    In this video I am out in the field with Strunk Harvesting out of Silver Lake Kansas as they custom harvest winter wheat near Burlington Oklahoma.
    They are harvesting wheat running 4 John Deere S Series combines with Deere 745 FD heads. Running beside the combines is their JCB 8340 Fastrac tractor pulling a Brent 1196 grain cart.

    The operators look pretty green in this video - stopping on headlands to wait for other close operators, stopping to unload, not gauging the outside cut width properly. Good help is getting harder to find.

      TTshark, thank you for your kind and knowledgeable information, especially that you were so closely connected to the actual operations. Those combine operators had probably never seen that field before either. As I said earlier, "they were opening the field". While I have great respect for years of experience, experience does not make up for REAL knowledge of present day practices and methods. People should ask questions and LEARN and not be judgemental and critize. You don't know, what you don't know. Finally, and again, "there is one in every crowd". That guy is actually funny and should enjoy his Cheez Wiz (Kraft made (jar or spray can)) ($4.48 at Walmart). I think he could put a nipple on the spray can to help with his Waaaahhhhhhhh in the rocking chair. Thank you.

    I loved this video! Those combines are very powerful. It's certainly amazing how finely that they grind the chaff. The yeald that they are attaining is incredible, as well, even when they appear to be picking up some of the wheat that looks like it was laid down. Thank you for sharing this video, they are always very informative and enjoyable to watch. Thank you. Have a very happy, and enjoyable holiday season. 👍👍

    Great video! They sure had some strange movements like the combine going down the field leaving a small strip and buggy driver at the end of the field drives into the field to turn around instead of just turning on the end where he was. Made me wonder about these guys but then I remember being on a harvest crew once and we had a couple of guys that really made you wonder.

    • @JohnSmith-vo9zc
      @JohnSmith-vo9zc ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, they don't seem to be a very good crew at all. Combine operators jumbled close together on headlands stopping for each other, unloading stopped, missing strips, undercutting by 3-5 feet across field. Good help is hard to find - I think they need to advertise for help using Spanish ads.........

      Hah i know what you mean. I havent seen near as much as our field coordinator did, but boy oh boy did this season’s pea harvest crew have some absolute grade A ocean going apocalyptic dingleberries. From falling asleep and driving into a pivot, falling asleep and driving into the next field to somehow pushing a grate into the windshield shattering it. And it took a long time for them to finally get into a rhythm of harvest. I havent harvested much longer than them, but i got into a rhythm on the very first day. By the end of season i could probably open a field and know where to go/what to do in my sleep. Not that i tried though 😅

    Can tell the modern operated not old school. I was taught at a very young age from a custom cutter you go round and round not back and forth to get you max acres that machine never stops to wait. You made nice rounded corners and finished the corners when the field was done. Now days can't go unless you have gps funny they haven't figured it out to where you can do that now

    Great video! When watching your videos of this custom harvesting team I have the same question. How do they transport all this equipment from job to job across multiple states? 🤔 Do they drive it the same as a farmer would do on his own farm or do they "truck it" ? It seems like it would get a lot of wear simply driving it. Thanks for all your great videos! 👍

    • @farmhandmike
      @farmhandmike  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The custom harvesters have some pretty neat setups as far as truck and trailers go to haul the equipment from stop to stop. I did a video in summer of 2016 of a custom crew loaded up and heading out to their next stop. I'll see if I can get the link and reply with it so you can see.

      As long as you service it and replace broken parts they'll last as long as you need. Typically on an operation like this though you'll replace after 3-5 years so it maintains some resale value and you don't put so many hours on it that major items start to fail. Farmers buy them and put little hours on them in comparison, so they gets years out of them after.

    • @colestock9980
      @colestock9980 ปีที่แล้ว

      Custom harvesting companies beat the living shit out of their machines. Some have a better tract record of maintaining them than others. I know i beat the piss out of my machine, and usually i’d spot trouble before it happened, so i was able to back off or notify the mechanics who usually did nothing about it until 36 hours and a lot of money needed to go into removing the disintegrated part and replacing it with a new one, when they could just replace it then and there to prevent that…

    4 combines. All going a different directions. Sheesh.

  • @rayopeongo
    @rayopeongo หลายเดือนก่อน

    This crew seems a little inefficient.
    1. The biggest problem is that the combines are not unloading into the grain carts "on the go". They go to the grain carts and stop to unload, not the other way around.
    2. Two combines meeting head on, and having to go around each other.
    3. There is a lot of driving around without any harvesting, as they combines reposition for the next row.
    4. Leaving small strips and other small patches untouched, meaning someone has to circle back to finish them off.
    Am I missing something here?
