Right? Last time we sold our home we got one of those moving container units, packed it and moved it to storage. I moved all my personal belongings and left the house with the basics so anyone could feel like the house could be theirs. My walls were a neutral color already and I freshly painted a few walls as well. I had 3 offers above price before the open house!
I have a house near a shore. We bought it because of the location, if i want to sell it i will put whatever price i want and it will be sold within a month in whatever condition it is because own houses near shore are limited. Here u get it - buy a house in a desired place and u will have no problems to sell it later, with unreasonably elevated price
I live in the UK, and sold two years ago. In addition to the advice in the programme, I would say to definitely rent a storage unit. The stuff that you don't get round to decluttering can be hidden away in your unit. They are expensive to rent, but it's only temporary. We got many offers the first day of viewing, one of which we accepted. Decluttering and de-personalising is key.
My friends would clear out all the pet stuff, take the dog and their baby (and most of his stuff) to grandpas and also lug their big coffee table to the neighbours as, although they loved it, it was massive and took up a lot of floor space. All this for every viewing and it paid off as they sold pretty quickly at exactly what they hoped for.
We bought a house from a similar family--They felt that we needed to pay more for all their "wonderful family memories". A buyer isn't looking to buy your charming memories, they're looking to make their own. Clear your junk out and let the house speak for itself. That poor woman is so annoying!
Bless her but she is her own worst enemy . . cobwebs in brain ..maybe eat less carbs , processed food 🙄 👍 loves her kids family but seek LOGIC..get A Clue !
Sellers need to understand that realtor or stager feedback is not a personal criticism of the way they live or their self-expression. You want to attract the widest possible number of potential buyers. Moving and realtor commissions cost what they cost, so you might as well get the best deal you can and hopefully not drag out the process longer than you have to.
Im sorry but some idiots built that house, screwed up living room..that pipe...bathroom in basement. Some stubborn ignorant cheap person did this ridiculousness
Years ago there was a couple in my Sunday school class. She was pregnant with her second child and they expressed that they needed helping move. So several couples agreed to help. We got to the house. NO PREPARATIONS had been made. No packing boxes or packing materials. Toys, dirty dishes, dirty clothes, clutter all over. Turns out the couple expected the rest of us to come with the packing supplies, pack all the boxes, and then move them to their new house while he was busy working and she was busy taking care of her toddler (She was not having a problem pregnancy that might keep her from packing). I helped one time for a couple of hours, then left. I had two toddlers of my own and a part-time job. My husband had his own full-time job. Helping was one thing. Being expected to totally do someone else's job was another.
I practically packed up my husband’s EX-wifes house so she and their daughter could move. I offered to HELP but my husband and I were left having to do 90% of it!! She took the cat to the cat-sitters, bought McDonald’s and avoided being at the house for 4 out of the 5 hours we were there. When she and their daughter eventually got back, she had the gall to tell me how to wrap the copious amount of fairies and tat she had!! I said to my husband that we need to get out of here and told her that we had run out of time. She had the cheek to ask if we were coming back tomorrow! NO LAZY Bomes, we’re NOT!! Some people eh?
“It’s a lot of work!” Wah wah! As they literally hang a single picture and a single curtain rod. Um yeah. Moving is work. You have to actually pack your crap.
Realize that if your home is cluttered it will sell for less money and take longer to sell. We bought a cluttered home that had been on the market for two years at a bargain price. The ironic thing was the people threw everything in a dumpster or donated it when they moved. Why would they not listen to their realtor for two years? For us the house sold the first day on the market six years later and for 80K more. It actually looked to be the size on the listing. It was a beautiful house, you just couldn't see the house before.
Great job on the interior. Anthony is worth his weight in gold with his talent. It's a real shame the exterior wasn't addressed on the same footing as the inside. With older homes the ole saying goes...As the outside, so is the inside. Curb appeal wasn't just an off the cuff phrase....it's EXTREMELY important to wary buyers scared to buy. I bet a lot of buyers didn't even show up just from the chaos of the building and yard.
I'm sure I made this comment years ago, when this first aired on tv, but I seriously cannot believe having no master bedroom to sleep in wouldn't be a problem, showing buyers they have to sleep on the floor in the basement isn't a plus for a quick sale They have too much big furniture in there that, makes it all look like there isn't room for anything. The dramatic change in this house is incredible

This couple is so resistant to improvement…like who doesn’t want an Island in the kitchen?? And if your home looks dull and a pro makes a design suggestion, TAKE IT and run with it…
We sold our own home and I knew enough to box up the extra stuff, I repainted a few rooms to a neutral white and I packed away all family pictures so buyers could picture their things in the space. Sold in 3 days !!! 😊👍🏻

Omg I clean and assist homeowners in moving by packing for them as my job. I see these kind of things all the time. Clutter seems to be a common culprit. People buy so much and it usually ends up just collecting dust and taking up space. By the time someone like myself goes into a home like this, it is just filthy. About 85% ends up being garbage and goes to the landfill. It still blows my mind how much Americans waste.

Geez. Thats unsafe parents in basement and kids upstairs what if some1 broke in ..obviously burglar find kids first..parents would never know kids kidnapped. The kids shouldve been downstairs with a divider
having a nice, calm, peaceful color on the walls of every room will also have a positive affect on children's behavior. And with less clutter, less to clean up and pick up, the children will not have decision fatigue, their brains will get a rest, and they will do better at school, sleep better, the whole house will be more calm. If children have more structure, and can actually see all of their things and not have to stack up their things because they have too many, they can learn how to manage their own spaces and will learn how to put things away, and learn organizational skills that they will use their entire lives. Do your children a favor and declutter !!!
This house and lot look like a bowling alley. No way to arrange the furniture properly. You can’t call them clutter bugs, three kids just require a lot of stuff.
True... but to SELL it needs to be de-cluttered. These people are selling BECAUSE it is too small for THEM. The realtor is correct.. the new buyers will likely be one or two people. Decluttering sells.
They were "scratching their heads" about why the weren't getting offers? Difficult to believe...the place was a cluttered dump on the inside and outside.
It is touching to see that Amy had such nice memories establishing her family in this house, however, at some point she had to let it go as new memories were waiting to be made in a new house.
I keep looking at the front yard, the concept of the "First Look", and to me it looks...cluttered and shaggy. Wondering what it will look like by showing time.
I wouldnt have been surprised if after decluttering amy decided they DID have enough space to live there 😂 my 3 boys share a room, they could easily make the basement into a type of dorm room situation for all the kids and have the upstairs for themselves, if they didnt bring all their crap back home. 😂
If the only bathroom is in the basement. It makes sense to me to have the master bedroom in the basement. I wouldn't want to have to keep going up and down the stairs when I need to use the restroom or getting ready for work.
Those kids have all that stuff, and no space to play. Decluttering (reducing) all the things the kids have would be a big help to the kids. More open floor space in their rooms.
When we visited some old friends years ago, they put us on the floor sleeping on an old thin mattress. Not the way to treat a guest, much less to make it your master bedroom! Some people are just blind to what is truly bad taste.
@@username00009 what a nasty response. We stayed with them because they were our best friends. We could easily afford a 5 star hotel. They stayed with us in our home, on a very nice bed. They just did not know any better when hosting.
I'm glad for Amy and Frank that they took the wise advice to declutter and make some affordable upgrades to sell their house. They seem like a super nice couple and I wish them the best in their new home!
I've seen this show on tv. When I was looking to move I was already packing well before finding our 2nd house. Why she sad to pack it up pictures when they on their way to bigger and better. This is strange to me.
What did they do with their children in the house revamp? I assumed they would make the basement into the children's room, with a division in it for their son. But, they completely disappeared from the house plan!
I’ve bought and sold a lot of houses. Even though I don’t have a lot of stuff, I still store much of it. People can’t see past “stuff,” or cosmetics, ie paint and flooring. Because I can, I have picked up some bargains over the years. Often just new paint and flooring, as well as minimal decor is all that’s required. Sometimes what is needed is more extensive-updating bathrooms and kitchen-you have to do the math and determine what initial outlay will garner the most return.
I clicked because I thought this was Kirstie Allsop in the thumbnail, then saw it was her younger sister! Didn't even know she had a younger sister, another awesome property presenter to watch.
Where I live people see beyond clutter. They want to renovate anyway, so they don't care if the rooms are done up. Very different cultures. I still enjoy the programme.
You want buyers to get a feel for the available space and to be able to envision themselves and their families in that home, not yours. It affects the way people see a space, whether they realize it or not.
@@SmidBeach I understand that. But I think ot's a different housing market. Here people don't want an extra coating on the wall or even furniture. They but the oldest farms, renovate everything, insulate, rebuild bathrooms and whatnot. They KNOW how they will transform it to make it their own. But they will only buy once in a lifetime. The extra sofa or cover would already be in the way. Maybe in America people wanna move in right away, or renovate way less, and they might resell later.
@@ericnorthman9410 It's all about affordability. In a tight financial market ( like now) a little elbow grease goes a long way.. I bet all those small fixer upers are now Fixed Up and PRICY.
This couple would be rock stars if this video was covering frugal living. Love them to bits. But their face sure did light up when they found out the other property sold in a week and they knew exactly what they had to do.
They would of never sold that house without you! I'm questioning alot with this couple and not to mention they have kids so this problem is multigenerational!
What? That they didn't have the knowledge to renovate and sell houses? 😂 Not everyone has the vision to decorate. This is so not an issue for their kids
Do they ever mention the city these shows are filmed in? As an American, I find it rather amazing the houses are SO small. Of course, they all look cluttered; there's no room for anything! As soon as the new buyers move in with their furniture, clothing and personal effects, no doubt it will look cluttered again. Basically, they redecorated the house to look like a hotel suite where all you bring is your suitcase. In the case of this particular house, who would ever have the only bathroom in the BASEMENT? I live in a home that was built in the late 1800's and I have far more space. No modern bells & whistles, but it has more character than new places do.
I liked the blue paint and the round table. The house though is so impractical and feels cramped even without the clutter around. The only nice room is the new master bedroom.
I don't understand people being reluctant to pack their stuff up. You're moving out anyway! All your stuff is getting in the way of buyers ability to imagine themselves in the house. This should have been obvious to anyone. I like the changes they made, but TBH it may have sold just as well without most of the new work because packing up their personal stuff and reducing most of the furniture was probably all that was needed. I sold my house in one day by moving my personal stuff out (a huge chore, but it has to be done anyway) and staging it the way I'd want to see it if I was buying.
A good tip is to take photos of your home room by room. Look at the photos and you’ll be amazed at how you see things differently. When you live in the home you almost become blind to your clutter. Looking at photos somehow helps you to see the clutter or things that need to be changed around. Listing photos usually never have clutter or excess furniture. You’d also be likely not even want to look at a home if the online listing photos are filled with clutter.
Is it just me but does the host look like Kirsty from Location Location Location? Why are people not packing up their house if they have already bought one?
Great video! About the seller doing a home inspection to save potential buyers “the trouble” - no buyer should use the seller’s inspections reports! The buyer should always hire their own, to ensure the inspections are thorough and independent.
Agree with the major decluttering and light paint. Livingroom table should go as well as hardly enough room to walk through from the entrance. Couple put their kids first, need to pay attention to own needs and make a pleasant master bedroom. Storage rental is a good idea - but also start letting go of things well before the sale.....and remember it is no longer about their taste and choices.
I have had fun watching some of these old episodes. But one thing that occurred to me was: houses that looks like they were decorated like in the sims, sold the fastest. I know it is an odd comparison, but it actually makes sense. When you build a house in the sims, it often looks very tidy, well decorated, but without being overstuffed with personal items. Because there is no 'overflow', it will look like the cupboards have plenty of storage space for what is needed. The style is often more cohesive (because you built it in one go, whereas you, in your real home, tend to acumulate things over time, making the styles a bit mixed, and sometimes dated). Sure, you can build or decorate to be messy or bad taste. But moste of the time, it will still look better than the average house.
Omg I am speechless. I almost immediately thought, where is their Realtor? Why hasn’t their Realtor been doing more to get them working on this? The problems are huge, but obvious-“just” takes some work 🙄 Then I see the Realtor is her Uncle…. This couple needs some tough love, reality talk. The master bedroom and bath are certainly issues, but they could so easily address the clutter. They’re moving anyway.
Anyone know the original asking price? I understand the emotional resistance to spending money and working hard to make improvements to a house you are *not* going to get to live in. I'm just wondering how much of a hit the 60+ days on market hit their original asking price.
Are buyers really so foolish that they think someone actually lives in a place that looks like the final showing? When I view property I'm not looking at their furniture or arrangement. I'm not looking at paint colours because that's all going to be changed. I'm thinking about MY furniture and its placement but what I really look at is LOCATION, CONDITION, and FLOOR PLAN. The last place I bought I gutted and the only thing I kept was the bathtub. I couldn't give a toss about the taste of the previous owner or their personal stuff. I do need to be able to see all the walls so there can't be clutter hiding defects.....
Most of them are, apparently 😂 My husband and I are more like you because he is a contractor. The house we bought a few years ago is a fixer and needs so much work done but we were able to see all pass that despite the people still living there and having their crap everywhere.
I think it's more that she has all these memories from raising her family there, and she's kinda sad to move on. Weird to me that nobody in the comments seems to realize she's just an emotional mom and not an idiot.
There are some townhomes in Chicago with bathroom on ground floor (3 stories). Sell for 500+. It's plumbed so you can add a bath. Many homes are built this way. I've seen homes where literally every room is on a different level. I have two criteria: A fireplace and separate dining room, not area, as I dislike open floorplans
they want sell and give up that house. But nobody buys it! Remember you want to leave it! Interest people have their own ideas and dreams. They only can have them in an empty space. By my own i had a lot of work to clean my house and garden, for a welcome. but that made a good price.
How did their original real estate agent not advise them to remove all their personal items? Or maybe freshen up the kitchen cabinets? That’s just weird.
De-clutter and de-personalize if you wanna sell or rent. No one is interested in your family story as everyone has own story. Property should be like canvas with arrangement as the inspiration. Neutral staging is the best staging.

True... but to SELL it needs to be de-cluttered. These people are selling BECAUSE it is too small for THEM. The realtor is correct.. the new buyers will likely be one or two people. Decluttering sells.
The HOUSE is such a problem, weird design, too small really for anyone but a single.
They were "scratching their heads" about why the weren't getting offers? Difficult to believe...the place was a cluttered dump on the inside and outside.
Amy did not take like a duck to water, to Sofie's pronouncements.
Happy endings and adult reasoning -- always a nice thing!!
True, but then make the large basement master bedroom look awesome, not a nasty mattress on the floor. lol
I agree, they should have made a double bedroom in the basement and then there would have been three bedrooms. Doesn’t make any sense.
Those kids have all that stuff, and no space to play. Decluttering (reducing) all the things the kids have would be a big help to the kids. More open floor space in their rooms.
This place looks like a mobile home in a US trailer park.
Lol 😅
📢 exactly
When we visited some old friends years ago, they put us on the floor sleeping on an old thin mattress. Not the way to treat a guest, much less to make it your master bedroom! Some people are just blind to what is truly bad taste.
On the other hand, they saved you money by hosting you.
I agree 100%.
Agree!!! It's not about "you, your Kids, your family" she's clueless
The transformation is unbelievable!
What did they do with their children in the house revamp? I assumed they would make the basement into the children's room, with a division in it for their son. But, they completely disappeared from the house plan!
They already had their next house so I guess they all just moved in for real instead of leaving in the house they were selling
There’s something wrong with that woman, lights on no one home kinda thing
@@eniko7698 🙄This is a Canadian program. These people are Canadians.
@@katiebellejohnson2688 Canada is north America yes. Vastly different mentality compared to Europe.
This is an old repeat. The exterior of the house looks like a dump.
YES IT DOES. so it's all about the mother and what she thinks and wants. Id have no patience with her ! I don't like these houses at all .
@@ericnorthman9410 It's all about affordability. In a tight financial market ( like now) a little elbow grease goes a long way.. I bet all those small fixer upers are now Fixed Up and PRICY.
yes it does ☹ what a mess
The basement looks nicer than upstairs. Definitely too much clutter. Outside needs to be staged too. It looks much newer, cleaner
And brighter. 👍
Only bathroom is in basement and the only dining area is a breakfast bar with 2 backless stools? YIKES.
Wonderful improvement. The before was sad and dreary and tired. The re-do is light and happy and hopeful.
The wife is definitey sabotaging the house
This couple would be rock stars if this video was covering frugal living. Love them to bits. But their face sure did light up when they found out the other property sold in a week and they knew exactly what they had to do.
They would of never sold that house without you! I'm questioning alot with this couple and not to mention they have kids so this problem is multigenerational!
What? That they didn't have the knowledge to renovate and sell houses? 😂
Not everyone has the vision to decorate. This is so not an issue for their kids
They might just be happy and settled like an elderly couple.
It was filmed in Toronto, back in 2009.
I think the entry space was the bathroom and they took it out. The space doesn't make sense.
I really dislike the we-are-better-than anybody-else US attitude.
Architecture in the US - allow me to shudder.
This is and old prewar home. You have the internet, look up current homes in Canada and you will see larger modern homes.
@@jrochest4642Can you imagine what it would sell for today?
I liked the blue paint and the round table. The house though is so impractical and feels cramped even without the clutter around. The only nice room is the new master bedroom.
The curb appeal is non existant, clutter at the front, a mess. The wife is clueless.
What a pigsty. People live like that?
I don't understand people being reluctant to pack their stuff up. You're moving out anyway! All your stuff is getting in the way of buyers ability to imagine themselves in the house. This should have been obvious to anyone. I like the changes they made, but TBH it may have sold just as well without most of the new work because packing up their personal stuff and reducing most of the furniture was probably all that was needed. I sold my house in one day by moving my personal stuff out (a huge chore, but it has to be done anyway) and staging it the way I'd want to see it if I was buying.
As a buyer, I would have been deterred by the big drainage pipe in the front yard. It seemed very out of place.
A coat of fresh paint makes an enormous difference. I think white paint is generally best, however.
Is it just me but does the host look like Kirsty from Location Location Location? Why are people not packing up their house if they have already bought one?
This is a really old episode as you can see by the tv. If I go back in memory I want to say I believe they are both sisters.
They are sisters.
Yes I’ve noticed and I wonder if she is a sister or a daughter of Kirstie Allsopp.
Right?!
Thanks for the explanation. I thought---wow what a makeover she's had!!
First thing I would do is take out half the furniture.
Why is this lady holding on to her home? And she has to de-clutter to move anyway, she doesn’t really want to let it go.
Great video! About the seller doing a home inspection to save potential buyers “the trouble” - no buyer should use the seller’s inspections reports! The buyer should always hire their own, to ensure the inspections are thorough and independent.
It's hard to let go if you think of it as your current home that you will live in. It's not. Move your stuff out & let experts do their thing.
I clicked on this thinking it was Kirstie Allsopp in the US. Family traits are undeniable
Only bathroom in the basement would put off a lot of people.
I love watching your show, thanks!
You can start by taking off your boots Sofie!
Annalena Baerbock has found a new job ! I am so glad!
My farm was a 2 story built in 1989, 4 out buildings & 40 acres for $190,00. This price for a small place and no land is outrageous! 🙃
Depends on state/city, location within each, what persons need/want !! 😮😅
Youre 100% right about ridiculous price for no land.. and that ridiculous living room🙄
The difference was in the first line there 1989, prices have changed.
Most of them are, apparently 😂
My husband and I are more like you because he is a contractor. The house we bought a few years ago is a fixer and needs so much work done but we were able to see all pass that despite the people still living there and having their crap everywhere.
I can't believe the price, and seventeen years ago!!
It is likely a desirable location. It's ALWAYS about the Location.
Love the couple bc the best rooms are for the kids
Nice, good job, decluttering really made a difference
Host: Who do you imagine buying this house?
Wife: Us? No... ( laughs )
😂😂😂
Yeah, right! Very funny! 😂😂😂
Zoo of a family home 😮
Omg 319.000 for that piece of junk!
That house had so little curb appeal.
Is that woman really that niave!!
I think it's more that she has all these memories from raising her family there, and she's kinda sad to move on. Weird to me that nobody in the comments seems to realize she's just an emotional mom and not an idiot.
@@BackyardRebelSometimes we allow our emotions to get in the way of good decision making... and unfortunately pay a price for that.
How was that house built with no upstairs bathroom?
There are some townhomes in Chicago with bathroom on ground floor (3 stories). Sell for 500+. It's plumbed so you can add a bath. Many homes are built this way. I've seen homes where literally every room is on a different level. I have two criteria: A fireplace and separate dining room, not area, as I dislike open floorplans
Great neighborhood? Open floorplan? HUGE backyard? None of that applies to this house.
they want sell and give up that house.
But nobody buys it! Remember you want to leave it!
Interest people have their own ideas and dreams. They only can have them in an empty space.
By my own i had a lot of work to clean my house and garden, for a welcome. but that made a good price.
looks like the inside of the trailer
How did their original real estate agent not advise them to remove all their personal items? Or maybe freshen up the kitchen cabinets? That’s just weird.
He did, but it was her Uncle and she just ignored him and he didn't want to hurt her feelings. Mixing family with business is a recipe for disaster.
Super sweet couple!
De-clutter and de-personalize if you wanna sell or rent. No one is interested in your family story as everyone has own story. Property should be like canvas with arrangement as the inspiration. Neutral staging is the best staging.
What about curb appeal?
I think the show was just too short to address that elephant in the room. If you can't get a buyer out of the car... they can't appreciate the inside.
it's a Dump
