  • This somewhat forgotten about camera included some pretty ground-breaking technology when it was first released. As a result, over 10 years later, this camera is still very capable, even by 2024 standards. And priced at around $300, I think the Olympus OM-D E-M1 is one of the best mirrorless cameras you can buy on a budget.

      From my read of today's camera market OM System is just as innovative as current tech allows, and is still out pacing other makers. They have by far the best IBIS - still - and the most advanced computational photography tech, and the best rated weatherproofing available from anyone. For good or bad, digital cameras are now a relatively mature technology - at least until some breakthrough sensor is developed - and there just aren't the opportunities for "break through" cameras like ten years ago when the likes of the E-M5 and E-M1 really were revolutionary. No one is making such advances anymore, and for that reason.

      @@gregfeeler6910 I believe they need a full frame line of this series and the Pen series that can implement some of these cutting edge features. It should utilize the same Leica L mount as Panasonic. A full frame camera, with this type of design, just slightly bigger would be a major hit.

    • @gregfeeler6910

      @@AllDay3004 With all respect I strongly disagree - OM System should not add any FF cameras whatsoever. Why not? Well, first, the last thing the world needs is yet another FF camera system. Are there there already not too many such cameras in a shrinking market? Secondly, OM Digital Solutions is the smallest of all the major camera manufactures and simply does not have the resources to spend diluting their brand when they need instead to upgrade the E-M10 and PEN series, and keep leading in technology. They just can't afford to go head-to-head with Nikon/Canon/Sony/Fuji in the FF market. And, thirdly, they are budling a brand around the inherent size and weight advantages of the MFT format, and with their industry-leading environmental sealing, are already the most portable and rugged camera system for any out-of-studio photography. To launch a FF line would be as much as to say "we were lying to you about MFT".
      Every format has it's advantages and disadvantages relative to some other format. For me, MFT is a perfect fit and I need and want OMDS to keep the MFT faith as Panasonic certainly isn't. When they used a FF body for the G9II that was a very troubling signal to me that they are not committed enough to MFT to build a proper body for one of their two flagship cameras.

    I had two original E-M1s (still have one of them) and it's all you say it is, and truly is an amazing value for the money today. I have to say, though, that I think the Olympus E-M1 Mk II is probably one of, if not the best, overall bang for the buck used camera available today. It has several major upgrades over the Mk I, including a 20mp sensor, much faster processor, High Res 80Mp capability, and much more. And, clean examples doesn't cost all that much more than the Mk I. It might make for an interesting video if you were to compare the two. Thanks for an excellent presentation.

      I've owned both, and prefer the original. II had too many false positives and worse IQ. The colors in the viewfinder weren't accurate to what was being captured, either, even after adjustment. A big issue for video.

    • @BlueBomberTurbo

      @@gregfeeler6910 Hmmm, I tried using a pair at some weddings, and they just kept missing the target, at least 30% of the time. No matter what I set the AF sensitivity or AF point/shape/tracking to. Using Olympus 12-40/2.8 and Panasonic 35-200/2.8 V1. Also, the camera has a terrible color cast in the shadows in as little as 2 stops at base ISO, and it comes through SOOC at around ISO 6400, RAW or JPG. Very ugly color that can't be fixed without jumping through lots of hoops. An absolute deal killer for volume work.
      This isn't a lemon, either, as I've asked on mu-43, and checked samples throughout the internet, and they all, and really ANY 20MP m4/3 sensor ever, have heavy shadow color casts. It's why I gave up the system, because the superior (in IQ, at least) 16MP sensors died out. They weren't perfect with color either, but you could easily solve the consistent color cast they had with a simple EXIF edit. The 20MP sensors have rotating color casts that change every few ISOs or even every ISO, in the higher ranges. OG E-M1, though, had clean color throughout.
      The OG also has cleaner DR as far as you can push it, close to APS-C of the time, and isn't any worse at high ISO. Images are able to be easily edited without worrying about odd colors showing up. The only other recent m4/3 camera to come close is the G9 II, which acts similarly, but has faster speed and higher overall quality. The same sensor should be in the GH7, as well.

    Hi Tom, I owned this camera, purchased it brand new back in the day. This omd Em1 original has one serious flaw, the left lug will eventually come off when you least expect it. This can cost you more than the camera body alone if a valuable lens is attached. Olympus made up for this design flaw with the much better omd E-M1 mark II in 2017, get that camera instead, you will thank me later.

    Olympus made a tons of impressive cameras, I still don't know why they aren't more popular than bigger brands here in Indonesia, it's just really rare to find E-M1 in good condition for a cheap price. Maybe because most people will go for Canon or Nikon (back in the days, mirrorless aren't really popular in here, the popularity of mirrorless started to rise when Canon released the EOS M3). Mostly the prices for well used EM-1 is around ~400$/IDR 6.500.000, still quite affordable for such crazy specs.

    It's crazy how Olympus and Fujifilm both had the EXACT same pattern in the 2010s.
    2014 : release a camera that is flawed, but recognized as a very good mirrorless camera, with unique features and really good image quality (X-T1 and E-M1)
    2016 : release a follow-up to that camera that is fixing ALL the problems that this previous version had, considerably bumped up the image quality, autofocus performance and can now be used in much more serious video production
    2018 and beyond : never being able to release a camera that would completely bury the second version (there hasn't been any significant change in image quality between the X-T2 and X-T3, 4 and 5 (even despite the 40MP), same thing about the E-M1mark II : it had a pretty damn good 20MP MFT sensor, and there hasn't been a change in image quality since then. Even the OM-1 mk II still uses a 20MP sensor with very similar noise levels and DR values as the E-M1ii)
    2nd gen camera of both brands are becoming actual sweet spots, and the "all I would ever need" camera for a LOT of people while the 1st gen camera gets re-discovered as a forgotten gem.
    I have both the X-T1 and 2, I wish I wasn't invested in so much camera systems already otherwise I would have got both the E-M1 and E-M1ii already !

      Same here, hindsight that my first good digicam was an Olympus. I spent far too much money on Sony A and E mount cameras and lenses.
      I got into Minolta MD lenses and wanted to adapt to modern digicam, but the 1 x +1.1% adaptors were no solution on the A mount.
      On the E-mount A6000, hard to get sharp images due to camera/handshake. Looked into options, and Bingo! there was my old friend Olympus.
      Bought a used Em5 Mk II and an adaptor. I'm hooked on Olympus M43, enter in the MD focal length and Voila! IBIS on a sweet old Manual Focus lens.
      Found a used Em1 mk I for chump change and found a camera that can last me the rest of my life.
      I use the Em5 II for product shots and the Em1 for walk around shooting.

    The big thing I think about the Olympus cameras is many offered IBIS, back when most APSC and FF cameras (mainly because they were DSLRs) did not. And even Sony's competing a6000 line didn't have IBIS until the release of the a6300 series and a6500 series, so it was a big spec that a lot of people liked because it wasn't found that easiy on most cameras at the time. Apart from that, it's a great little camera and the IBIS at last brings me back to the Pentaxes I was using a decade ago.

    Thank you for this video.
    You are right about the EMD1. I’ve seen this body at ~$300. Cheap as chips. The body is virtually indestructible. Legendary IBIS. Very pleasing, to my eyes, colors though a bit vibrant vs. accurate.
    Instead I purchased an EMD1Mii for $400. For ~$100 more some very important upgrades. My favorite is the PDAF. This body seems a good compromise between price and features. I’m sorry for going yes but………on you. If M43 is a system you want to use or explore, the EMD1 or Mii is an inexpensive way to try the system out. At the prices these bodies are being bought & sold for, you can try the system for a small amount of money. Don’t like it? You can sell these bodies for virtually the same as you bought them for. Plus the Olympus lenses are very good.
    Minor gripe about both bodies. The on/off switch is on the left side of the top plate. Olympus ran out of real estate on the right side so where else could they place the on/off switch? That being said, for me, an awkward place to place that switch. Since we only use the switch for on & off it isn’t the end of the world as we know it. No camera is perfect.

    I’ve just had an E-M1 Mk2 by accident for a few days (was trying to hire the new OM-1 Mk2 but got too excited too quickly and pressed the wrong button).
    I’m blown away by how good it is, but what really stood out is how light it is. With the 12-40 f2.8 Pro on the front it came in at 989g vs 1400g for my X-H2 with the 16-55 f2.8, and 1650g for the A7iv with the 24-70 GM.
    Image quality is mega for an ‘old’ camera, and whilst it obviously can’t keep up with the 40.2mp sensor in the Fuji, or the AF of the Sony, it packs a hell of a punch for what it costs.
    Great review, and given my recent experience, I may just have to pick one up.

    I got the E-M1 II for about 450€ used and I absolutely love it. Compared to the Mk I it has 4K30 Video as well as 1080p60, so that was a big plus for me.
    Otherwise most of what you had to say about the Mk I is also true for the Mk II. It's just a great camera with a great ecosystem around it.

    When I decided a few years back that it was time for a new camera, I wound up with an E-M10 iv. It's not quite an E-M1, but I've no complaints. The biggest thing I find it lacking is weather sealing. I do really like the control layout and ease of quickly accessing key settings. NGL, kinda envious of that switch for the front and rear dials.

At an airshow I was in the process of changing lenses and a rather large child ran into me at full tilt. The camera came out of my hand and landed on the tarmac on one of the strap lugs and the lens hood of the 40-150 Pro. The hood broke and there was a crack in the body around the lug. The camera and lens both still functioned perfectly. I fixed the crack with two part epoxy to seal the crack and bought a new hood

      Olympus changed to CMOS sensors way before the original E-M5 and E-M1 were introduced. I owned examples of the early CCD Four Thirds bodies and most of everything from Olympus & OM Systems since, and in my opinion all this hype about CCD sensors having some special looks is just smoke and mirrors. Any creditable camera company strives for accurate color reproduction irrespective of the sensor in use. None that I know of, certainly no Olympus, were trying to emulate some "film look" as they were striving to advance digital camera technology. Just my thoughts on this. Peace.

    I am not sure about the future of the brand though. OM Systems is owned by a company whose business model is more about flipping formerly failing businesses or product divisions and not really about being a serious player in any particular market.
    For example they took over the Vaio line of laptops that was formerly Sony. They brought that product line back to profitability but most people barely know that product line is even still around.

    The E-M1 is no doubt an amazing camera. I would however pick the mark ii or iii.
    I do a lot of very dark conditions concert photography, where I need high ISO.
    With the free software OM Workspace from OM-System, I can use AI Noise Reduction to improve the quality of my high ISO photos to a point, where I don't need expensive photo editing software at all.
    But, the AI Noise Reduction in OM Workspace only works with RAW files from the E-M5 iii, E-M1 ii, E-M1 iii, E-M1X, OM-5, OM-1 and OM-1 ii.
    I'm currently using an E-M5 iii, and my experiences with the AI Noise Reduction in OM Workspace are so good, I'm saving up for an E-M1 iii in as good condition as possible as it seems to be the best option for my specific needs.

    Somehow I was never happy with my M43 equipment (OM-10 MkIII, EM-5 Mk II, ...). I always had the feeling that the color of the images looked "flat", skies had a tendency to look cyan, dynamic range and low light capabilities were limited. Yes, you can partially compensate that in raw editing, but my Sony, Nikon and Canon full frame cameras never had these issues. All in all I prefer having lower noise, better color and more dynamic range - even if I have to carry heavier equipment. So sorry, but M43 is definitively not for me.
