sony A and E mount cameras and lenses.
I got into Minolta MD lenses and wanted to adapt to modern digicam, but the 1 x +1.1% adaptors were no solution on the A mount.
On the E-mount A6000, hard to get sharp images due to camera/handshake. Looked into options, and Bingo! there was my old friend Olympus.
Bought a used Em5 Mk II and an adaptor. I'm hooked on Olympus M43, enter in the MD focal length and Voila! IBIS on a sweet old Manual Focus lens.
Found a used Em1 mk I for chump change and found a camera that can last me the rest of my life.
I use the Em5 II for product shots and the Em1 for walk around shooting.
It has it's warts, but the Em1 is the MOST comfortable camera I've ever used, even compared to the Sony A700 (nee Minolta 7D).
It just feels right in hand.
Love the „yeah, maybe in your country…“ part 😂
I love micro 4/3rds but wish they had lenses with an aperture ring similar to fugi.
GRIP felt soo good also
Did they sort out the banding issues that happened at high ISO with the E-M5 when using the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 for the E-M1? That's why I had to change to the 14mm 2.5 and the Olympus 17mm 1.8 when I had my E-M5. Recently rebought the E-M5 and unfortunately it's one with the sticky shutter at high shutter speeds. That's okay, I'll just use it in low light with the amazing IBIS :)
One of my two main cameras is my EM5 Mark 2 and I love my Olympus cameras. Much like my Pentax you get alot more for your money than you do with the bigger manufacturers.
I am not sure about the future of the brand though. OM Systems is owned by a company whose business model is more about flipping formerly failing businesses or product divisions and not really about being a serious player in any particular market.
For example they took over the Vaio line of laptops that was formerly Sony. They brought that product line back to profitability but most people barely know that product line is even still around.
Olympus made a tons of impressive cameras, I still don't know why they aren't more popular than bigger brands here in Indonesia, it's just really rare to find E-M1 in good condition for a cheap price. Maybe because most people will go for Canon or Nikon (back in the days, mirrorless aren't really popular in here, the popularity of mirrorless started to rise when Canon released the EOS M3). Mostly the prices for well used EM-1 is around ~400$/IDR 6.500.000, still quite affordable for such crazy specs.
Thank you , massive fan of mark 2 … was curious if mk 1 had a more old fashioned pleasing sensor with those colours…
Olympus changed to CMOS sensors way before the original E-M5 and E-M1 were introduced. I owned examples of the early CCD Four Thirds bodies and most of everything from Olympus & OM Systems since, and in my opinion all this hype about CCD sensors having some special looks is just smoke and mirrors. Any creditable camera company strives for accurate color reproduction irrespective of the sensor in use. None that I know of, certainly no Olympus, were trying to emulate some "film look" as they were striving to advance digital camera technology. Just my thoughts on this. Peace.
Is omd em10 still good to buy? I have found one in secondhandmarket and it's only 70 usd only body (i already have m4/3 and 4/3 lens)
I have talk to seller he said every function are fine except that flash isn't pop up.
buy it!
The FL-LM3 flash unit may fit, I know it works on the EM10 mkii
Got mine a year ago. It's a great camera. JPEGs are great too..
OMD EM1 will always be one of my favorite cameras from Olympus. I loved all their designs and features. I'm still waiting for Om1 mk2 to come down in price. Meanwhile my all time favorite has to go to Olympus Pen F. I sold every camera gear but I will never sell my Pen F.
Great camera
even better when paired with the 12-40 pro lens :)
Nice video, i have 3 EM10 bodies, great cameras
The E-M1 is no doubt an amazing camera. I would however pick the mark ii or iii.
I do a lot of very dark conditions concert photography, where I need high ISO.
With the free software OM Workspace from OM-System, I can use AI Noise Reduction to improve the quality of my high ISO photos to a point, where I don't need expensive photo editing software at all.
But, the AI Noise Reduction in OM Workspace only works with RAW files from the E-M5 iii, E-M1 ii, E-M1 iii, E-M1X, OM-5, OM-1 and OM-1 ii.
I'm currently using an E-M5 iii, and my experiences with the AI Noise Reduction in OM Workspace are so good, I'm saving up for an E-M1 iii in as good condition as possible as it seems to be the best option for my specific needs.
I'm angry with you because i couldn't find this camera at this price here in Brazil!! Kidding lol
Thanks for the content brother!
Olympus cameras look great. The EM5 mk2 with the 17mm f1.8 looks as good as the x100vi.
Olympus / OMDS is underrated
i have a load of cameras and my EM10 gets used all the dang time. It's so tiny and delivers excellent results (provided it's not dark). Favorite camera...
em10ii rocks!
Video: (at 8:54) the HDMI socket is of limited use, the mark one has no real time video feed. It’s for playback only. The mark 2 does have this, I use one as my web cam. First world problems 😅.
But otherwise I agree, the mark one is an awesome camera, it was my daily driver for the last ten years. Great with the wide selection of four thirds and micro four thirds lenses, plus adapted SLR lenses. I upgraded to a mark 3 as my mark one had developed some irritating foibles.
Hello, on your reviews, could you show some photos examples without editing please ? (jpeg strait out from the camera) Cheers o/
16mp is good. I can crop aboud half of the frame and still print sharp a3 size photos. This is very enough for most people.
thanks,bought yesterday for 200 euro
I hope you enjoy it!
I’d spring for the extra cost of the mark ii
Thats what i like about mpb their prices arents as expensive as the other companies
I have a Pen F that I love
Mark 2 even better around £469 ..just bought one from MBP..😎
I want to get EM5 MK II but the audio quality seems to be really bad even with an external mic and it's a dealbreaker for me. If anyone in the comments who has owned it can tell me if it's true or if there's a work around solution I'd appreciate it.
I’ve been tempted to replace my 1st gen E-M1 with new flagships EVERY YEAR throughout the decade, and yet, every time I go out and shoot photos, my E-M1 proved itself that I don’t need to
Unfortunately i sold my m1 mk iii but it was my favorite camera.
I just ordered one. It got here a couple days again. I still have no idea what lens to get. Had to order an Olympus usb cable to update firmware from 4.0-4.6! I’m excited
If you don't mind manual focus, get a $60 ttartisans 25mm f/2. Fun little lens and good quality images. Use that while you figure out which Olympus lens too buy. Or get a kit lens or 2.
I bought a few lenses. 14-42 Panasonic. 45-150 Panasonic. 25 Panasonic. Lastly tried out the yongnuo 45 it’s a decent kit and takes up no room.
$300 in the US $1900 in Australia.
My current setup:
Olympus E-M1 w/ HLD-7 battery grip
Olympus MMF-3 mount adapter
Leica D 14-50 f/2.8-3.5 (the kit lens of the legendary Leica DIGILUX 3)
Olympus VF-4 external EVF (has better colour accuracy than the E-M1 built-in EVF)
This setup is my Dream Camera and still very capable of studio or street photography in 2024.

While the E-M1 is definitely an awesome camera, I'd still say the E-M5 Mark II is better. It's most of the times cheaper and has even better features. The only thing is the E-M1 has phase detect. If you don't see yourself needing phase detect, I'd go to the E-M5 II.
However, if you do need phase detect, E-M1 is one of the best budget(-ish) solutions available.
Cool trail pack camera for its durability and small size. This and the Pentax are the ultimate trail or back pack camera.

I would argue the EM-1 II is the better bet at around 500$.
I just picked up a mkii with 12-40 f2.8 for $750. In mint condition with only 5k on the shutter. You can add a 25mm prime and the 40-150r and be around $1000 and have a really versatile kit that fits in a lunchbox.

Somehow I was never happy with my M43 equipment (OM-10 MkIII, EM-5 Mk II, ...). I always had the feeling that the color of the images looked "flat", skies had a tendency to look cyan, dynamic range and low light capabilities were limited. Yes, you can partially compensate that in raw editing, but my Sony, Nikon and Canon full frame cameras never had these issues. All in all I prefer having lower noise, better color and more dynamic range - even if I have to carry heavier equipment. So sorry, but M43 is definitively not for me.
Nothing wrong with the color. Never had a cyan sky. Maybe you just had a dud.
How to tell an influencer try to mark up the second hand market so they can get rid of their old camera at an insane price.
Tempting! Mk ii has 50 fps with tracking autofocus and auto exposure, impressive. Heck of a price drop from original.
Problem of the Olympus cameras... Not much reason to upgrade within the range 😉. Got an em10 mark1 and every em10 and em5 after it made me go 'mweh'. The em1 was the only one to do it (got em1 mark3 now, ditching my slt65 and a7mark2).
Love the video, dislike that Filmora is the sponsor of the video.
Can we just keep this to ourselves? this type of videos only help jack up the prices 😂

Mpb is overpriced now. Looking at a Sony a7cii body and it’s more expensive used than buying direct from Sony. Wtaf…
I still want to get mad. It’s just fun.
Pls stop hyping Olympus. I love my secrets secret. I always love the disapproving look of a Fuji fanboy. And you forgot to tell that lenses are light and cheap because all the electronics are in the body.
Uuuuuhhhh.... you used the words "Micro Four Thirds" and "stronger than ever" in one sentenced! Next shitstorm incoming... ;)
Aye mate have you seen the prices, blah, blah 😊. I’ve got one of those EM-1 cameras that suffered the EM-1 rear dial death. After a bit of to and fro with Olympus, their technical support had the camera picked up, repaired and returned within a week 😮. Also, I originally bought the camera second hand but registered it nevertheless. As a former technical editor I really think you should have said a few words about the often unreliable rear dial. It was and is a known issue and not mentioning it might lead to a lot of disappointment, not to mention the irreparable damage to your reputation and credibility as a reviewer 😂. There’s nothing wrong with flagging the downsides as long as it’s fair and factual. Also, how very dare you lump me in with the social media crowd. My photography features in wedding albums and on the walls in exhibitions. I’ve even had a photograph appear in the early days of Olympus Magazine. But apart from all that, thank you for the review. ❤
Thanks for the comment. Though, the mistake you've made is assuming I have any credibility to diminish in the first place.

16 MP for 300 Used is a bit too much imo. There are definitely cheaper caneras with more mp from brands like nikon and sony on mpb.
If you can't get good photos out of a camera with 16 megapixels, the problem is not the camera.
I can get an 48mp camera from Aliexpress for £52.39. Will that be better than this Olympus?
Name three of these alternatives...also, how much will you pay for lenses?
@@StephenStrangways Im talking about the mp to price ratio, chill teh fuck out lmao...
@@wevved please look at my other comment where I list some alternatives to @bingbong4848
I think this is not worth the trouble.
Looking at the photo quality and the terrible colors, i think this doesn`t cut it anymore.
SIR
PLEASE
STOP IT
I AM TRYING
TO REPLACE MINE
WHICH IS BROKEN
YOU ARE DRIVING UP PRICES
PLEASE STOP
Sure. I'll give up 4 years of hard work, dedication and, what is now, my full time job, just because you think me making these videos has the power to dicate global camera prices, without actually offering a shred of evidence to corroborate your theory. Good one. Seems rational. 🤡🤣
This is nothing but romanticizing an old bygone product. While the features were great, especially focus stacking, the image quality is borderline useless after iso 1600 unless you spend hours recovering shadows and detail in LR. My old Nikon d800 had miles ahead image quality than this guy. Sold off after 6 months.
proof?
