  • Even GameStop knows there's not much of a future in new AAA video game releases, and they're pivoting back to retro game consoles like many players. This isn't a ringing endorsement of the state of the video game industry right now.

I hate that. As an example GTA V worked fine on Win 7 for many years, then an update happened and it stopped working.
I thought it was because I had used a pirated copy.
Then I bought the game and it didn't work because the launcher were updated to not run on Win 7..
It is my fault if I buy a game without reading the specifications like I failed to do in 2021 with Total War: Rome Remastered - it also didn't run on my Windows 7 but at least the game stated it wouldn't in the minimum requirements..
With GTA V it stated it would run on Win 7, and it did run on Win 7 for many years - then all of a sudden they withdraw support...
That's different and should be illegal.
I did pay full prize for a Win 7 PC game and then they update it so that it won't run on said Windows..
It's as if you buy a Nintendo 64 game and they would update it to not run on the Nintendo 64...

to be honest, my new stance is the game must come with modding tools so that shit can always be taken out completely.
but then again, i do hope these companies go broke, no actually i hope they go bankrupt and have to sell and they never come into the business ever again.
like if Ubisoft actually goes bankrupt and they try to make another company, i would boycott them before they make any game, because i do not trust them, i do not trust who they hire or what they prioritize on, they deserve bankruptcy forever and never return to the industry of making or selling games.

I can confirm this. Modern games cost stores about 50 per copy. You can buy used games for under 10 in most cases. Then, resell for about 45-50 if it's a newer game. Older games tend to cost below 5 and you can still resell used for over 20 or 30. Some DS and 3DS Nintendo games can still be sold fairly close to their retail price. The margins end up being better per used game.

I was fortunate to have a handful of workers who really knew their stuff regarding Windows software, etc. At then end of my time there, my store went from 1/4 console games to 1/2. SNES and Sega Genesis were the top dogs. PlayStation One (PS1) was new, 3DO, Sega Dreamcast; and Atari's attempt at a gaming console, the Jaguar. Microsoft had their own four-foot section in the store that they paid for. Only Windows/Microsoft products could be displayed there. Lots and lots of PC games (floppy disk and CD). We always did very good business especially the holidays. Overall, a great experience for a much different time.

With the way, the economy is, it is not prudent to drop thousands of dollars on a gaming computer when you can simply download a free game like League of Legends or Guild Wars 2 for MMORPG players.

I work with a GEN-Z guy....I am 51 years old. He knows all my music from the 80's and 90s rock. He hates the new music....He asked me for a list of good movies to watch from that era, I gave him a huge list. Things weren't censored and boring like they are now. I still play older games....

I am so glad I began collecting old games as far back as 2002. Back then you could get an NES and a box of 30 good games for $20. Just glad I picked up most of my Sega Saturn stuff back then. The prices went nuts on that thing.

I do miss game stores... they shut down gamestop in sweden and now gamestores are rare. Major cities may have a gaming/nerd store. But if you go to a smaller city you are mostly out of luck. When Gamestop was around you could find at least 1 in most cities.

Last year, all of the Gamestops in my country shut down, and it wasn't instant; literally everything in the store, from the games to the shelves to the screens were being sold, everything was 10% and that went up by 10% with every week that passed, like the were desperate to make sure they had literally nothing left when they finally closed.
From what I hear, this is only in my country because literally no one else is saying that Gamestop is gone.
Conversely, there are now loads of second hand game shops around, but they all have huge marked up prices. Pokémon X is 70 euro, and the later Pokémon games are cheaper, while the older games are more expensive.

Education about these retro games and the proper tools are needed to check them. GameStop needs to do better for all of us gamers.

Learned how to emulate now have everything from 2600 PS3 Xbox 360 at finger tips. I will never complete majority of games and no desire for newer systems.

When the Genesis first came out, I recall that new games were coming out every month. When I purchased my Genesis, Altered Beast was packaged with the console. Some of the earlier games I bought around that time were Space Harrier II, Super Hang On, Thunder Force II, Super Thunder Blade, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Mystic Defender, The Revenge of Shinobi, & Zoom. The only game I recall taking a long time to get was Phantasy Star II and I had to order it from B&H Photo because the local stores didn't have it in stock. That was my first JRPG.

I'll just share with you what me and a couple of the customers at GameStop all gathered together the share: most of the new AAA games feel odd, fake, and have this weird sterile kind of feel to it. Feels like a manufactured good with ' bland/ safe' feel with no love put into it. Versus the retro games which have a lot of love, care and replay value.😂❤

*Miles Morales Spiderman. Great visuals, great ideas, execution: weak. Less unique gameplay features and feels like a safer version of previous PS5 Spiderman games with too much comfort & familiarity than rarely taking chances.
*Ghosts of tsushima should've gotten game of the year for its unique gameplay over The Last of Us 2...Which is getting a remaster😑 same safe bland gameplay. There's more examples out there but those come to mind quickly. Hell, even Mortal Kombat 1, despite the great Lore and DLC, has lost a lot of interest in favor of Capcom's Fighting game collections; which are all retro titles vs this AAA title with all the bells and whistles .

There's a great retro game store in Albuquerque, NM called Gamers Anonymous, which looks and feels like how Gamestop once was back in their early days. Wall of old magazines from the 90s-2000s you can browse and buy. They buy, sell, and fix old consoles, and they have a game room in the back that feels like you stepped back in time to the late 80s. That store needs more attention imo.

Black Myth Wukong has sold almost 18 million copies in less than a month. Monster Hunter World sold 25 million copies, and I guarantee MH:Wilds will pull similar numbers. Warhammer 40K: Space Marines 2 has sold over 2 million copies, and that was officially released TODAY.
When AAA studios make games for actual gamers, and not the mythical "modern audience", gamers buy them.

The new owners of Atari really seem to be trying to make a name for the company again. I'd like Atari to buy GameStop out, fire off all the incompetent and outright evil management and stop making everybody hate GameStop. No more sneaking $2 each on my bill for "insurance" onto each game I buy because corporate demands they scam customers.
I have a massive backlog of games - Just on the PS3 and PS4, I have almost a thousand games I haven't played yet. I have a strong collecting instinct but a weaker drive to play them, and if I come across any difficulty in the first minutes of playing a game I'll quit it because there's so many others I can play and it's not worth the time and effort to "git good" if it's not compelling me to stick with it.
