    Schluter is the ultimate company. They make everything out of plastic, and sell it for the price of diamonds.
    Been tiling for 20 years, and the only customer I had that made an issue out of cold floors didn't own a pair of slippers. 😀

      Heated floors are standard it Norway, especially on bathrooms.

      @@Faddnn isnt living in Norway pretty much the same as living on an iceberg year round? If so that is understandable. But here in America heated floors are just for people who have money and don't know what to spend it on. It's definitely not considered a necessity.

      @@roberthelmick9574 Nope, it gives much better comfort all year round, can dry up the floor and hit the house in the winter. Been doing this for at least 50 years and the latest 10-20 years it as been more common to do it in all every floor in the house, not just floors with tiles. It is not common to walk with shoes or anything if you are home in a Norwegian home.

    I believe your suppose to wipe the floor down first and lightly with a damp rag. This helps with moisture being pulled from mortar.

    One little mistake I noticed during the Ditra membrane installation: thin-set was combed directly to the concrete instead of being buttered, which ensures 100% bonding of substrates- the technique I learned attending Schluter training.

      Yes you are corect material should be troweled on wiyh flat edge of trowel first with sufficient force ,this is cslled burning material to floor then troweld out with Ditra notch trowel , i also use a 30 lb, rolled to set Ditra into Unmodified material

    I wish this was available when I did my bathroom. I had to install the mats, then pour the self leveling concrete, then install the Ditra.
    I want to do the other bathroom in my house now. Damn!

    Mike can you run the electric part of this off an existing circuit? Example connecting power of a switch or plug near by? Does it HAVE to be a dedicated circuit? It is very difficult to get a new circuit from my box to the bathroom due to attic space.

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there. A dedicated circuit is recommended for each application, but a circuit supplying one or more fixed room heaters may be used, as long as its rating does not exceed 30 amperes, that the total current from all branch circuits does not exceed 80% of the circuit breaker limit, and the branch circuit cable reaching the thermostat junction box is of the same conductor size as the main circuit. So, a switch or plug wouldn't work, but a fixed heater could possibly be shared.

    I have a red light going off on my teacher heat system panel, had a guy tell me that if you use a wire nut on the ground wire and the braided ground wire that it doesn't hold right and it may make the light keep blinking or the GFCI blink? I run the heat all day. It runs fine, gets to temperature and at some point of the day it turns itself off or at least trips. Is that something that can happen with using a wire on the ground wire?

    Can I use regular ditra as initial layer instead of plywood or will this regular ditra plastic melt or deform?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmmm... that wouldn't be in-line with our Technical Handbook. We do not recommend using Ditra as the initial layer. Here's our Handbook for more info: sccpublic.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/sys-master/images/h47/h7c/8986876280862/DITRA-HEAT%20Installation%20Handbook.pdf

    Funny how he says put the cable down in ten minutes and do tile right away. More like run cable for 10 minutes, rip it up, re run it, partially rip it up, run it again and then wait for electrical inspector to look at it and then tile. That’s how it is in Ontario anyways.

    Can you put the ditra heat under a washer dryer in a garage to keep the system warm?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nathan, No, the heating cables should never be placed under such structures--when there is no space for the cables to breathe, excessive heat will build up in these confined spaces and may cause cable overheating.

    How do you waterproof the joins between the mat?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here you go!
      sccpublic.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/sys-master/images/h38/h3f/9007361359902/Shower%20System%20Installation%20Handbook.pdf
      1. At the joints, fill the cut-back cavities with Schluter SET, Schluter ALL-SET, Schluter FAST-SET, or unmodified thin-set mortar, approximately 8" (203 mm) wide, centered over the joint.
      2. Comb additional Schluter SET, Schluter ALL-SET, Schluter FAST-SET, or unmodified thin-set mortar over the joint using a 1/4" x 3/16" (6 mm x 5 mm) V-notched trowel or the Schluter®-KERDI trowel, which features a 1/8" x 1/8" (3 mm x 3 mm) square-notched design.
      3. Using the flat side of the trowel, firmly press the 5" (127 mm)-wide Schluter®-KERDI-BAND into the mortar to ensure 100% coverage and to remove excess mortar and air pockets.
      4. At all wall junctions, apply KERDI-BAND as described in steps 1-3, ensuring a minimum of 2" overlap on to DITRA/DITRA-XL.
      Notes: KERDI-BAND must overlap DITRA and DITRA-XL at seams and at floor/wall transitions by a minimum of 2" (50 mm) in order to maintain waterproof integrity. In some applications the vertical section of the floor/wall transition will not accept a bond to Schluter SET, Schluter ALL-SET, Schluter FAST-SET, or unmodified thin-set mortar. Connections to such elements can be achieved using Schluter®-KERDI-FIX or suitable trowel-applied waterproofing materials, such as those that require atmospheric moisture to cure (e.g., urethane sealant).
      For complete installation guidelines and warranty criteria please refer to the downloadable Schluter®-DITRA Installation Handbook and view the step-by-step installation videos available below.

    Would a large area rug over heat the system and cause it the fail?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there! This is taken from our handbook: rea rugs are not recommended over the DITRA-HEAT system, but if used, they shall have an insulating R-value not greater than 1 (Rsi not greater than 0.18). The area rugs shall not be located on top of where the floor temperature sensor is placed, as it will otherwise reduce the heat efficiency. Also, do not place furniture or mats over the floor temperature sensor. They can act as insulation and raise the floor temperature reading at the thermostat. This may cause the heating to turn off before the remainder of the floor reaches the desired temperature.
      Hope it helps!

    why do we need to keep it 8" away from any other heat source?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Steve. Keeping DITRA-HEAT heating cables 8" away from heating sources is due to requirements from electrical codes.

    Do you notch back butter the tile and the floor? I swear I seen this in this video.

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi David,
      Thanks for your question! Here is what our handbook recommends:
      Fill the cut-back cavities with Schluter SET™, Schluter ALL-SET™, Schluter FAST-SET™, or unmodified thin-set mortar and comb additional mortar over the matting using a trowel that is appropriate for the size of the tile. For large-format tiles, e.g., 12" x 12" (305 mm x 305 mm) and larger, back-buttering the tiles with a skim coat of thin-set mortar is a useful way to help ensure proper coverage.
