Battle for Middle Earth is the all-time best RTS game ever. Best mechanics and obviously it's based on Lord of the Rings. The trampling mechanic for the horse units is second to none.
I will give that title to Red Alert 2 Yuri’s Revenge. I’m a big fan of RTS and I also played RoTWK and the reason why I didn’t put that game at the top is because you can become heavily reliant on defence. Build a bunch of walls, put tower and catapults on each 2nd block and you’re pretty much invincible. Also money is unlimited so as long as you have farms in the back, you’re good. I even built my base into the enemy camp and push forward using the walls as offence. Yuri’s revenge on the other hand FORCES you to go on the offence. Super weapons like nukes and weather storm will mess your base up and requires tactics and strategy to cut those super weapons down. Every enemy has a unique counter unlike the generic “spears good against horses, archers good against soldiers etc”. For example, if the enemy is Yuri, one of their super weapons is to turn infantry into hulks. They’re very strong against tanks and buildings. And if you’re Allies, one of your biggest strength is the GI(soldiers that can deploy and pull out a machine gun that does a lot of damage to tanks and ground infantries) and you can deploy them anywhere to defend your base (or attack). Yuri’s genetic mutator directly counters the GI by turning your own troops against you. Another example, prism tanks are really good for long range attacks like buildings and infantry but they’re weak against any other attacks. Playing against those requires agressive defences like rocketeers which are flying gunners. Oh yeah, Yuri’s revenge has 3 types of troops: ground, air, and water (also underwater) troops. BFME only has 1 with the occasional flying heroes and if we’re talking about the second game, the ships are just really bland in terms of variety. Also in terms of money, you have ore trucks that need to go mine ores, and they run out. You can’t hide behind your defences and get infinite money. There’s just so many strategy in Yuri’s revenge. Another one is the high ground. You want to build your defences on high grounds because they have a longer range and tanks can’t hit them if they’re at the bottom (makes sense since they can’t aim high). Theres also civilian buildings that you can put your soldiers in. And I can keep going and going. Yuri’s revenge is simple in its mechanics where each troop doesn’t have a million of different spells like Warcraft 3, but extremely complex if you dive deeper and face harder adversaries. If you’re an RTS fan, give it a try. This is the only multiplayer game that I’m playing with friends because of how good it is. Every game is different and sometimes we do 2v6 which gets very intense. Imagine 6 nukes on your base, hence why being offensive is important
If you’re looking for day 9 content to consume, he has a great “mostly walking” show where him and two game dev friends play through old school point and click adventure games like King’s Quest. They can be kind of hit or miss but the banter is consistently amusing.
The fact it feels like warcraft 3 and starcraft 2 mashed together and they said it'll have a map editor excites me so much! Imagine custom games online like warcraft 3 had. I spent hours playing them and even making them! I hope tge spirit lives on here too!
looks like Warcraft 3 (reforged) with Starcraft units, the trees thing could be done in Warcraft 3 but they didn't think to add any instances of semi-permeable tree walls on vanilla maps from memory. Can't say I like the art style but it seems to be the current thing in with a lot of developers.
The art style is not great, however if you go back to pre-alpha of Starcraft 2 it looked quite cartoony as well compared to what we have now, so fingers crossed that graphics is gonna improve. The gameplay looks nice.

@@PentaHousen That's just incorrect? It looks far more like warcraft III than starcraft honestly, but the genre isn't DoA by any means. There just hasn't been a new quality RTS since SC2 back over a decade ago. Nobody has had the balls to make one. We don't have any clue how it will go when it releases. Total war games are fun, especially warhammer III and the older titles, but they don't really fill the same niche. honestly, I hope it does spark a renewal of the genre's popularity. Age of Empires 2 has seen a massive revival in recent years and even has a thriving pro scene again. There is room for another title.
@@PentaHousen They look nothing like the medivacs from SC2 what? the only thing they have in common is their mechanics, but SC2 ripped that off from other RTS games way before that lol. This was what I meant with my original post. SC2 isn't the only RTS, it isn't even the most popular OR the most fun. And it certainly wasn't the highest quality. The "feel" of the game is definitely starcraft esque, with warcraft themed settings. But all of that stuff was ripped right out of games that came out way before starcraft 2.
To mainstream gamers, RTS is not the most famous genre but it has an avid core audience, the focus is just shifting away from big titles to multiple indie and AA games alongside big releases like total wars.
Spellforce 1 literally BiS in the RTS genre, idc what anyone has to say. We need a remaster of that masterpiece of a game. For todays online standards you could implement the hero mechanic so well, being able to level your character across multiple games. Kind of like dota heroes that carry over to the next games..
KKND2: Krossfire --- RTS on PS1 in 1998... infantry can move through the woodland yet mechanical units can not. 2023: Rovolutionary new tactical possibilities! dont get me wrong, it is a good thing to have in an rts... the more the better! but not something to brag about, especially this early on. frankly i am interested and intrigued at RTS games but I'd like to see something new... asymetrical gameplay maybe?
I thought the showcase was dope. Im excited for it. Always liked war3, sc, sc2 and that kind of game from blizz. now im excited for the new gen from Stormgate.

If you think this looks good I BEG you to play Starcrafts 2 Wings of Liberty campaign. It is totally free, fun, casual-friendly, and filled with atmosphere and memorable characters. One of the best RTS campaigns of all time.
Nah, id rather see something more similar to WC 3 than SC 2 tbh, Warcraft had that readability and casuality with also super high skill cap. SC2 was hard to read and generally if u were a noobie u didnt know anything what was going on if u watched some pro's playing where in WC3 most people could easily notice great micro plays or fails. Idk, wish they decided to go for more WC3 design ...
it has a lot of similarities to wc3 tho. Did you make your decision that it is so based on just watching this video and asmongold's comments as somebody that played sc2 13 years ago and is jaded about games? You can clearly see the time to kill is much higher/battle speed is much lower, which is the intent, ie between wc3 and sc2, ie much slower than sc2; besides a lot of other inspirations in units and tech, resource gathering and buildings (esp supply structures) there is a form of creep-jacking in this game which they showcased (but different than Wc3) in sc2 u definitely can follow along simialrly, this is more so bias from people who play a game thinking its easier to follow
One thing that I miss is the whole hero's and level up system that made Warcraft 3 the best. I was hoping they were going to go for that or maybe they didn't show it.
WarCraft also. Has elements from AoE and even CoH, and some other games, with some newer stuff remixed in (the transport is supposed to have a 'retreat' style option from CoH for example)
i love when ex blizzards devs shows how its done but something i think they should work on to make it different from the other rts is doing something about the rushers... (ppl that rushes on the first 5 mins of the game and destroys the base) that kinda ruins the fun of the multiplayer rts game
"This is why Starcraft II died". Nah, bruh. The RTS genre is just in its "long tail" phase, where it's just a niche gaming genre, the same way MMOs and turn-based strategy games are now. No RTS game is going to blow up the way they did back in the 1990's, no matter how good it is.
"Didn't see a lot of new mechanics" literally shows 2-3 new things in that short ALPHA test. Gamers are so doomer these days, not allowed to get hyped for anything.
True, but it's an intentional choice to prioritize gameplay over realism. There're some rts games that lean more into realism though, but they just don't do it for me personally
Then you have to go about the buildings being to small as well. Realism, especially in rtss, isn’t something that really matters. It’s all about gameplay.
is the chat 15 years old? stormgate is hyped exactly because it is like starcraft 2 but modernized and will be more accessible for new players while allowing competitive gameplay.
Let's be real. This will come out very late and it's just Starcraft II with better graphics. I like base builder RTS games, but I am actually mostly fine just playing the old stuff. This needs to have a good campaign or at least offer a few unquie features. I bought Cossacks 3 and Ancient Wars because the original games didn't run properly on Windows 10 and looked way too dated, but Starcraft II still looks great. Even Warcraft 3 would have been fine with some lighting updates (like Classic WoW looks much better with the improved engine). Supreme Commander 2 still looks great too.

Imagine 6 nukes on your base, hence why being offensive is important
being able to create your own hero was amazing
Going to playing Stormgate day freaking one, boys
there'll be an open beta before launch
If you’re looking for day 9 content to consume, he has a great “mostly walking” show where him and two game dev friends play through old school point and click adventure games like King’s Quest. They can be kind of hit or miss but the banter is consistently amusing.
The fact it feels like warcraft 3 and starcraft 2 mashed together and they said it'll have a map editor excites me so much!
Imagine custom games online like warcraft 3 had. I spent hours playing them and even making them! I hope tge spirit lives on here too!
Holy shit, RTS GAME, lets goooo
They should have just called it Heroes of the Overwatch Storm Gaaaaaate.
Day9 looks like my dad, we're 1 year apart... sheeet.
Can't wait for Stormgate and Tempest Rising. Good RTS games are awesome.
Looks genuinely promising
looks like Warcraft 3 (reforged) with Starcraft units, the trees thing could be done in Warcraft 3 but they didn't think to add any instances of semi-permeable tree walls on vanilla maps from memory. Can't say I like the art style but it seems to be the current thing in with a lot of developers.
The art style is not great, however if you go back to pre-alpha of Starcraft 2 it looked quite cartoony as well compared to what we have now, so fingers crossed that graphics is gonna improve. The gameplay looks nice.
it definitely pops, esp in the animations than reforged
God damn I always love seeing Day9 man. So much fun back in the old days with SC2 Funday Mondays and to this day I still go back and watch his Amnesia playthrough 😂
2:36 that's not how firebats look like KEKW those are basically melee units, guys in suits
look closest is thor in sc2 which is a chunky/blocky mech walker
would really like to see more warcraft 3 influence than starcraft influence, but eh, it's early days, we'll see how it goes.
Why? Starcraft was objectively the better rts game. Warcraft 3 just had a better story.
@@Ohmagawdjr I simply disagree, and I never had fun playing starcraft or sc2. Just my preference.
cant wait for the spiritual sucessor of starcraft/warcraft whith a fanmade map that will be the spiritual sucessor to DotA AllStars
It's crazy how making another WC3 or Starcraft seems impossible these days.
0:45 that was Legact of The Void
Man this game has great quality vibe. Some rts are too slow or too ancient not my type like stronghold never was for me. or cossacks well cossacks was kinda fun actually. This game i like it immediately damn.
Yeah, too many people in the chat who have only ever played a single rts not understanding what's good or not.
100% was actually so sad to see some peoples comments. If I wasent upset knowing the genre will be damaged cuz ppl turn themselves away, I would feel only pity for their inability to look at something new with a fresh prespective.
Genre is dead on arrival. This one looks like StarCraft and i dont see appeal at all. Its all about total war now
@@PentaHousen That's just incorrect?
It looks far more like warcraft III than starcraft honestly, but the genre isn't DoA by any means. There just hasn't been a new quality RTS since SC2 back over a decade ago. Nobody has had the balls to make one. We don't have any clue how it will go when it releases.
Total war games are fun, especially warhammer III and the older titles, but they don't really fill the same niche.
honestly, I hope it does spark a renewal of the genre's popularity.
Age of Empires 2 has seen a massive revival in recent years and even has a thriving pro scene again. There is room for another title.
@@shadowlife15 medivacks are straight from SC2....
This looks like a WC3 MOD with HD graphics. Even the HUD looks the same.
1:07 his hand waves need to be a new meme lmao
I hope they will ad Custom Mapping. So we can get Wintermaul and TD Maps
Custom maps will be a thing according to FG.
KKND2: Krossfire --- RTS on PS1 in 1998... infantry can move through the woodland yet mechanical units can not.
2023: Rovolutionary new tactical possibilities!
dont get me wrong, it is a good thing to have in an rts... the more the better! but not something to brag about, especially this early on. frankly i am interested and intrigued at RTS games but I'd like to see something new... asymetrical gameplay maybe?
this game has potential
I thought the showcase was dope. Im excited for it. Always liked war3, sc, sc2 and that kind of game from blizz. now im excited for the new gen from Stormgate.
Emperor: Battle for Dune ripe for a sequel right now; criminally underrated RTS with the C&C live acting in the campaign, special place in my heart with all of C&C (Red Alert in particular), StarCraft, Warcraft 3.
If you are an RTS fan, go back and check it out! So much fun!!!
super excited about this, been playing Sc2 for 10 years
Honestly this looks like its gonna be good, i can absolutely see sinking thousands of hours playing this just like age of empires or dune
As far as lethality, the developers have stated they are aiming for a middle ground between SC2 and WC3.
it has a lot of similarities to wc3 tho. Did you make your decision that it is so based on just watching this video and asmongold's comments as somebody that played sc2 13 years ago and is jaded about games? You can clearly see the time to kill is much higher/battle speed is much lower, which is the intent, ie between wc3 and sc2, ie much slower than sc2; besides a lot of other inspirations in units and tech, resource gathering and buildings (esp supply structures) there is a form of creep-jacking in this game which they showcased (but different than Wc3)
in sc2 u definitely can follow along simialrly, this is more so bias from people who play a game thinking its easier to follow
One thing that I miss is the whole hero's and level up system that made Warcraft 3 the best.
I was hoping they were going to go for that or maybe they didn't show it.
Warcraft 3!was the first game for me that really got me hooked. I think this is going to be a really good day.
We have Total Annihilation/Supreme Commander successor with Beyond All Reason and now we gonna have Star Craft successor with Stormgate. Good shit.
it is also a bit of a war3 succesor, has quite a few mechanics and design choices inspired by it as well
It looks like a weird mixture of Starcraft and Command and Conquer and I am so here for it!!
@@trader2137 Fantastic people just love doom posting
@@trader2137 There are many new mechanics, u saw 20 seconds of gameplay and u think u have seen everything? How delusional
WarCraft also.
Has elements from AoE and even CoH, and some other games, with some newer stuff remixed in (the transport is supposed to have a 'retreat' style option from CoH for example)
@@trader2137 based on what information did you make this assesment
Holy shit! An rts? Let's goooooooo
i love when ex blizzards devs shows how its done but something i think they should work on to make it different from the other rts is doing something about the rushers... (ppl that rushes on the first 5 mins of the game and destroys the base) that kinda ruins the fun of the multiplayer rts game
I Think asmon summarized it perfectly when he said StarCraft 2.5 😂
And based on what is that? SC 2.5 is more like Legacy of the Void expansion with how big of an impact 12 worker start was
"This is why Starcraft II died". Nah, bruh. The RTS genre is just in its "long tail" phase, where it's just a niche gaming genre, the same way MMOs and turn-based strategy games are now. No RTS game is going to blow up the way they did back in the 1990's, no matter how good it is.
This looks like how I always imagined Warcraft 4 would look
Looks awesome, but I prefer the C&C UI of the panel being on the right side of the screen.
Variety in terain engagement is what I'm looking for
"Fat Steven Jobs"
I can't 🤣
Spat my tea all over reading that
Insert Fry meme "shutup and take my money!"
2:38 Steve Bobs?
That dude in the turtle neck wants to be Steve Jobs sooooo bad lol
no it doesnt just look like starcraft, it looks like if warcraft 3 was starcraft 2, AND IM DOWN.
Holy shit what happened to Day9
It’s been a year and I really hope that they kept the Viking helmet battle chicken.
Everytime i binge asmongold videos, adsense gives me steak and meat advertisements........
I think Zack broke the algorithm.
Tempest Rising: Command & Conker spiritual successor
Stormgate: Warcraft spiritual successor.
Is the RTS genre about to come back?
Wait that's Day9!? I hear the voice, but i just can't see him!
Is that day9? I haven't seen him in ages. If that's him, he looks way different now.
Have you guys learned og Age of the Ring ? A lotR based RTS its quiet awesome ;)
Wait I haven't seen that video why does Day9 look like Steve Jobs?
- "Whats new about stormgate"
- "It's made for all skill levels"
So nothing about this RTS is new
Except they showed new stuff?
"Didn't see a lot of new mechanics" literally shows 2-3 new things in that short ALPHA test. Gamers are so doomer these days, not allowed to get hyped for anything.
true
hoping it goes well
I'm gonna support the shit out of this game.
Finally !
A promising rts
They must keep Viking chicken
I think StormGate can be better if it allows modding+mapping and makes it easy to do so.
Thats is literally in their plan. U can make and share maps in the all within the game. Thats their plan at least
Damn... Day 9 looking like Year 49
Hmmm idk
I was hoping it would be more like Warlords battlecry with the hero mechanic but it's nice that they want to focus on casual content
hm? heroes won't be in 1v1, in the other gamemodes theyll be present
@@mareksicinski3726 ooooh okay thanks for the reply now I have to check this out
We require more Vespene Gas!
damn, they didnt think about it too much
It's a bit silly to have huge mechs not be able to go in between some trees, but then having them be air-dropped from a ship that's half their size.
True, but it's an intentional choice to prioritize gameplay over realism.
There're some rts games that lean more into realism though, but they just don't do it for me personally
@@grinm1899 They could at least make that drop ship a bit bigger xD
@@Navhkrin If they make the dropship to big, would be imposible to micro.. It's important to take micro of the units in account
To be fair look at a chinook lifting a humvee
Then you have to go about the buildings being to small as well. Realism, especially in rtss, isn’t something that really matters. It’s all about gameplay.
Wow feels strange to see big mode Steve Jobs and biggie Bill Gates talking to each other
When will this game be available?
What about world editor tools, mods/custom maps really boost games like Warcraft and Starcraft
they said those are coming too
but is there a custom game creator where we can make dota in it ?
New rts that's exciting havent played one for ages used to be big fan. Wasn't too interested in previous new rts but this looks promising actually.
I didn't see the show, but I'm interested in knowing why Day9 is looking like he's doing his best Steve Jobs impersonation lol
so ex-blizzard are trying to rebuild a new blizzard with a clone of starcraft?
Omg, Day9 turned from late 20ies to 50ies overnight somehow
This man really dressed up like Steve jobs to present this lmao gives me Sodapoppin vibes from that otk announcement xD
So, that's like a mod for SC2 ?
is the chat 15 years old? stormgate is hyped exactly because it is like starcraft 2 but modernized and will be more accessible for new players while allowing competitive gameplay.
so its starcraft but with lol engine? I mean if its f2p i play it
Let's be real.
Supreme Commander 2 still looks great too.
someone did interview and talk a about mechinics.
It's takes more from w3 than from sc2. + also grabbed some mechanics from red alerts to AOE
On surface - it's just terrans but mechanics INSIDE the game
I wish instead of the scifi route they went more fantasy/middle ages route. A warcraft 3 style game without heros
Some info, monk is a dev, tlo is a pro gamer at SC2 so uhh, no eonder the dev got eaten alive here.
You can tell it's by the save developer as the UI looks straight out of the 90's. This is just Warcraft / Starcraft or C&C.
