It's not fake, that was actually the point of the video. If you exceed 64 cuts, it rolls back over to 1 cut. Say if I got 66 cuts, it would register as only 2 cuts. They didn't account on anybody being able to attain such a high score.
The gossip stone does indeed say that Peater's record is rumoured to be 43. However the game does not acknowledge beating 43 slices at all, Peater doesn't react any differently and you do NOT receive a heart piece here.
The reason this happens is because the number that stores the cuts is a 6-bit integer. Because 64 is the max for 6-bit integers, the counter just displays the overflow of 1 when you hit 65.
@@croplaya The game is tracking the record using a 6-bit integer. So, lets draw six zeros in a row: 000000 Each number can only be either 0 or 1. So, lets make the last number a 1: 000001 That is the actual value for 1. But what if we wanted the value for 2? Well, each number has a different value that it represents. Here is how the six zeros are handled: 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1 So, we can get the value of 2 by making the last number zero and the fifth number a one: 000010 = 2 Now, what if all the numbers were full of ones? Here is it: 111111 32 + 16 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 63 Now the number that is used during the minigame is not the same as the number used to track the record. This causes a problem for numbers above 64 as there is no more space. So what happens is that the number overflows and is treated as zero.
Ah, it's not a mod. See, what happens is that when slashing in such rapid succession, you're creating multiple slices of Bamboo, each new slice also falls fairly slowly as they somewhat balance and stack in that short time, since the stalk is so tall. As a result a single slash may actually cut through 2 or 3 separate bamboo slices. If you check the video response below, gamesforangelo has used the same technique and scored 52 cuts. The difference is you can see me perform this technique here.
this just popped into my recommended, cool stuff. I watch a lot of casual streams of this game, and I like to give tips to them. Now I know the best strat, thanks!

yes, count is 6bit encoded internally according to zelda wikia web site.. so overflow after 64 count and then return to 1.. :/
@CraigEmberson The sensor bar is sort-of used in the game to maintain calibration, actually. If the wii remote doesn't know where the sensor bar is, you might find your sword swinging a bit odd or the B-item selection dial not co-operating.
Thank you! Goddess, I was going crazy with this mini-game. I got 37 twice, but was normally somewhere between 25-33 for the several dozen attempts I made. The Gossip Stone hinted that Peater had a record of 43 and I was determined to see what happened if you broke it. Nothing, apparently, but after three or four tries I got 53 cuts. Many thanks for your assistance!
The game doesnt register half of my swings for some reason. I managed to get 32 when I had the shorter, basic sword, but I have no idea how I did that.
@tIs4gatorbait I was sat down, the nunchuk was rested on my lap so it wouldn't move around to cause a spin attack, and my method was using downward slashes. The fact the game makes you read a lot of text is for a reason, if it didn't the players would over-exert themselves by playing the game too hard, too long without breaks.
You got an evil crystal, and you get them for making 20 to 27 cuts. Make 28 cuts and you'll start getting the best treasures, blue feather, gold skull and goddess plume.
@misterneckbreaker88 Sword progression is the same as in hero mode, except that you start with a powered up skyward strike, which at the end will charge instantly.
@tIs4gatorbait I figured it out.... Hold the Wii Remote with your fingers either side of the tip of the remote, facing the screen (It doesn't respond with the sensor bar like most people think) but it helps you get a focus on the bamboo like a gun barrel lol Then you make sure you're shaking the remote up and down and not side to side at all and you'll be splitting it into several pieces at once.
See how I'm holding the Wii Remote between both hands, pointer fingers extended? This helps me slice up and down as straight as possible. Holding the Wii Remote very near the screen also seemed to help for some reason but I have no clue if it really matters.
@Zeldarulah Ah, so what you're saying is basically that all the hits after the first are counted in 6 bits while the first cut is counted separately as the ready to count condition. Makes sense, I forget that you couldn't even get 0. I realized when I have been bested good sir, and I stand corrected.
Don't worry too much about surpassing 43 cuts anyway, there's nothing to be earned for doing it. The best score my game has recognised is 59, even though I actually managed 77 cuts one time, which only registered as 13 cuts.
@Zeldarulah almost correct sir since binary numbers range from 0 to 2^n-1 in this case since its 6 bits the highest possible number for an unsigned int variable can have is 63 that what (111 111) is after that it will go to 64 count up one more and overflow to 000 000 and for the 65th hit it will count up to 000 001
I just ragequitted this fucking mini-game. So unprecise. This technology is far from being accurate, and no matter how I try it, vertically like you or shaking the wiimote sideways like a dumbass, I can't get the 43. This MotionPlus thing is so fucked. The rest of the game is awesome but this bamboo thing just drives me crazy
It's annoying that they tease 43 as a goal by whispering to that Sheikah Stone, but not only is it quite difficult to achieve, but doing so isn't recognised either. This looks like somewhere you would earn an important upgrade or a piece of heart, but nope, just materials.
RupeeClock I love that people rant that nintendo games are to easy these days but every little thing that is hard is complained about and said should have a bigger reward.
@CraigEmberson Yup, exactly like I did it in the video. I shot the video like that as a sort of instructional thing, you can even see it clearly whilst I charge the skyward strike.
Yeah, but that one is in Skyloft, I meant outside of it as in 'the sky map' (like Hyrule Field map in TP or OoT :D). The Pumpkin bar also earns you one or two Heart Pieces, I think (breaking the chandelier and paying off for it by doing odd jobs XD).
@LucasCapris If you need money, the sky diving mini-game is the most lucrative. It takes practice but soon enough you'll be earning 480 rupees from a single game often.
@RupeeClock The sensor bar does nothing in this game... The pointer is all Motion Plus controlled - You can even unplug the sensor bar after the start-up calibration.
@tIs4gatorbait It really isn't easy to do, but I did do it a couple of times. For some, for some reason the trick seemed to be holding my wii remote closer to the screen, because of the sensor bar.
Master Link. According to my records, there is a 101% chance Peater got jealous of your swag and skill. Alternatively, I sense that it is also why he doesn't realize there's been a side quest to flirt and get with his daughter. I recommend you do not say a word about this to Lady Zelda. Would you like me to add this to the dowsing list? I shall now call the robot with psychic abilities. You should go to the Isle of songs to find the next entry to the silent realm. Your play time for this session is of 06 minutes. Your total play time is of 43 hours and 21 minutes. Terminated. By the way, Master, you Wii remote's batteries are almost empty.
@GigamanEXE Mm, not true. It would go up to 63 if it includes 0, which it does, and I found that strange myself. I assume that for whatever reason they use a separate variable for when a single slice has never been done, which makes sense, because the timer does not begin until after the first slice. Or perhaps you have a better explanation as to why it ends at 64?
@GigamanEXE Oh, and, it just occured to me that I am definitely correct: The uploader had 65 slices, but it said only one, if it had looped back to 0 (in other words, if this number ranged from values 0-64) it would have looped back to 0 for the 65th hit, not 1. So 0 is simply displayed there as a constant, and then replaced with a 6 bit variable after the first slice, most likely because that's what causes the event to really start. Computer science noob :P
@Zeldarulah Exactly what I just thought... I mean the Wii has 88 MB RAM and then they were so cheap and used a 6 bit variable for that, wow. Even the rupee count in the original LoZ for the NES was at least 8 bit...
How on Earth did you do that? I tried that same strategy and got 42 cuts! I really want to beat Peater's 43! That game is so addicting. Do you have to go perfectly up and down or something?
I was just thinking the same! I kept playing his game and was wondering how he got so many evil crystals. Goddess Hylia must have chosen him to be the hero by accident. Then she realized her mistake and that's why she made those time gates 😂. I love this game so much! I got the original with the golden wii-mote when it first came out and loved it (still do). I got the HD version on this past 16th on its release day with the skyward sword HD joycons and I get to re-play this game yet again and it's even more beautiful! And I still love it but even more now!
@mastersword12345 You can get Goddess Plumes,Gold Skulls and Blue feathers pretty easily this way, they're useful for upgrading your items. If it's rupees you need, play the sky diving game instead.
how far into the game were you when you did this? i've attempted a few times to copy this technique and my sword does not cut even close to that quickly
@So just stop slicing once you get past 28 slices, that part's not hard with this technique. I've only triggered this glitch twice, the first time was 77 slices which I didn't get to record.
This is how a true 5-star chef slices vegetables
It's not fake, that was actually the point of the video.
If you exceed 64 cuts, it rolls back over to 1 cut.
Say if I got 66 cuts, it would register as only 2 cuts.

The gossip stone does indeed say that Peater's record is rumoured to be 43. However the game does not acknowledge beating 43 slices at all, Peater doesn't react any differently and you do NOT receive a heart piece here.
Omg what a rip off 😢 not even a reaction.
Ok thank you. If there's no heart piece here, I might not bother then unless I'm really needing a treasure
This is what o needed to know! Lol thanks
The reason this happens is because the number that stores the cuts is a 6-bit integer. Because 64 is the max for 6-bit integers, the counter just displays the overflow of 1 when you hit 65.
what does that mean? 64 is the max for 6 -bit integers and the number that stores the cuts? Sorry I dont get it

10 years later and I still think of this video randomly every few months or so.
Fucking legendary.
65 cuts? damn impressive! *sees it as 1 cut* relax peater's just jealous.
Here's another glitch.... I have 11 rupees... it's 10 to play. Apparently I don't have enough rupees to play. O.o
Hah, poor peasant
I needed this trick thank you 10 years later
I see. The count rolls over once you hit 64. 65 is 1 cut, 66 is 2, and so on.
yeah, like the 255 coin max in super mario 64.
Yeah, 6-bit integer overflow :\
Yes, you can tell by the Master Sword's sheath in the video.
The Skyward Strike also charges instantly because this was hero mode.
Link cut so fast Peter only saw one attack.
MASTER. I DETECT A 70% CHANCE THAT THE BAMBOO WAS ULTIMATELY DESTROYED BY YOUR BLADE.
Haha, as a programmer, this is hilarious! I'd have thought the devs would've seen this one coming 😂😂

Chopping bamboo like that is apparently a traditional Japanese sword exercise.

With those numbers I calculate that the maximum recognizable score before number wrapping is 64, which also happens to be a nice binary value.
The game doesnt register half of my swings for some reason. I managed to get 32 when I had the shorter, basic sword, but I have no idea how I did that.

He saw how well you did and change the score because he didn't want to be beaten.
this isn't really a glitch, it's just so big brain it's a little exploitive
edit: oh wait I just realized it screwed over his count
You got an evil crystal, and you get them for making 20 to 27 cuts.
Make 28 cuts and you'll start getting the best treasures, blue feather, gold skull and goddess plume.
@MrSuperbadr Nope. 2^6 = 64. 2^8 = 256. The original Zelda dedicated 8 bits to Rupees, that's why it only went up to 255 (1 bit dedicated to 0)
@benboy803 Nothing, Peater just says the exact same thing about that being a hum-dingerlinger of a score as though you beat 28 cuts.
Amazing! Well done. That is way more than I thought was possible.
@misterneckbreaker88 Sword progression is the same as in hero mode, except that you start with a powered up skyward strike, which at the end will charge instantly.

It does this cause the score only has a 6 bit memory.
@SuperFFXfan Yes, which is why the Skyward Strike charges instantly on the true master sword.
There is no piece of heart to this.
I think it's because it registers 63-64 as max (binary calculation: 1111111).
See how I'm holding the Wii Remote between both hands, pointer fingers extended?
This helps me slice up and down as straight as possible.
Holding the Wii Remote very near the screen also seemed to help for some reason but I have no clue if it really matters.
Have you test this on Switch (Skyward Sword HD) ?
Link: (cuts a bamboo 65 times)
Peater: "That still only counts as one!"
The only heart piece you get in a game played in the sky is at Fun Fun Island by passing through all the rings and landing on the 50 rupees mark.
@Zeldarulah he was holding the wiimote with both hands so he could cut perfectly straight
@Jonniz2000 "but if you manage to hit 65 cuts, it rolls back over to just 1 cut."
The description explains why.
@Zeldarulah

@RevolutionaryOven Wrong, play hero mode.
You get the instant charge when you obtain the true master sword on hero mode.
@GigamanEXE Haha. Glad to hear it :) Was fun to analyze it a bit more as a prospective game programmer.
@Fabrazz It may have been about 20 swings of the sword, but one swing can cut more than one section of bamboo at once.
Okay, this was very cool. Can't wait to try to do the same.
@Dannyboyyay Are you using a different sword? Normal sword < Guardian Longsword < Master Sword, don't forget.
True, but this is easier then going on wild goose chases unless you have the moonlight merchant.
At the beginning I was like 'I NEED TO DO THAT, IMAGINE THE REWARD !!!!' but then I saw the price :/
