Ron Capps, the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Series nitro Funny Car champion, checked a box off his career resume by winning the March Meet for the first time.
Capps drove the “Good News” 1948 Fiat Topolino AA Fuel Altered owned by Hertzig Motorsports and tuned by Bryan Hall to the title.
Capps beat Robert Winefsky in the finals. Capps clocked a 6.00-second run at 158.93 mph to get past Winefsky’s 6.00-second run at 120.91 mph.

AA/FA Altereds are AWESOME. Ron, you are truly awe inspiring and a class guy. You are a true credit to the sport.
It is what it is , today's T/F & F/C are exciting.....But AA/FUEL ALTERED is where it's at ! They're fast , loud , and nostalgic . All the nostalgic meets are far better than an NHRA national . Even the 1/8 mile events like Funny Car Chaos is better . I'm 58 years old , watched the cars...and rules change and basically ruined themselves . And the Gassers are back ! It is what it is .
Like hitting the lottery twice! Once for driving that car, and again for winning the race! LOL!

Old school? Modern altereds have nothing in common with the old altereds other than being called the poor man's dragster.

I always heard it was the short wheebase that made them too dangerous for nhra.
No better driver than Capps to get the job done. Miss the "Winged Express" AAFA.
I was lucky to see the Alaskan grizzly run approx 5.75, 275 here at Alaska raceway park, against Ricky Ruiz in the Nevada Rattler, and also against Ron Fassel in the Pepsi altered! And actually seen “ the mob” fiat up on its left side on two wheels against the Texas ranger in the late 90’s at Pomona! Chew on that all!!!🤪😂👍😳

Yeah real simple. I have never thought of racing of any kind being simple. My goodness........ it literally takes 3 people to start it and 3 people to back it up 50 feet.
The engine combination is simple... I run blown fuel and it's very simple compared to the stuff they run now.
Now THESE are what REAL drag machines look and act like... My favorite class.
I think back up girls are much better at this!

Never (in modern day) have we seen a bigger grin on Ron Capp's face than this. We loved the respect Ron speaks (and we know he feels it) for all the fuel altered drivers and crew. A class gentleman indeed.

Drag racing pre-“RONA” they canceled the wchra Cali shootout 😭 I was all dressed up with no place to go. Bakersfield has an awesome track with mineshaft air.

An absolutely brilliant video. Thank you so much. Why is AA/FA not an event in the NHRA? I'm sure it was when I was quite young. These cars have such beauty, such character and they are not all copies of each other with a different paint job. My gosh, they're so beautiful. At 64, and living in Toronto, Canada, I'm sure I'll never get to see these in the flesh. It's only through videos like this that people like I can experience them. Once again, thank you for bringing AA/FA to us.

Just watched the Fuel Altered Nationals at Eddyville Race Way Park in Iowa and the fastest car ran 208 mph in the 1/8th.

I used to like it when the NHRA has the Budweiser warm up there before the first race in Pamona . Tom Capps needs to bring that thing up here to Spokane Raceway Park at the nostalgia world finals

Love the Fiat. 65 years old, 60 of it I've been watching drag racing. Always been a favorite, even though it's just a glass shell. We had a garage down the street that had a 40 Willys coup named Bad News.
The "Fiat" is the best looking car in the field!

I grew up in Monrovia, CA, up in the foothills. The old Irwindale raceway was close and we could hear the cars up in the canyon on the weekend. We lived to go to that track. My buddies and I all loved the fuel altereds. Wild Willy Borsch, Pure Hell, Pure Heaven, etc were our heroes. So cool to see Ron Capps driving one. Dead on when he says they are sexy!
Seen a lot of guys wreck in double A hats of to Ron caps never saw this video ther a handful that’s for sure this man is very talented he probably got more time on a quarter mile than most have driving back and forth to work each year

I've always loved Ron's real passion for motorsports in general. This guy truly sees the excitement anyone feels whether in a 5 second car or a 15 second car. He also has mad respect for other forms of motorsport.

I agree. They have such character, and they all don't look the same (with the exception of paint jobs). There are actual differences in body design. So lovely to look at. Yet they have the power, sound and fury of Top Fuel and Fuel Funny Car. Just fantastic!!

Ron has been a steady fixture at March meet and Hotrod reunion also.... I'm hoping Burkholder Brothers get their new altered going! As Ron says, here's to a 16 car field.... Famosa is always fun and good for family....

Didn't know Ron Capps ran AA/Fuel Altereds too; very cool. I remember AA/FA's were the wild hairy beasts of drag racing, before AA/Funny Cars sort of stole the limelight over the years. Nice job Ron and crew; a pleasure to watch you race.

I have watched this video numerous times and it never gets old. I live in Texas and when I was growing up these Hot Rods were my favorite. I need to attend a March Meet.
