Join me as we take a return trip on the gondola with a wee walk to a viewpoint at the top on an icy winters day.
Filmed on location in The Nevis Range (5 miles outside Fort William) on 11th February 2022.

You canna beat a Scotland vlog by Steve Marsh, I send these vids to my older brother who moved from our home in Aberdeen to America to make him feel homesick
Thanks so much Ben! And for sharing as well all around the world :)
my wife and I rode the gondolas last month on our visit to Ft. William, has a great time
Glad you enjoyed it mate :)
Travelled on the gondola many years ago, before the scratched windows and said I would love to go back and do it again. Really enjoyed your film and still hope to go back. Thanks for reminding me, and for your many other videos which I am enjoying., Keep the camera rolling please.
Just to let you know Steve that Barry Island had a gonederler I think I spelt it correctly on the butlins holiday site in the vale of Glamorgan about 20 minutes drive away but it was only a short ride but unfortunately the holiday camp has been demolished years ago 😢
Thanks so much Steve for taking me all over Scotland, for I'll never be able to get back there... Thanks again.
Cheers.
Many more adventures for you to come along on I hope Roger! Thank you!
Great video 😃👍🏻! That poor wee dog though😥 ! He looked freezing ❄️
Cheers Laura! Aye, that was a wee bit out of context with the dog - he was actually having a ball of a time up there, not just tied up all the time thankfully :)
On top of the world up there 👍 that poor dog, I'd of been having words with it's owner
I know, he looked really cold, but it maybe looks a bit out of context in the short video clip, he was having a ball of a time up there with his owner :)
Ah, glad I’m not the only animal lover who was feeling so awful for that sweet baby! It tore my heart out seeing it with snow hanging off its legs. Thanks for putting my mind at ease in saying its owner was there with it. 🙏🏼💕
Absolutely LOVE your videos! 👍🏼❤️🔥🏴
Enjoyed that, a sub from me. 👍 Need to do that again.
Can't stop watching these video's Steve!!! :):):)
That was really interesting...
I don’t have a head, or stomach, for heights so this is one of your adventures I’m more than happy to watch from a distance. The scenery is awesome, as always. Thanks again for sharing.
Thanks Doris, it was the first time I'd been on it and pleasantly surprised, but would rather go back up in summer and go for a longer walk in-between :)
Oh what a ride! Good thinking sticking the camera out of the skylight :-) Thanks for the lovely views up there Steve
I enjoyed this, Steve. What a nice day. I live in four feet of snow for half the year, so the flakes didn't turn me on! "To each their own", said the old lady who kissed the cow. I love the resturants...
Aye, I can imagine the snow would lose it's appeal for you!
Another "something to do in Scotland" added to my ever growing list.
Thanks Steve for dragging us along on your travels 🙂
Cheers Rob! Enjoying discovering these wee places and adding them to the video catalogue :)
@@steve-marsh Steve - Do the gondolas run during the summer? If so, I see a return trip for you to check out that specular view in clear weather.
Hi Steve, worth the wait as always, your right about getting your moneys worth, quite expensive when you include the parking. All in all beautiful photography and scenery cheers.
Aye, well worth it for a video, but I'd probably give it a miss if I was just going up and down for 20mins. Cheers Brian!
Greetings Steve, Enjoyed the trip up the mountain. Also another past trip memory of the White Corries Chairlift. I kept telling Bertha it would be clear at the top. At the top an unseen voice came out of the cloud asking if we were getting off. Before I could reply Bertha said not and we headed back down. It did clear at the base. Thanks again. Jim
Haha wise decision Bertha! :D
Your vids just take me back to childhood holidays, staying in fort william, lochinver, Stornoway, orkney and seeing all these wonderful places, or even when we just loaded up in the car to go snow hunting in the winter on a saturday driving all the way up to glencoe and beyond. Always loved the gondolas at the nevis range, they were great with disabled passengers too, usually stopping the gondola to let my mum on. God how i miss those days. Always makes me sad that you realise that a lot of scots dont realise what we have up north and always amazed ne that i was one of only 2 in my year to have gone further north than loch lomond. Thanks for the reminder of some great memories!
You're very welcome! I must admit when I was a kid I remember being very jealous of some classmates heading off abroad on holiday when we were spending ours in Scotland AGAIN, but boy do I look back on those times fondly now! Aye, it's incredible the number of people you meet who haven't had a highland experience, it's absolutely stunning up there!
Lovely gondola ride you cannot beat it, l will watch this again, again, thank you for sharing, 😊
When it first opened in 1989/90, and for the first number of years, the car park was free, my wife and I used to drive up regularly from Edinburgh early at the weekends to ski Anoch Mor, the actual name of the mountain, that's what the ski area was called back then, it was only a lot later they renamed it Nevis Range ( the Ben Nevis is opposite).
It had a real European feel back then going up in the gondola and as you mentioned is still the only gondola.
Sadly Scottish skiing in recent years has suffered badly with lack of snow, indeed this year 22 it's well into Feb and still hardly any skiing to speak of, such a shame.
Great seeing the hill again in your video, made me nostalgic for times gone past ! 👍
Cheers Richard, aye, it really is struggling these days, I always wonder if one day they'll just have to admit defeat and pull the plug!
Great video Steve. 👍 The gondola is on my bucket list for next year. Thanks a lot.
Wild but Magnificent..... So was the scenery ... :-))))
Haha cheers! :D
I am going to Scotland later this month, so I find your videos from Scotland very useful. Thanks !
Watching from Banff in Canada, was interested to see one of our local ski hills has the exact same cars on their Gondola too ('Sunshine Village'). You're right about the amount of snow, it was a bit painful to watch those poor souls trying to ride that small strip of snow, but probably more painful to hear how much it will cost when we visit in May. However any day out like that is still a good day. Very enjoyable watching your travel logs as we get ready ti visit.
Yeah, and not much fun when you fall in the hard ice either! All the best for your visit in May :)
My son and I were there about 25 years ago. The weather was substantially better as we were there in the month of August. It was one of our best days in the two weeks we were in Scotlland
Ruggedly beautiful....
Been there done that. WONERFULL. You were lucky to have such beautiful views, Thank you
Morning Steve, I've been up there 3 or 4 times. The first of those a ski-ing trip in 1991 saw the conditions change rapidly from poor to scary within 20 minutes. The wind and snow came driving in which meant visibility was down to a few yards because of the snow being blown up off the mountain. Small pieces of ice hitting you, felt like stones being thrown at you. The Gondola was stopped completely and a piste basher went up the top telling everyone to get down the mountain however you could. I jumped on. We all gathered in the restaurant which used to be where the Gondolas arrived. Back in 1991 food and drinks were served up there all day. We had to wait around 5 hours for the wind speed to come down to allow the Goldola to run again and even when it did they ran it slowly. Instead of the trip down taking 10 minutes, it took over an hour as they kept stopping it. I saw people using their ski hats to be sick into. I was told that the Gondola stopped if the wind speed gusted over 90 mph. Thanks for a trip down memory lane 👍
You are one up on me good sir , I have never travelled on the gondolla and it's in my back yard. I did use the bottom carpark a lot as it was the helicopter pick up point when working in some of the remote Scottish communities ....
I was so excited to see part two Steve! We will definitely add the gondola to our itinerary! Stay warm! You guys have really been sacked the last couple of weeks!
Thanks so much Gwendolyn - and the weather just keep coming!
Started my Saturday morning watching Part Two. WOW! Fantastic journey Steve. Thanks for braving the cold weather and bringing this experience home. It is one thing hanging out at a view point, enjoying the weather blow in, you just want to stay longer. The little bird says, 'Dude we need to get in from the cold' also, enough snow could fall, white out condition and cannot see the trail anymore. The closing music very peaceful.
Thanks Frank :D Those little birds are hardy souls flying high!
Couldn't have timed that better, Steve. On lunch break at work and was struggling to find something to watch! :)
Hah cheers mate! Now back to work ;)
@@steve-marsh Yessir!! 😂
Still can't believe the Police station is now a hotel, looked mega weird you walking out the front door, the front of the building is still exactly how I remember it, I still have all the paperwork but again that's another story, the Court was directly next door.
One gift I was born with is a DAM good memory and still regularly bring stuff up that jogs peoples minds and blows them away, little fun fact for you Steve, about 2 weeks after I was last up the Nevis Range my then GF told me she was expecting, my daughter turns 26 this April.
How time flies eh, and back in the 90's it was a lot cheaper and the car parking was free.
Thanks again fella.
Haha love it Gary! :)
looks so nice one of the best spots in britan for sure :)
It really is! Totally agree :)
There used to be a similar cable car at Abraham heights near Matlock I seem to recall they was a mine near the top. We went up there before the cable car was built. I always remember my uncle making the comment, I bet Abraham didn't come up here in his open toed sandles with his shirt tail flapping. Living on the flat a hand brake was not necessary. At the hair pin bends someone had to jump out and put a brick behind the wheel. Nice video. Thank you
This is absolutely brilliant Steve
Next time I will go up in the gondola and do some photography and have a coffee! In the summer it's probably worth looking for golden eagles. It's great seeing the journey home too. Reminded me of the Black Forest.
I might join you up there in summer! Would be great to be able to walk 10m without the fear of falling and cracking my head off a rock!
Thanks for these two videos Steve. Fabulous. Could feel the cold from the comfort of my living room. Best wishes to you and Alicja.
Haha enjoy the blast of cold air from my video :) Aw the best to you too!
Twenty eight quid to park & ride the cable car plus what you might spend in the no-food restaurant.
I suppose as a one-off experience the price is not totally outrageous but not a bargain either.
Thanks for showing us that trip, very interesting.
Aye true - I ended up eating what food I had in the van as it was getting out of control!
A bit more glamorous than the chairlift at Butlins Ayr when I was wee! Inspiring as always, thank you Steve!
Haha that would have made some video :)
What a brilliant idea using the camera outside the gondola.
I just love these videos. The top was like a moon landscape. More please Steve.
Glad you enjoyed your day and also you're walk,so have a safe journey home, perhaps see you on the next video. ... Ps enjoyed both videos.
Well done Steve . I think that is a wee picnic in the Summer for you and Alicja...Take care await your next adventure.
I really do want to take Alicja there! She can carry the picnic :)
I love your young at heart energy and enthusiasm. I can imagine myself with my grandchildren going up then coming down. I also would want to get my moneys worth and go up again. My grandchildren pleading with me not to take them again. Oh well, they don’t know what they’re missing. 🤣😅
Haha cheers Michael! I really am just a big kid!
I’m terrified of gondolas too, but easier than walking!
Haha true :D
Fantastic! I've not been on these gondolas, but I've been on the Italian Italian versions in The Dolomites when I was embarrassing myself on the slopes! Your comments about the Scottish skiing industry are spot on.
Cheers David, The Dolomites sound epic - even the name is epic!
@@steve-marsh My first car was a Triumph Dolomite!
Stunning place
You can get the bus from fort William/spean bridge to the Nevis range car park if you didn’t want to drive, shiel buses N41.
Awesome info, cheers Steve!
Another great video about Scotland's natural beauty. Very enjoyable. Thanks, Steve.
Glad you enjoyed it Philip! Fun wee day oot!
Great stuff Steve. Scenery is amazing . I'll be heading up there in May for the Mountain Bike world cup.

Martin
Ahhh I read about that on the Nevis Range website! Have a great time!
Thank you again Steve. I love the snow too!!
Big kids eh? :)
@@steve-marsh absolutely. We're all kids at heart!!
Not bad value if you consider it would take you 4/5 hours to walk up to the peak. It always gives you the added ability to evacuate fast when the snow arrives (as it did for me in June 2018) - Just watched the video for the second time, thanks Steve!
Not quite the ‘Braveheart ‘ of yesterday, James Bond, maybe 🤔 I did have visions of you running along the top of the gondola 🚡 trying to retrieve your camera! That poor little mutt 🐶 looked frozen but at least he had a jacket on! No food in a restaurant!🥺 I’m now wondering how the Ambulance gondola works if you are having a heart attack dangling between stations in a power cut, 😰 I’m thinking do they have a spare generator! Great that you went back up Steve, not bad for someone who hates heights! tried it once, not for me I’m afraid 😳 fabulous views though, thanks again for another journey of interest “👌”
Thanks Bernice! This was one just for the video I guess - I don't mind the ride but it would be nice to be able to go for a proper walk when up there and get real value from the day. To be fair, the wee dog was having a ball of a time, my clip shows it maybe a bit out of context when he looked all tied up and alone. Thanks for coming along again - oh talking of 'Braveheart' I'm editing something with a connection right now! :)
@@steve-marsh Can’t wait for the connection Steve, and pleased the wee dog was enjoying himself! 🤗
I enjoyed seeing what the gondola experience was like. Thanks Steve.
Glad you enjoyed it Del, cheers!
That was good Steve. I'm not so good on my feet these days, so should I ever get up there, with encouragement from your video, unless it's a very good day, I would probably be heading for the cafe. It's great that there is such a good cafe up there. You made me think of a "ski de piste" excursion which I did with friends, once, when holidaying in St Julienne, France, which is just across the Swiss border from Geneva. We went up into the mountains & did our ski de piste which was more or less a ski walk on flat snow with about 6" slopes (enough for me). It was a good experience & I liked being able to look far down into the valley from way up high. So I thank you for those memories & for letting me see what I could still possibly attempt ie the chair lift & cafe, at least, & a walk with a view on a nice sunny day.
Sounds so much fun Robert! I love wee European adventures too - did similar at Zermatt.
Another great video. I looked at visiting the gondola in January, but I thought the £23.50 price tag was a little too steep for my limited budget. That was also a lovely song to end the video.
Cheers Scott! I always struggle with music! Aye, it's a bit pricey, I'd have passed if it wasn't for the channel for sure! You can get all the way to London for that ;)
Really enjoyed this video, and Gondola, love them, would like a Mono rail around town, 😊
Sometimes adventure comes unexpectedly, good & bad. But for others it happens more regularly, as with you Steve, because some seek adventure through planning and placing yourself squarely in its path. Big and small, your adventures are inspired, and I thank you.
Thanks so much Doug! Really appreciate the comment :) I'm always thinking of where next!
I remember in May '94 arriving at the top of Ben Nevis at the start of running the three highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales in one day to find a circa 4 ft blanket of snow. How times have changed !
Wow - what an awesome achievement!!!!
Another gem in miniature. Go Steve!
Cheers Nicole!
Oh I REALLY enjoyed that one I love those sort of rides! I thought Gondola's were only in Venice though? A fab wee trip Steve and yet another item on my huge bucket list! I hope I get enough years to do Scotland, I'm sure I was meant to have lived there 😉 I can only claim a bit of ancestry from my great gran from Crossmichael, desperate to go up there & check it all out. Thanks for that lovely video.
Lovely VLog @SteveMarsh I can't believe we were so close to there (It looks great Fort William) We were going to Loch Ness Highland Lodges up near Invermoriston and turned off at Spean Bridge a bit forther on than where the Gondala's are and went for Fort Agustas.
No way! I love the commando monument up in the hills above Spean Bridge.
Excellent! Keep 'em coming!
Cheers Bill, can't wait to get out again!
Done that a few times Steve, great in the summer!
Aye, was thinking how I'd much rather go in summer and make a proper day of it with a nice long hike in the hills! (without the fear of falling over and cracking my head with every step)
@@steve-marsh haha. It made a good video though 👍
Great wee video again Steve, thank you 😎
Thanks Tricia 👍
Good video, thank you for sharing 😊
Great video! Such stark but magnificent scenery. I stay away from gondolas as I have a problem with heights (I think I’ve only been on two in my life) although this one seems manageable. But that walk to the lookout almost seemed more treacherous than the hiking trail last week.
Thanks for taking us along!
Oh it was Heather! I always worry one slip and a knock on the head could turn into a major problem!
I find that I’m often watching your videos from between my fingers 😂😂.
I've only just found this channel and love it and I'm from fort william
Welcome aboard Stephen! Thanks so much for watching :)
Lovely video Steve. I got to see some of the Scottish white stuff on my trip on Tuesday this week. The train from Edinburgh to Inverness was quite something especially up though the mountains. The Caledonian sleeper was absolutely fantastic really enjoyed it and had some haggis. Take care both looking forward to the next one
I'm so glad you enjoyed it Robbie!!!!
Thanks for this! Years since I've been there and lots of happy memories. It may be out of date but there was a gondola ride in Matlock, Derbyshire that was an interesting ride as well. All the best, Jeroen.
Cheers Jeroen, glad to share some familiar places with you! I'll be checking out the Derbyshire one online now :)
LOVE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers Barry!
Just came across your channel recently when looking for ideas for a Skye trip..... I'm now at least 20 videos deep with ideas for several trips! ;-)
Keep up the fantastic work.
Haha cheers Gary! Welcome aboard :)
Hi Steve. The gondola looks pure dead brilliant but like you I'm a bit unsure of heights with shaky wee cabins attached only by a cable. However, after seeing you have a go I'd love to take a trip on one. Pity about the view point but with the Scottish weather you can't predict anything. The rest of the views caught on vid were excellent. Thanks.
Cheers Thomas! Aye, the views can always be a bit hit or miss!
Another awesome vlog, Steve.
Always wondered what Nevis Range was like.
Seen signs in Fort William.
Reminds me of the gondola that goes over the O2 arena in London & when I went up Charmonix, on french/swiss border.
Lovely and warm , ground level, snowy & windy towards the sumit.
Cheers! Thanks for coming along :) The European gondola rides are a wee bit more spectacular though eh?!
Thats more like it Steve. Cafe and Cable Car (Gondola) plus fantastic views. Can't go wrong. Very similar terrain to Glencoe. I used to go skiing when I was in the RAF at Machrihanish. Thanks.
Nice! Machrihanish is some place to be based! Did you enjoy it there?
@@steve-marsh Certainly did Steve. Did 3 years in total there. (two tours). Gorgeous town and lovely people although I was once beaten up twice on the same night for going out with a local girl!!
@@keithwhite1478 haha sorry, I shouldn't laugh, but how many people can say that :D
@@steve-marsh They couldnt accept that I was better lookinng than the local lads. :D
Brilliant Steve. Can’t make up my mind though on if you are just very brave or crazy. Argh that slippy walk up to view point 🥶.That gondola ride is just day light robbery, may be a good job you couldn’t get food at the top you would have most probably paid a fortune. Looking forward to your next trip and seeing you out and about again with Alicja xx
Thanks Judy! Yeah - my wallet wasn't much enjoying this day!!!
Brilliant video Steve.. brought back happy memories of my adventure up the mountain.we had lovely food in the restuarant at the top...ever tried exploring isle of man Steve...brilliant mountain adventure at laxey..🤩
Oh I'd LOVE to go to the Isle on Man! Long been on the list :)
I see at 11:06 you passed through Dalwhinnie which is famous for its snow covered distillery. It shares the record for the highest distillery in Scotland along with Braeval distillery in Speyside, which according to many, is slightly higher than Dalwhinnie at one end. That means you must have taken A86 and then driven down the mountain past the distillery to catch the A9 southbound. Lovely road.
Spot on with the route Reb! Well spotted! That distillery has some location eh?!
Amazing scenery
It's so beautiful up there Peter!
Another experience added to the list of things I absolutely must do before I die…
Must be a gorgeous view on a nice summer day.
I bet! Need to go back!
Took the Gondola up a few years ago to go snowboarding with the Daughter, was a great day out...…keep up the great content...😄
Cheers Graham!
Love the look of grim determination to camera as you said you will be getting your moneys worth out of that ticket, well you have to don't you?. A lovely journey and great views from the top, thank you and take care, cheers.
At that price there's no way I was only going once mate! :D
Good on you Steve. great day out! Cheers from Australia.
Thanks so much Jim!
Wow, what a view and it really shows how quick the weather changes. I've only done cross country skiing. I accidentally went down hill with my cross country skis but I don't think that counts. Lol No fear of having to make snow here the last few months. Can't wait for spring. I will enjoy your winter adventures from my warm house and look forward to your next one. Great job as always! 👍
LOVE a wee cross county ski! Exhausting though - I did a beginner course in Norway and was knackered for a week after it :D
i loved this
If you had went the opposite way when you left the gondola top station there is another view point, both are stunning ❤
Fantastic Filson cap, Steve. I have one of their excellent double layer wool coats with a thick wool collar. Very warm.
It's a quality brand eh Richard? Always fancied a wee trip to their Seattle shop and factory!
@@steve-marsh They are quite the store, and you can get them to custom make a coat such as with a bifold along the back for added flexibility. It is a real candy store for men who are outdoors.
Thanks for that Steve, my daughter told me that along with Jim her husband and Rusty the dog they all took the Gondola to the top, but Jim being a mountain biker descended on two wheels...
Superb!
Haha.. done that as well, was extremely windy when we went and they had to keep stopping it, swaying back and forth, stunning views from the top though 😊
I'm not sure I'd be too delighted with stopping to sway in the wind :O
@@steve-marsh it wasn’t the best experience 😂. We have said we’ll go up again though next time we are up that way.
Very good quality loved it
Thanks so much Clive!
Another cheery Adventure for a Saturday morning here. That's funny that you said you didn't like going on those because I was just opening my mouth to say the same thing. The things you do for us! And you're right it didn't get up high enough that I was afraid. I have mild acrophobia and this was not so high as to send me screaming and straining my eyes beautiful view! And the bench! What a lovely spot to stop. Thank you once again for all you do for us we do appreciate it. Glad you got your use out of your 23.50. Be well, stay safe, say hi to Alicja and thank her for the lead-in, love from Texas.
Aww thanks Kate, and well spotted for Alicja's wee intro :D I'm awful with heights but thankfully I could just sit back and enjoy this one without gripping on too tight! All the best over there in wonderful Texas! :)
I did this one a few years back. Was a wee bit warmer in the summer though 😉. We all really enjoyed it, nice wee walk and great fun seeing the mountain bikers flying down hill. 👍🏴🇳🇱
I'd love to take Alicja up into the hills in summer :)
Oh brilliant, they fixed it. Last time I was up there it was closed because the footings of some of the pylons had been partially washed away or something.
Aye, with repairs and the weather, you just never know when it'll be running!
In good weather the 'stroll' to the southern view point is worth consideration (view of the valley north of Nevis, Fort William from above and the Corpach part of Loch Linnhe. And be amazed if you see a cyclist pass you in the lift on the world class run under the gondola.
I was up skiing at Nevis range the other day and almost all the lifts were open and the slopes were covered in thick powdery snow! Shows how quickly the conditions can change up there!
Glad to hear there was a good dump of snow!
Great video Steve, been up the gondolas couple of times, nothing compared to the Alps, but still good. Sometimes people give you there tickets if you hang about the entrance. They do that a lot in England with all day parking tickets.
So true mate, I never tire of the Alps, even flying over them is some sight!
Many years ago, I was descending Bein an Do (spelling?) opposite the Bridge of Orchy Hotel and chose to walk downwind of a waterfall - BIG mistake. The wind blew the water into my face except that it had turned to ice by that time. The joys of walking in Scotland!
Brilliant to watch but it's a no no for me, felt faint just watching it. Well done Steve prefer it when your on the ground though lol.💞
Haha me too Margaret! :)
Who knew that was there looked fun albeit expensive fun
Aye, if it wasn't to be a video I'd have probably skipped it David :)
If you are ever in the US, you should check out Colorado. I live in the high plains (near Denver, which is a mile above sea level), but not in the mountains or even foothills. Our nearest national park (Rocky Mountain N.P.) has one of Colorado's 14ers. They are mountains that are 14000 ft above sea level! There are parts of the park that are only open in the summer because it is snowed in the rest of the year. It's gorgeous though.
I've always wanted to visit! Wait til you see our hats in one of our upcoming videos ;)
Great stuff, thanks again Steve, from me in Irvine 🤗🤗
Hey you! We passed near Irvine this weekend!
Really enjoyed that vid 👍👍
I am counting the days to my trip next month. I have been on the funicular at Aviemore but haven't tried the gondola yet. Full marks on another good video
Cheers mate! Oh - the funicular - I hope I can add a video of that as well one day!
